Hey Nick, the new(ish?) background effect you put behind the slides is nice, but at least in my case, steals some focus power from me and makes it more difficult to concentrate on the slide while listening to you. Please consider adding a more subtle effect, maybe something not as bright, or at a lower speed…🙏

The blue lines are stylish but annoying. I takes the focus from the view, maybe a slower movement would help. As example: run until a topic is ongoing even if its not visible, like the sections in the movie. Pls keep up the good work!

@@sprinklednightsthe preferred option does depend a lot on which gpu, apps, and desktop environment you’re using. Though wayland is getting a lot better and the proprietary nvidia drivers work perfectly on it. Only issue is apps often don’t handle wayland support quite right

What! Copilot lawsuit dismissed? I am not surprised. To me, Wayland is like 2 steps forward, 1 step backward compared to X11. But i prefer to use wayland on my laptop because fractional scaling and touchpad gestures is way better than X11.

Okay, I gotta say I'm extremely pumped about GNOME potentially switching to Inter by default. I'm not wild about Cantarell, and always end up replacing it with Inter via Tweaks anyway, and it looks *so damn nice*.

Goodbye X. You did what you had to do. Long live Wayland. Cosmic is inching closer and closer to being ready for the public. And my excitement is growing with the day. Gnome 47 is looking like a massive release. Tons of awesome features that interest me as somebody that likes to game on my Linux machine and has been eyeing a VR headset for a while. I know KDE already has all these features implemented, but I like Gnome personally.

I am using Inter with Plasma, and I approve of Gnome's switch to it. It looks amazing on UIs. The creator of the font first had named it Interface and later changed it to Inter. It was literally created from the ground up with UIs in mind, and it makes those UI look slick as hell.

I love the accent color theme on Ubuntu's Gnome but it's much much better if it comes by default on Vanilla Gnome. I hope the experience will be smooth just like Gnome 46 when switching light to dark mode.

Due to explicit sync, I don't see horrendous frame pacing issues or flashing! Great but now some apps now crash on me. For example Firefox with hardware acceleration. Or that I cannot use OBS or Spectacle now. I don't what happened but I'm bit upset that we can't have anything perfect.

It seems firefox issue got closed in bugzilla 10th of July( 3 days ago ). It is targeted for firefox 130, but I believe the maintaners of your distro should backport it.

@@xrafter Oh yeah I know about bug report. I am on arch but I am using flatpak so yeah. It also affect all other firefox based browsers :P. OBS is weird one, I am not sure what causing it, but I assume something with explicit sync. I will try to figure out. A lot of apps really stopped behaving correctly and a lot of times it looked like sync problems.

There is nothing perfect . Wayland is still maturing and in FOSS world where developers don't get paid and work purely out of their goodwill, things take time. Either wait patiently, or use X11. But please, don't rant.

I love FOSS and communities around it, I know who works on these projects and how much motivation and effort it brings to do it. I would even donate if I could (regional constraints). I am just saying while it made a lot better, there are still problems that I'm upset about. But I'm not upset at devs not being able to fix them, I understand them. I'm upset about these bugs and how hard it is to deal with. I'm kind of sympathizing here. I hope you understand.

A way to judge the internal health of a corporation is to watch them for sharp practices. Sharp practices is how a company broadcasts that it has a weak management team with no ideas. These tactics precede a fall, often enough, accelerating it exponentially. Glacially slow, at first, then an acceleration of failure. Like an avalanche. Both Apple and Microsoft are coasting on momentum, their sheer size ensures they continue on course even while failing internally. Microsoft prospered due to a contract with IBM in the IBM PC days, a contract that has no more value. Apple has lost the personalities that made it superior, it is now just another company with 'office politicians" dominating. It is how corporations go, their natural life cycle. We see it with Disney.... too.... another example of "coasting on momentum". We are seeing the first corporate exploiters of the digital revolution aging into oblivion. Or so it seems to me.

When Fedora KDE updated to Wayland by default there were quite a few things that stopped working (or working well) for me so I switched back to a X11. Big mistake. It took me about two months to realise that a whole bunch of bizarre problems were being caused by using Fedora KDE 40 in X11. I have to use Wayland now and it forced me to look harder for solutions to my original problems. I found some but I'm still not back to where I used to be under X11. I'm not inclined to recommend Linux to others until this Wayland transition is basically complete across the major distros.

no, afaik it's still installable if one wants, but Wayland is going to be default and x11 has to be installed

Without x11. I'm not so sure if that's a good idea. why well, there's still many of us using way older video cards, while I do have some wayland, some of it though I cant use cause its still buggy. I even once tried wayland only itself and gaming really suffered. I'm betting this will be a mistake and come back and bite them. Sure on the more newest and better hardware, it works, but not for everyone. Why I think it be better to have one with Wayland and the other x11. But that's me. There's many out there that prefer it, I do myself.

The 1 reason I wouldn't remove x11 from GNOME is just that they don't have server side decorations intentionally on wayland, on Plasma is basically not a problem lol

While I am all for wayland becoming the new standard, i will say i think dropping X11 at this point is a bit premature. I still get considerable issues, particularly with XWayland applications being very jittery and glitchy on NVIDIA GPU. On laptops with hybrid graphics there’s no problem because the display renderer is the iGPU either AMD or Intel, but on my desktop, playing games is unviable on Wayland because of this. Not to mention apps like Steam without native wayland support are borderline unusable because of the jitter. Until these small issues are ironed out i think X11 should still be available by default, even if Wayland is preferred.

It's a shame that Linux Gaming channel idea didn't work out. There aren't many I can find on YT, and the few that I have seen don't jive with me on a personal level. I guess the demographic numbers must be abysmally low, but if you know good Linux gaming resources I'm happy to learn of them!

Xp pen tablet drivers don't work in Wayland, before I switched machines and had a wacom tablet it didn't work in Wayland either. I have to use Wayland on plasma though because otherwise it won't work. What a mess.

Editing choices are bold and cool, though I do agree that maybe things should be softened to not distract. The "swoop" sound effect when you move things in and out of frame also interferes with your vocal range a little.

Dropping X11: "There will be some incompatibilities" = you'll have to change some software, you'll have to downgrade your workflow or just accept some features do not exist (like keeping track of the the positions of multi-windowed apps on single and multiple screens, so you have to arrange them every single time you start your app) :))

Mi se pare cam iresponsabil ce se face cu X11, chiar și în contextul Fedora (care sincer nu pricep de ce e recomandat ca general use, inclusiv pentru cei care n-au mai avut Linux). În general renunți la ceva așa mare câțiva ani DUPĂ ce e gata cel nou, ca să fii sigur că cel nou deja merge bine în vasta majoritate a cazurilor, și să aibă timp și lumea să facă switch-ul în pace, în ritmul lor. Dar Wayland tot are lipsuri. Și, nu, nu accept scuza cu "trebuie să forțăm utilizatorii să fie beta testeri, ca să avem mai multe bug reports". Aș putea s-o înghit dacă n-ar mai fi buguri sau funcționalități la care să se lucreze. Dar cât timp e de muncă, ar trebui să fie o opțiune simplă opt in, nu ce face Fedora.

Recunosc ca poate fi o evolutie importanta Wayland-ul, dar ca si in alte domenii, am impresia ca cine le gandeste si face nu le si foloseste ca sa vada efectiv cum merge in diverse combinatii. La fel si astia care decid eliminarea X11. Eventual, poate au o utilizare monovalenta, simplista, si in cazul lor nu sunt probleme importante. Eu ma vad fortat sa am alt soft de remote control, altul mai prost de screenshot, programul platit pentru editare PDF nu imi merge, in combinatie Optimus cu Nvidia nu imi mergea deloc (cica ar merge cu driverele noi, dar nu am mai incercat). Si ar mai fi vreo doua. Apoi oune universitățile, spitalele, cercetatorii (inclusiv CERN) care folosesc mai multe monitoare si soft-uri multi-window si se vad aruncati sub autobuz (parca suna mai bine in engleza) ca Wayland nu are inclus un management al marimii (de asta nu sunt sigur) si pozitionarii ferestrelor (asta sigur nu are), la fiecare pornire ti le deschide random; puteau baga si ei un failsave sa fie compatibilitate cu aplicatiile care nu fac asta intern, sa nu trebuiasca rescrise toate programele din punctul asta de vedere.

Sadly I still need x11 to run Krita scaled properly. From what I've seen the devs have no plans to support Wayland any time soon. I'm running Fedora; hopefully I'll be fine until Krita gets updated. I always find distro hopping to be a pain.

Can't for Pop!_OS 24.04 to come out alpha. They mentioned that's when Cosmic alpha will land as well. Gonna install it on my ThinkPad and replace Kubuntu 23.10 in there. Tuxedo OS and Plasma will still be on my gaming PC.

as a regular, somewhat tech-savvy user, the decision to remove X11 is still short sighted to me. It was very, very recently that the nvidia drivers on fedora distributions broke completely and a gui was not accessible without X11. Had it not been installed along with wayland, I would have been lost. I understand that it is still "available" but regular users aren't going to go out of their way to install it, and if...no, WHEN... things do break, people without knowledge of how linux works will be out of luck. This is just not the right move right now with the status of wayland and nvidia. Someone had to rip the bandaid off tho, so in that respect, I approve.

@@toara I use wayland primarily. I'm ok with pushing people towards it, if that wasn't clear. My point is an average user won't have the same ability as the rest of the users to repair an install that breaks due to a bug. that's all. it wasn't necessarily easy to troubleshoot; my desktop would freeze and crash as soon as i logged in. i had to open a different tty and troubleshoot via the command line and manually launch X to have any chance. Again, wayland is the future and I'm here for it.

The way I look at it is that Wayland issues will continue to get improved upon. The issues with X11 will not. While I certainly run into issues here and there with Wayland, they are getting less and less every update. I say this even though I am running a newer Nvidia card (4070) which itself brings some additional complexity.

Wayland still has many issues. Push to talk chat apps don't work if your mouse is not over the app itself, some gaming issues arise on wayland only, visual problems, etc. This is not good news, Wayland might be close, but it's not there yet. In my opinion anyway.

Yeah, I'm all for it being the option, but removing X11 when Wayland is not ready (not to mention that the standard should be years AFTER it is generally ready, so everybody can have a smooth transition and at their own pace. And I don't have a problem with Fedora specifically that it's doing that, I have a problem that Fedora is recommended as a general-use distro, including for newcomers. If I was a newcomer trying now Linux because I don't want to upgrade to Windows 11 and hearing "Linux is much less bloated, runs much better, much faster, needs less RAM" I would think "great, so my 8 year old laptop will have no issues" then I might install Fedora with Wayland which would work horrible because I have GTX 1060 and all the nice improvements lately are only for RTX 2000 and up. And GTX 1060 in particular still is a very VERY popular GPU, still a LOT of people using it.

My main concern with Wayland is that last time I tried it, I realized it didn't let Remmina capture keys. Don't know if the problem is with Wayland or Remmina, though, but without that ability I can't properly remote into stuff. I hope things like this gets solved.

Great video, Nick, but that 'lightcycle' effect around the text cards is extremely distracting and annoying. On its own it may be a cool effect but in this context it is truly awful, especially when the user has a dark theme on the computer. I am autistic and if this persists I feel I may have to unsubscribe from what is otherwise a very good channel. The contrast between the light and dark of the effect is quite extreme and it would help if this could be reduced. Also, the speed is much too fast. It's one thing being dramatic but this takes it too far. I'm not sure a blur effect would help here. While it may sound counter-intuitive, it may be worth trying adding more 'lightcycles' to the 'track' so that the very bright lead of the moving line never actually fades to black - I'm thinking that with several it would then appear to be a much less obviously modulating border compared to the current single one resulting in very marked contrast modulation.

I must say I am not that excited to see the cosmic alpha because I really like the gnome look and feel, but oddly I am very curious about the ElementaryOS 8. I tried to use elementary a lot of times and always failed, because it always lacks some basic functionality, but somehow I have hope for this new version with wayland and flatpak. Although I know I will probably stay on fedora, I am really anxious to test Elementary 8.

When it comes to the most anti-consumer gaming companies in the world. Epic Games is right up their with Ubisoft, 2K and EA for me. Actually they're higher, I can actually play my games on EA and Ubisoft's launcher when I'm offline. I don't have reliable internet sometimes my WiFi goes down for a whole day, and since I live in a rural area, my families options for internet are extremely limited. Epic Games does NOT make it any easier to put up with it. Even if there is a way to play games in offline mode, which okay for Fortnight I get, but I only bother with Epic Games when I wanna play Kingdom Hearts on PC (Thank you SE for finally bringing it to Steam) I haven't been able to find it easily. Even Ubisoft's launcher lets me play their games offline, the same company that's literally taking away product keys from people, let people play their games offline. Of course not having native Linux support doesn't help either, but I'll give them a pass it's not like Epic Games is the only company that doesn't support the Linux platform.

I mus say wayland is rasy to use on amd. I always had really bad problems in the past with wayland but I have installed fedora lately firgot that it is on wayland an I had 0 problems. The gaming performance is for some reason even few fps better than xfce with disabled compsitor.

As long as nvidia releases a new stable driver before fedora switches to Wayland. I've been having massive graphical issues with KDE + Wayland with the proprietary drivers, it's nearly unusable atm.
