Fun fact: Godhand's real name is actually Ken Mishima. He had some of Kazuya, Heihachi, and Paul's moves from Tekken. The game was published by Namco in the arcades and developed by Dreamfactory, who apparently were made up of ex-Namco staff. So you can call Godhand a lost Mishima.

I would really like to see a remaster for this game on current gen consoles, although I know this game took a lot of inspiration from Tekken but that's because the team who worked on Ehrgeiz had Seichi Ishii as it's designer who worked on Tekken 1, Tekken 2 and Virtua Fighter. Ken "God Hand" Mishima = Jin Kazama/Kazuya Mishima, he actually has Mishima gloves and moves Han Daehan = Hwoarang with a leg that shoots rockets Yoyo Yoko = Xiaoyu with a yoyo Clair Andrews = Fights like Law Dasher Inoba = Has a few King moves Lee Shuwen = Lei Wulong Sasuke = Yoshimitsu Doza Naseem = Kinda like Bruce Irvin Wolf Girl Jo = Relies a lot on her kicks like Eddy

I swear this comment will be lost to the sands of time, but it must be heard. I can only pray that one of you d00ds reads this and heeds my warning (or takes full advantage of this should you ever play Ehrgeiz with friends). One of the most outrageously overpowered sleeper characters in a fighting game lies unnoticed in the depths of Ehrgeiz. His name is Masuda, and he is a literal one-button monster. I am not exaggerating, somehow in a 3D fighting game you only need one button to win with him. "BS" you say, "Cloud is sooooo OP in this game," and you're not wrong, Cloud is very good, BUT Masuda single-handedly deletes every Final Fantasy character ever role played without ever touching the D-pad. If a friend invites you over to play, break their controller in half, maintain eye contact, and tell them very plainly "I won't be needing this part." It was fortunate Squaresoft never included him in any other title, else every character would be rocking an arm cast after having their helpless limbs broken by this Masuda menace. Seriously, if any of you has this game please unlock him just to try him out, it's hilarious. Just hold Masuda's "special" (usually circle I think? It's been a while) and that's... it. Once you release the potential of this grappling god you become an UNSTOPPABLE wrecking machine that has only one mission-to kill. And it's not like his attack is unusual for this game, other characters have homing attacks, right? Except Masuda's hurts, a lot. Not to mention AFTER he's done exhibiting every joint lock, arm bar, and leg lock known to man (the only reason he stops is probably because he's bored at this point) he's right there, on top of you, ready to charge that special again without giving you any breathing room. Guess what? HE CAN GET BACK ON YOU EVEN IF YOUR CHARACTER IS LYING DOWN. It's like a horror movie, you physically cannot escape. You jump away? He's STILL charging you. Try to attack him? Can't, it's absolutely ludicrous to try. This Texas chainsaw massacre of a man who doesn't need no chainsaw is hilariously difficult to get away from. Keep in mind, throughout the entire charge you literally haven't touched the D-pad. Oh and the best part? If you run out of special bar, Masuda gets a shoulder tackle that is also insane. I swear it has 1200 i-frames and stings like a barrel of murder hornets. "But d00d, Cloud just gets his sword ou-" No. Cloud will not get his sword out in time. Just tap the bloody special and tackle him immediately. I tried it back in the day. Game over every time. There is no other character in this game, there is only Masuda. You can't run. You can't hide. He's coming.

I played the SHIT out of this game as a kid. I loved the mechanics and powerful attack options. I loved that you could cheese most bosses by simply spamming Cloud's low-kick. I loved that Tifa was the exception to this. Django (aka "not Red XIII") was cool as hell. And Quest mode? Amazing! Randomly generated dungeons, hunger management, and a level-up system that increased stats based on your character's nutrition intake? God, I played that shit for so many hours. Ehrgeiz is amazing. God bless the ring.

I was lucky enough to be able to purchase the strategy guide for this title at launch. It's not an intuitive fighting game, but the most rewarding if you take the time to learn it. Max is really struggling with how different it is. I think if he played it more, he'd be shocked at how intricate it was.

Man, Ehrgeiz was one of my favorite games growing up. I got so lucky that the only demo disc from Playstation I had featured a demo from this game. It took me a while for me to buy the full version, but man, after I did, I played this quite a bit. I still replay it from time to time. I don't think it's a good fighting game, especially for today's standards, but I do think it's way, WAAAAAY underrated. This game was great!
