They get fed a total of 2-3 cubes of beef heart split up into 2 feedings daily. I also give a cube of blood worms a few times a week. As of right now I make a 70% water change every 4 nights. Depending on work and other obligations it can be changed anywhere between 3 up to even 7 nights in rare instances.

@@thugstermlbb630 You are correct that by feeding beef heart you will need to do more frequent water changes, but you should not need to do daily water changes. I currently do a 70% water change once every 4-5 days. One thing you can do is to monitor your nitrate levels in the tank and if they are trending upwards you would need to increase the frequency of the water changes. That’s a pretty good gauge for a water change schedule.

Thanks for the comment! I don't believe it has much effect on the water parameters, but it certainly provides a good substrate for dense/fast plant growth. I only use it in the refugium and change it every 6-10 months, once I start to notice the plant growth slowing. If you were to use it in the main tank, I would think you would still be best to do weekly water changes and would need to cover it with sand to keep it from being stirred up by the fish.

Thanks! I think it really just depends on the discus you have. I've never had problems with my discus eating smaller fish, but it can definitely happen.

I've looked at Kenny's Discus before and they are awesome, but I love Stendker's! I've never tried black worms as they are not readily available around here, but may order some online to try. I know a lot of people like them! The mix I'm feeding in the video contains salmon, shrimp, multivitamins tabs, calcium tabs, garlic, paprika and cichlid flake food in addition to beef heart. Beef heart is used by a lot of hobbyists because it is so lean. Compared to chicken, beef heart is similar in terms of protein and calories. It's also a good source of B vitamins and Iron.

Beef heart is very easy to get. Check out Mark Weiss viedo . He has been keeping Discus longer than myself...My first batch of fry was over 38 years ago. Never use beef heart, and neither does Mr. Weiss, he has a great recipe. All the worms I use are freeze dried and raised in old trout farms. The live ones are filthy.
