This reminds me of the time I had an old Chevy van. That van model was dead simple. Hardly any electronics. Well, the alternator voltage regulator went out on it. I didn't notice for a few weeks. I got suspicious that my headlights were "quite bright" when doing 55mph and not quite as bright when idling. So, had it tested. Yep. Voltage regulator shot. Despite driving it for weeks with who knows how much overvoltage, I changed out the alternator and it kept running for a few years until the transmission went out. I think overvoltage issues are mainly with the modern cars that have so many electronics. The older cars? Meh. The Lada seems to be built "very simply" to function for one sole purpose: to get you from point A to point B and nothing more.

Pretty valid charging circuit: The diode rectifies the voltage, and the bulb limits the current. The battery has a lower impedance than the bulb, so it can always get a voltage higher than the allowed limit of 14.2V (that´s why you should stop charging before exceeding this voltage, it won´t stop by itself). You can double the current by using four diodes in a full bridge configuration. It´s still a pretty inefficient way to charge, but it´s simple, and it works in an emergency. Suitable diodes are pretty much inside every switching power supply. Just in case you are in trouble, you could cannibalize a diode or the complete full bridge rectifier from some device and make your car run again.

The Car battery is a rather robust piece of electrical equipment. Due to it's low internal resistance, it is able to just short out any incoming voltage, which is not polarized - in this case - a power output of 220V AC. If the battery itself can handle over 100 amps during start-up, it can also take any amperage below it. That's why the circuit breaker pops out - the battery was just acting like a short circuit. I bet, that the alternator itself was beginning to heat up significantly after removing the regulator. After removing the battery, to was not under a load from the battery and was able to generate high voltage which ultimately - fried the coils responsible for generating sparks in the engine. You would kill them by connecting 220V directly to a car, but without battery as well.

Should try starting it from a welding transformer. that should be able to deliver the current needed. Might want to add a full bridge rectifier so the starter doesnt run in reverse. Or even lazier. Just replace the starter with a 230v motor😅
3 жыл бұрын
Well, that's just single diode rectifier with current limited by lightbulb resistance. Surely without lightbulb you will push as much amps as powered device will take and most probably burn the diode. Also what you are interested is voltage across battery terminals which depends on current and resistance. That's why it's not 220V on the battery when you use proper light bulb. Just as a reminder, voltage always drops if there is not enough current available so by reducing resistance (bigger lightbulb) you let higher current to run through and that slightly increases voltage. Surely it would be better with full bridge rectifier which you basically double the power keeping the same current, even better with capacitor that would flatten the voltage - now you have simple AC-DC converter. After that you have to regulate two things. Max voltage and amperage. For initial charging it's fine, the voltage will be low. The problem will happen when you leave it running for too long as the voltage will slowly go up together with battery resistance as it is charging. You may end up with something like 100V with lightbulb setup, not great. That's why even cheapest chargers use transformer to make it impossible to go above 15V. Better chargers are actually monitoring the voltage and regulating how much power is delivered. You can clearly see the difference in size between something like Noco Genius charger vs regular charger.

I wonder... I know some older direct drive starter motors I have used were universal motors instead of permanent magnet motors. I bet if you used a resistive load or a beefy variac or something you could run the starter right off AC! You might have to bypass the solenoid and just feed it DC (maybe from an almost dead battery?) to get it to push the gear into the flywheel or flex plate though. I don't know what the direct drive universal motor starters run but I think some of modern permanent magnet gear reduction starters are only rated for something like 1500 watts so that would be around 7 amps at 220 volts. I would think the big universal motors would take more but it seems like they would be inside the range of your breakers so you might just be able to make one work!

my brother had a nissan altima that had a bad regulator in the alternator. when he would start it, it'd run fine at idle but the voltage would jump to around 16-17v and the engine would bog and not want to start after. What had happened was it had a electrical protection from this exact issue and would save the electronics by not allowing the engine out of limp mode

I suspect a good load to limit current instead of light bulbs might be a universal motor like an angle grinder. It has inductance. Keep the bad battery connected so that it will keep the car circuits from blowing up. And for the rectifier you can order ones with high ampere ability for a dollar or two. You could also try taking the diodes from the alternator. If you do some of that, you could make it actually work.

Alternator diodes can go out at 32volts. Might want to use 200volt diodes

I really like the simple battery charger! Great Idea, can be very useful in an emergancy! I would use an electric heater insted of the light bulb. It would work even better in 110V regions

@@WolfmanDude Explain why 120v would be better? Just double the current? You have to remember that on 120V land the breakers are still usually 15 to 20A for small stuff. 30A, 40A, 50A and so on for bigger stuff, that also comes with 240V.

With the rims nowadays it seem the rotor and calipers are often super exposed so much so that it would be easy to pour oil over the whole thing with a long nose funnel. So do it and drive around like you don’t know somebody did it after doing it.

7:23 Really neat! Right before it fries you see the wires jump- that's gotta be a magnetic field, right? I just plain won't touch 220v, I get shocked often enough on 110, which is safe if you're not sitting in a puddle
