what different grains do you mix to feed calves
@TW-kk5nm6 жыл бұрын
Just curious if your nutritionist recommended this feed. Calves we raise won't touch fines and I know how fines can be a problem as they get closer to grower weights, granted you feed hay I seen.

I noticed "bugs" in the feed. Is that normal? Will this harm the animal when they eat the feed?

Should I leave the calf starter out at all times? If so how much? Right now I put out 2 handfuls for both bull calfs started with one handfull. 1 calf is 5 weeks the other 3 weeks. They also get 2 quarts milk twice a day. New to raising cattle. Any advice is appreciated.

I have a couple questions. 1. Is using a cull cow worth the extra work? 2. Where is the best place to get replacer?
@FarmandHammer6 жыл бұрын
Justin Allen We currently have a 3 quartered first time Holstein cow that raised two for us this year, next year she will raise 3 or 4. So far I would say if you are raising more than 20 I would do it by hand. If you have space for more cows I would try using bad milk cows. But with cows you still have to separate them and then let them drink in the morning and evening. We just get our milk replacement from our local feed store. It’s about $70 a bag and one bag feeds one calf till they are weaned. You can also order it online but it’s a whole lot more expensive unless you buy it in huge bulk. Hope that helped! I’m going to try using more nurse cows in the future, but I don’t have a whole lot of experience with them yet.

What is the commercial feed? What is in it? What protein percent?
@FarmandHammer6 жыл бұрын
Steve Pickerill I will try and make a video on that this one week. It would take to long to put it in the comments but I’ll do my best to explain it over video. The calves are on only commercial feed currently so I should be able to show some examples too.

how many holstein calves to you raise a year? and do you sell to the auction or private sell? and do you make a profit? and when or weight do you sell at?
@FarmandHammer6 жыл бұрын
We used to raise a total of 80 a year, 40 in the fall, and 40 in the spring. But we took a few years off and this year I decided to do it by myself. We normally sell at the sales barn, but this year I might try private treaty. Back when we used to raise a lot, we made about $150 per calf and that was when the cattle market was low. But as kids, that was good money. Now I am aiming for $200-250 profit per calf, but I wont know for sure until I sell them. When I do sell them I plan on making a few videos on prices and profits, so make sure your subscribed!

I subscribed to your channel , I watch all your videos. I enjoy watching i look forward to the new videos. what weight do you sell the holsteins? I started raising holsteins this year..So just trying learn more on raising holsteins.. i normally raise black angus feeders to about max weight of 750-800 pounds. thank you looking forward to the videos
@FarmandHammer6 жыл бұрын
new farmer theoretically 900-1200lbs is ideal weight and will normally maximize your profits. If you get them over 1200lbs feedlots don’t want to buy them because they can’t put that much more weight on them. And if you sell them less than 900lbs they do turn you profits but not as much as they should. As always, it really depends on market prices when you sell. Thanks for the support!

what grain rations do you feed and what do the cows gain per day?
@IHateMyLifeBro4 жыл бұрын
no no no give them grass
@FarmandHammer4 жыл бұрын
Baby calves have to have milk or grain at this age. And bottle calves are weaned off milk earlier than a calf that stays on a cow, so there needs to be a protein source that replaces the milk. Grass and any other forage for that matter will not meet their nutritional requirements.
