In this video we will talk about the different base wads that you may encounter in the Federal Hulls. This is in no way extensive nor does it cover every possibility. This is just my observations and should not be taken as fact. You should always consult a good quality and trusted manual prior to loading.

I mounted my presses with a cookie sheet under them so if I spill anything it collects on the sheet and not the floor. Thanks for the videos.

nice job your about the only one on youtube that talks about shotgun my dad was into shotguns but he gave it all up when his dad died its been all most 40 years and I just blow the dust and clean the shotguns back up they work good now. but your about the only one i have found that talks about reloading shells cuuz of the 16ga side by side needs custome shell loads for it keep up the good work and I hope to learn a lot from you

Thank you for the kind words. I think I like reloading shotgun shells sometimes more than hunting…..well almost. Trying new things and seeing what works best has always been fun.

I have some Federal Premium HV Tactical 9-00 Buck 2 3/4" hulls, brass plated steel head. They were free so I will use them. Spoke to Federal and the tech advised me they are in the process of changing from a "plastic formed" base wad to a "inserted plastic" base wad.

One simple way of looking at it is all hulls even within the same brand name are different You have to find the ones that you have the best luck with The ones You like the best and just stick with those. That way it keeps reloading simple and more enjoyable

*SINCE THE STANDARDS for base wad height and shell length are subject to constant change you might do well to discover ROLL CRIMPING and hull trimming.* .

So the federal with the white base wad makes great 2 3/4" steel loads, GM data works great in them, running 1 1/8 oz steel, 32 grn Alliant steel and a w209 in them, lists that at 1425 fps, they pattern well

Federal now has the new "High Overall" (HOA) shotshell line out that features a new hull with a one piece basewad and tapered hull design. Seems almost identical to Remington STS hulls except for color. Just more confusion in the world of shotshells.

it is just a burgundy STS, use the same load data as your STS, they load very well. Vista outdoors acquired remington ammunition and not long after the HOA line came out.

I called federal 10-16-22 they informed me that they do not have load data for the haul your talking about I have contacted precision reloading there going to test some loads I put together for 12ga

I have a box of once fired federal 16ga with the fiber base wads. Still haven’t found a good way to put steel reloads in them. But someday they will publish some reload data for them. So they will just sit there until that happens. Until then, Cheddite will get the nod. Do love the purple Federals though.

I think those purple hulls are one of the things that draw us in. There just isn’t anything like shooting a nicely balanced 16 gauge. Thanks for the encouragement.

I've seen 12 ga Federal paperbase wad data from Precision Reloding. Maybe the have data in 16 ga.

I'm a little late to the show but I had a question about powder migration in straight walled hulls especially Federal Topgun, Gameload, etc.. I have never been able to find a straight wall wad that fit tight in them. I only use these hulls because I have a lot of them that were free to me. I'll use a load and wad recommended by Lyman but always have to put some sort of over-powder wad of paper or cardboard over the powder first(pain in the butt) otherwise I get powder floating all around the shot column. Have you ever had this problem or have any solutions? Excellent videos. Why did you stop making them?

I have had powder migration problems. Usually it is from using a tapered style wad in a straight wall hull. The overpowder cards they have a ballistic products or precision reloading do work. You might try a different wad/load combo and see if that helps.

Push your wad base against a pool ball. Expands it about .01. Usually fixes it. Otherwise ballistic products should sell federal wads. If not any noblesport is a straightwalled hull.

Hi bud u are using the wrong machine for ur crimps try one of the gaep machines no comparison i reload ectensevely for 20 guage and 16

I have heard great things about the GAEP machines. Right now they are just a little out of my price range. Who knows maybe one day I will get to experience them. Thanks for watching.
