Federer, Djokovic & Nadal: Tennis' G.O.A.T Debate
Who is the greatest of all time? It’s a question that gets posed in every sport and tennis is no exception. The world's best have been competing on an equal footing in the Open Era for half a century, so the list of candidates for the G.O.A.T, or Greatest of All Time, is long - and has got longer in the last 20 years.
At the time of production, Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic have, between them, won 57 of the last 69 Grand Slams, dating back to 2003.
But are they the best ever? And does it really matter?

Sampras is the greatest grass court player of all time. His Wimbledon record is 90% and Finals record was 7-0. This is unmatched by any player. Sampras' competition consisted of far more grass court elite players - Ivanisevic, Edberg, Becker and Krajicek, to name a few. Then there were other grass-court effective stars such as Henman and Rafter; two guys who would have posed significant problems against Federer in their primes. Federer's run in 2001 was stifled by Henman, as an example. Federer also never beat Rafter. I acknowledge that he was very young for those matches, but it is nonetheless an indicator that he would have experienced some problems. Put plainly, in Federer's era, his competition were not grass-court oriented players. None of his competitors could enforce an attacking game style that was most effective on the surface. And, yet, Federer still lost on grass to the likes of Murray, Djokovic and Nadal. I don't think those guys are beating Sampras in his prime. In fact, in his prime, Sampras only lost once at Wimbledon and that was to Krajicek, again, a serve-and-volleyer who fit the surface. Meanwhile, Federer lost a number of times from 2008 - 2014. One of his losses was to Sergiy Stakhovsky who openly admitted that he did not play serve-and-volley tennis but nonetheless gave it a go against Federer and won. I can only imagine what experienced serve-and-volley players would accomplish against Federer if he went up against a multitude of them year-after-year.

But the thing is Novak make them look not intelligent enough, Fed makes the game simple and easy which is very hard, Nadal makes the game super hard for the opponents, main qualities respectively (even though each one of the big 3 can do most of the stuff the other 2 can): intelligence|elegance|force, and lets add the math component, of course, I have respect for all 3 players, IQ>F>Elegance, therefore..

if you are looking at 3 players, connors, borg and mcenroe ruled tennis for quite some time. you can not compare players from other eras. only in the same era. people do not evolve in this short time span. we are talking about a century or so. that is a drop in the bucket, compared to evolution. the main differences in various eras IN ALL SPORTS has to do with everything EXCEPT THE ATHLETE. rules change, equipment changes, technology changes, etc. there was a tennis player talking about his personal trainer, his chiropractor, his nutritionist, etc. people of today dont realize how much advantage an athlete has today, over an athlete of yesteryear. laver and rosewall ruled tennis for a long time, as well. and then they keep comparing number of grand slams. but they seldom mention that slams in the past were amateur events. and the french open and the australian open had no big presence. many of the best players didnt even play them. back when rosewall and laver were competing, the biggest deal by far was the end of year championships. that meant a lot more than one of the slams. so the emphasis was different. of all the sports that i know about, the equipment changes in tennis is probably the most significant. if you are not old enough to have actually played with a wood racket, then you have absolutely no business in making comparisons of older players. i am old enough to have played with a wooden tennis racket. they are so inferior to today's rackets, it is absolutely laughable. in any era, the best players rise to the top. because they are the best at the skills needed. the skills needed to day are different than those needed 60 years ago. so it is likely that the best 3 players of yesteryear would not be as good as the players today with the skills that are needed today. it is equally likely that the 3 best players of today would not be as good as those in yesteryear, if they were born in yesteryear. you change any rule in a sport, it is bound to make a difference on who the best players are. with today's rules, mcenroe would not be great. it is difficult to get to the net, in today's game. so you would be taking most of the game away from the best net player of all time. there is nobody even close to mcenroe, when it comes to playing the net. he was a damn magician. i didnt even like him when he was playing, but i am willing to be honest about his ability. any discussion of tennis greats without the mention of pancho gonzales is missing something. he was super dominant at his peak, and was still in major tournaments in his mid 40s. the thing about being older is that one has a lot more experience in everything. and is much better able to see the forest from the trees. starting with pancho, you then had laver and rosewall, then connors, borg and mcenroe, and then i didnt follow as much. but certainly these 6 players were the best ones in that 40-50 year span. they were all different, with different skill sets. i can still recall being on the edge of my seat watching rosewall beat laver in the first 2 wct championships.

The GOAT criteria that means most in my opinion: 1. Number of GS titles 2. Weeks at n1 3. H2H against main rivals Number of "big" titles ( GS, masters, WTF) should also be taken in consideration IMO at number 4. One month from now, Novak will have the winning h2h record and most weeks at n1. If I'm not mistaken, he will also have the most "big" titles of the three. He is also the youngest.

The whole argument about ‘weak’ NextGen players or ‘prime’ Fed vs prime Novak seems to be part of some other kind of discussion. For most players, pundits and tennis followers, the debate is rather about who emerges as having had the best career on court. The weak era arguments are too subjective, they can’t be proven or put properly to the test, and they are not productive because there is no given criteria for a player like Novak or an upcoming player to aspire to or meet the requirements. If Novak is not the greatest because his recent slams are not fought against prime Fed or youthful Rafa, then the debate is over and the door effectively closed for the rest of time, which is neither fair nor productive. The point is that the ‘best-career-on-court’ debate (which hitherto recent events was used by Fedal fans) is a debate based around one’s whole 15+ or 20+ year career. If Novak ends up physically better off than Rafa in the next 2 or 3 years, then that is not all down to luck. If Novak cashes in on some slams in his thirties when apparently the other players are not up to scratch (not my opinion), then his perseverance, determination and attention to health and fitness has paid off better in the long-run. In summary, if people want to have this highly subjective debate over age differences and so on, then fine, but this is a different discussion or debate. If it took Federer 7 years of appearances to finally reach the semis at the French, then it shows that he was a bit of a slow starter. Fed has also been good in his thirties, but Novak does seem the better player in this late stage of career - he has clearly been fitter, more flexible and more ferocious than Fed between 31-34. Even if Federer was better in his early to mid-20s (which is debatable), well, that is not really the discussion most people are having or care about. Holding all 4 slams at the same time (2016) is an incredibly rare feat in either men’s or women’s. If Novak is the only one to do it (in recent times), then that is an achievement “unlocked” that neither Fed or Rafa did. They’ve all had their dips in form and injuries and surgery etc. They all had their chances to achieve great things. But if Novak ends up obliterating the stats of the others (e.g. top ten wins, No.1 weeks, slams etc., spread of victories on different surfaces), then he will be the best (at best for the time being).

I hope he can keep winning more slam finals without ever losing one! 10 lost finals is more than enough!…Especially at the US Open! He shouldn’t have lost as much as he did! That US 2012 against Murray and 2013 one against Nadal will forever haunt me! The one to Wawrinka in 2016 is also quite painful...He now shares this “unfortunate statistics” with Lendl, who also lost 5 finals out of 8 he played! That is squandered for someone, who is considered hard court goat! Imagine Nadal losing more RG finals than winning! I hope until the rest of his career Djokovic will add at least 2 more to at very least make it even (not even asking for more! Just 50/50 success ratio will be fine!), but first he has to figure outa how to stay in the tournament without getting disqualified...

His overall record on hard court GS is 12/17, that's 70% success rate, we're WAY past the '50/50' success rate here, it's also higher than Federer's success rate at Wimbledon of 67% 8/12, and he's widely and grass goat without controversy. Goat debate is pointless. If Fed didn’t get old in his early 20s he would beat 17 years old Nadal on clay. You could clearly see that when he played against young Nadal he was already losing speed. Also when playing against Djokovic on slams he looks 60 years old. If result is 40-15 he becomes even older. If Nadal and Djokovic would met Fed in his prime he would destroyed them. In his prime from July 2003 to April 2004 Fed could beat Safin and Rodick. Djokovic and Nadal were lucky to be born later and avoid prime Fed

He has won 4 majors without dropping a set, a feat Djokovic has never been able to achieve. 13 FO, a feat Djokovic will never be able to achieve at AO. Djokovic won a career grand slam twice, yet cannot win a gold medal in the Olympics, an event that does not even hold the same prestige as a GS. Djokovic has a higher H2H against Nadal, good for him... Until you realize he played Nadal 7 times in 2011 where Nadal was pleaged by injuries all season while Novak was well and healthy and when Nadal was in peak physical form in the late 2000s, Djokovic barely played him as much - so like I said, you can cherry pick stats all you want, but there is no denying Rafa is the greatest. Not interesting fact. Yes, I am team Djokovic but if you read carefully you will realize that I am speaking objectively. Truth is, Nadal was occasionally wise but much more powerless. What I want to say and you can check it out - majority of these wins are on clay (FO). Translation would be: very often Nadal wasn't good enough to qualify to play against Djokovic (or Federer in that sense) on hard courts or grass while Djokovic and Federer (but especially Djokovic) was able to get to play against Nadal on clay. It is 8:2 for Nadal on FO (Nadal's fortress) and only 2:0 for Djokovic on AO (Djokovic's fortress)...it was not Djokovic's fault that Nadal lost to Murray or other players. On the other hand, Djokovic was very consistent on FO. Yes...ironically, Nadal have more USO than Djokovic; it is partly Djokovic's fault, but it is not anymore only due to reasons related to sport. My point is - it was (and it is) more likely for Djokovic and Federer to appear in late stages of FO and face Nadal than for Nadal to appear in late stages of any other tournament and face other two players. I recently found out - Djokovic has appeared in astounding 13 consecutive FO quarterfinals...if there was not 2009 loss in third round it would be 15+ consecutive quarterfinals. That is wise part of Nadal's game...he realized very early that he is the king of clay (and nobody can deny it) and he often skipped other tournaments or lose (intentionally or not, we will never find out) in early stages. And, of course, win them when he is in the top form.

There is no goat overall since no player is the greatest on ALL surfaces. Even 10 years ago I never believed in the GOAT since it depends on surface who’s better. Federer, Nadal, and Djokovic are truly the g.o.a.t.s. But, I will always have Bjorn Borg as the one who changed tennis -- not only brought it into the modern era but made the sport into the cultural phenomenon it now is. That hair! The clothing style! That mysterious persona! That racket swinging style! Think of it: even though he never won the US Open, he still fought hard ...winning the French, Wimbledon and getting to the U.S. Open final all in the same year (1978 and 1980). Also: Borg brought out girls and women, who, in turn, got more guys to play the game. Until Borg, tennis was always considered a sissy sport. Borg changed that! Boys and men wanted to be like Borg! Even McEnroe said so. Borg was truly one of sports' (not just tennis) ROCK STARS!

I am a Fed fan. But I would say that Djokovic is the best. He has a positive record against Federer, more or less on par with Nadal or better. Djokovic will most probably break Rogers record of weeks at top position (now it is End of January 2021). He still has chances to reach or surpass the 20 GS victories of Rafa and Roger. Nole shouldn’t take it for granted, because Thiem, Zverev and Medvedev and maybe some new man might be in the way for another record. Djokovic pretty much reigned from 2010 to 2020. He has a positive record in Wimbledon against Roger in his favorite tournament Wimbledon. Only Soderling and Djokovic could beat Nadal in Paris. So, for me, Djokovic is the best. The story would be different if three of four majors were played on slow clay and not on fast grass or hard court. Then Nadal would have like thirty plus major titles. We always forget about that detail that the choice of surfaces in most tournaments favors Roger and Novak over Rafael. Last but not least we shouldn’t forget other greats. But do they come close? Connors had a terrific career, but not enough majors. McEnroe couldn’t come back to a real favorite for the majors after his time out in 1986 or so. Lendl never won Wimbledon. Becker never won a clay tournament. Agassi played horrible volleys and had some bad years compared to the big three. Borgs fire went off at the age of 26. Laver, Emerson etc. can’t be compared, because they played at a time when tennis was still a gentlemen’s amateur sport and was played with wooden rackets. The only one who can be compared with the big three is Sampras, who had the best attacking game. But he never took clay court tennis really serious and had just semi final as best result in Paris. That is pretty bad compared to Roger and Novak, who, both would have won many titles in Paris if there had not been Nadal. So, you can pick any of those three. It will be an excellent and correct choice. I think we should not forget that from 2000 on, the game became so much more athletic and physically demanding compared to the eighties and nineties. I think the rackets in the nineties were not that much worse. Wilson Pro Staff, Head Prestige and Yonex etc have been around since them. But the strings were improved in the early zero years, so we see much much more top spin. I dare to say that most top twenty players of the last two decades would have won a major title in the years before 2000. A time machine would be the only way to test my hypothesis.

It's obviously Federer, not only for his performance over the years, but for his personality. I mean, he is literally known as a 'gentleman on and off the court'. That said, I do believe a more appropriate way of viewing it is that Federer, Nadal, and Djokovic are the three pillars of good tennis, together they embody all the principles and skills a good sportsman and tennis player should have. Not to mention that they're all great friends off the court, too.

You can really see the age of the video here. Djokovic was at 17 and the other two at 20. He has since won 7 grand slams (a third of what the other two had at the time) and likely added 2 years as #1. Federer fans in particular have tried to cling onto a "there is no GOAT, they are all so close" for years now but they really aren't close at all anymore.

Federer is still GOAT. He still has enough records in tact for mine and the fact that he won five straight in not one but two grand slams is a feat no human will ever match. Djokovic was always going to overtake Federer, but time ran out for Federer, due to age. Nadal has always had injuries so his time has been limited also. Federer lost 6 years on Djokovic and 5, Nadal - Those two were always going to start winning more matches due to fresher bodies. That doesn't take away from what Federer achieved previously, 20 slams will always be enough for GOAT status because of how he achieved it.

For me, Roger or Nadal or Novak not to be named as G.O.A.T. If a player has each GrandSlam 5+, to be referred as G.O.A.T in my opinion, they all doesn't come close. Currently Novak has the chance to meet the above reason. Also, other than Nadal and Federer, no strong player to defeat Novak unless Novak makes many unforced errors. I started with Pete Sampras but ended with Novak now. Between Pete Sampras and Novak, greatest players means two players only which is Federer and Nadal. Have enjoyed watching three top greatest player tennis for 2 decades. Challenge to everyone: Find the last GrandSlam where these three top players not entered into Semi-final. If you find the answer, then you won't be asking anything regarding G.O.A.T again. That's the gift we received from these three Legends.

Tennis didn’t magically become what it is today in 1968. When the Open Era started, there were 3-4 different pro men’s tours, and no uniform pro women’s tour. Also, the 4 GS tournaments as we know them today, didn’t all become uniform among all players until the late late 80s and early 90s. In the 70s, most top players skipped Australia and skipped the French half of the time. The year-end Championships and tournaments like the Philadelphia Indoors and New York indoors had Grand Slam level prestige. I say all that to say, tennis’s history is way to complicated to base “who’s the GOAT” on most # of Grand Slams or tournaments won-but a lot of tennis fans today don’t know the history of the game, and just go by analytics/numbers

I've been watching tennis for 40 years, and people have this debate every generation. I don't think there is a greatest of all time, because the game evolves every 7-10 years. I remember back in the 80s, everyone thought Borg, Connors, and Mcenroe were the greatest with their volley games and everyone thought they were the greatest. Then Becker came along with his power serve and volley game, and everyone thought he was the GOAT. Then Sampras and Agassi entered in the 90s with their attacking games, and everyone thought they were the greatest. Then Federer came along with his variety game in the early 2000s, and everyone thought he was the greatest. Then Rafa and Djokovic came along with heavier groundstrokes, and now fans of this generation think they're the greatest. I think each player has their strengths and weaknesses. It's impossible to decide who the "greatest" is. I think the best four players are below: - Sampras was the dominant player of the 90s and probably had the best offensive game of any player. Also, he played tennis at a time when the clay and the grass were very different from each other. But he never won the French Open. - Federer was the dominant player from 2000-2010 and has the most longevity of any player. But he lost a lot of big matches to Djokovic and Rafa. - Rafa dominated at the French Open for 15 years, but he never really dominated the game. He was generally the second-best player to Federer during the 2000-2010 era and then the second-best player to Djokovic during the 2011-2020 era. - Djokovic was the best player in the world when Federer, Rafa, and Murray were all playing good tennis from 2011-2020. But he dominated at a time when the surfaces were fairly homogenized, so it was easier to win with a straight up baseline game.

After the 2021 French Open, I'd put Djokovic leading the clubhouse at that point. Minimum 2 of each slam & the non-calendar-year grand slam + most weeks at number 1 make up being behind by 1 in the grand slam tally, after I'd seen it achieved. If Federer's 20 was the yardstick to score on g.o.a.t, Novak could possibly rate 20.5 with those extras. Nadal's 20 include 65% from one major only, less diverse than Federer with minimum 5 of 3 best majors. There was also the missed 2020 Wimbledon which affects the balance - Roger & Novak probably have more claim to an opportunity there than Nadal based on last 10 years, although it's also some opportunity for Rafa to add a 3rd for himself, balancing his spread of majors. One more Australian for Nadal is huge opportunity for matching Djokovic's minimum 2 of each achievement. This or 2 more majors would undisputedly put him on top of the g.o.a.t contest.

@@Sticktothemodels Federer and Nadal don't even own a full set of Masters 1000 titles, so they can hardly share in the unique feat of holding the *two sets* that Novak has achieved. He now also holds the all-time record for most weeks as World No.1, which is yet another landmark achievement that neither of them will ever equal, let alone break. At the end of the day, tennis is as much about *consistency of performance* throughout the season as it is about winning Grand Slams, and the prestigious Masters events are huge indicators of precisely that. Pinning your argument to the Olympic Gold is absurd in this regard since it is an event that only takes place every four years, in which case it's hardly a reliable guide to 'greatness' as it's not an annual event to be competed for. Furthermore, that one victory at Roland Garros that you mention means little in terms of actual numbers as Novak has still achieved 18 Slams with doubtless more to come. Besides, who rules Melbourne Park? Same thing, isn't it? Nine Semi's = nine wins; nine Finals = nine Championships. Just a reminder there to add much-needed balance to your obviously loaded 'point'. Of course Novak's solitary French title did enable him to hold all four Slams at the same time, something that I don't ever recall Federer or Nadal doing, unless you can tell me differently? Incidentally, winning all four of those titles consecutively was yet another pertinent example of that all-important *consistency of performance* that I mentioned previously... .....just as holding winning records against *BOTH* Fed and Rafa similarly demonstrates.

He's not the only player to hold all 4 majors at once. The goat debate isn't over, its over when they all stop playing tennis. What happens if nadal wins the next 3 majors? It will flip again, what happens if djokovic starts losing the h2h against them etc etc. Thwr are far too many variables to say who will end as the best. Literally last year when nadal won the French open, everyone was saying he was the goat. Now djokovic has won the australian open people are saying he is the goat. It changes with every big tournament win. If Federer wins Wimbledon this year, oh Federer is the goat. The debate isn't over until its over for all of their careers.

If Nadal wins the ATP Finals next year he could very well be considered the 🐐 Not to mention he will win some more GS's before he retires.

@John Smith How come ? It is the second most prestigious tournament after the GS's. Nadal has zero titles there, he needs to remedy that before stopping playing in a few years.

he's on his way to beat all the numbers. he will not just in one case: if roger came back winning slams which is unpredictable. but who knows he's the most talented ever.

Every Goat debate I've heard centers around who has the most Grand Slams. This linear-minded argument does no good for the sport's popularity, as why would a casual fan watch a tour level event when they've been told that only Grand Slams matter? In my view a number of records must be included to determine GOAT, most importantly "Most Tournament Titles". Winning a few more Grand Slams does not out weigh the achievement of possessing many more tour tournament victory trophy's in your closet.

Federer is the best we’ve ever seen. Nobody has ever played the way he does. He could have played 50 years ago and won. Not sure the other two could? He uses a small headed racket and doesn’t rely on modern strings and light rackets. Nadal certainly does. And dont get me started on how slow the courts are these days. Federer is made for fast courts while the other two love them slower. 90s court speeds and they wouldn’t win a set against him. Sampras would also murder them two as well on fast surfaces. But hey they are all phenomenal and once they all retire tennis is in big, big trouble.

Players years ago were not as physical. Nadal and Djokovic are beast athletes, do you really think they wouldn't have won with their style? Do you really think players in the 90's could stand that physicality.

Naming the GOAT is difficult in any sport, but, in my opinion, in tennis it's almost impossible. I mean, how reasonable is it to compare between a guy like McEnroe, who, during much of his prime played with a wooden racquet to a guy like Djokovic, who plays with a racquet made of composite materials and which is much lighter and has a head size that's about 50% larger?

It's important to consider if we are considering who was "the best" or who had the best record. In terms of consistency and career performance the three listed were undoubtedly the best. But if we compare all given players at their best I'm not so sure. It's difficult for me to picture any of these three being able to beat McEnroe in his prime, especially if McEnroe had access the modern technology, training, conditioning and coaching that these three had. They were certainly better athletes and hit harder but in tennis touch and control count equally. McEnroe's racket control and accuracy was beyond anything I've ever seen. He also had the ability to control games using his return. Also, people don't talk much about anticipation but in Tennis this is everything and McEnroe's anticipation was super human. It is also safe to say that if he was playing in the same era as these three he would have been more athletic and had a better serve. Great Video.

Interesting to think that Roger, Rafa and Novak may all end up with 20 Majors. Rafa may bag another FO, but he can only hold back Thiem, Medvedev and Zverev for so long. Novak will likely get to 19-20 this year. Roger will be 39 and while my heart says he has a shot at Wimbledon, he's racing against father time as are the others. Sad to think the changing of the guard has begun.

@@sadikmuktar9961 If he is at 21 and no one else is, he should be for now. What Federer fans don;t understand is that they made the rules for the GOAT debate the day Federer surpassed Sampras with 15 slams. Federer has been the GOAT because he has the most slams. Now that that record is in imminent danger if Rafa wins another RG, Federer fans start to use other arguments to make him the goat. The truth is, as I said before, they set the rules, and if a player has more slams than Federer, then that player is the GOAT. I'm a Djokovic fan and I think that as things stand right now, Federer is still the GOAT because he has the most slams (tied with Rafa), but he has been number.1 for so much more than Rafa. Djokovic will soon overtake weeks at number.1, but he is till missing the slams in my opinion.

I feel like Federer had to consistently face the stiffest competition throughout his career (including a prime Djokovic in his later years). But yeah, it's a toss-up between the two imo with Nadal and Sampras right behind them.

people that say Federer isn’t the goat based on his record against djokovic and nadal are casuals, since Federer is 5 years older and when he was in his prime neither were on their primes, and vice versa.
