Thanks for the video buddy! I am a chef for living so I think I am going to play around a bit with the ingredients! Also I'm lucky to have a industrial meat grinder to disposal ;)

That will definitely come in handy! My grinder is junk, but gets the job done with a little effort haha

Discus101 hi, can we give just beef heart and salmon with spinach and garlic as those are easily available in my nearest supermarket? I am not sure the other ingredients I can buy it from local shops. Or adding granules to beef heart would help? Can we add general multivitamin tablets used by human?

what water you use for mix the gelatin? hot water, warm water or cool water?
@discus1018

Hot water. You can just use hot water from the faucet. I would not make it boiling hot as it may start to cook the beef heart some when you mix it.

Doesn't the paprika colour your water ? The minced portion looked good enough to roll out and freeze , have you ever tried just doing that so there's bigger meat chunks for them to eat ?
@discus1018

I haven't had problems with discolored water from the paprika. I think the gelatin helps to keep it from polluting the water any more than a store bought beef heart mix. I've always ground it as fine as I can get it and they still eat it by the chunk when it's dropped in the tank. Bigger chunks would probably be fine, too, as long as they're able to tear it up while eating it.

Which brand of multi vitamin and calcium do you use and in Omaha where do you buy your beef heart?
@discus1018

I use the HyVee brand of Multivitamin and Calcium with Vit D3. I buy the beef heart from Rick's Meats in Elkhorn.

Excellent! We live out west right close to Elkhorn. As soon as I get a couple days off, I am really considering trying this recipe. In the past I've always bought the frozen foods in cubes. Maybe a dumb question, but how do you break off pieces from the one gallon bags? Break off chunks size of a typical cube?
@discus1018
@discus1018 6 жыл бұрын
The recipe is easy, but it takes a few times before you will get quick with it. Trimming the beef heart takes the most time and is pretty tedious. Not a dumb question at all! It's too thick to break into cubes. Once it freezes in the bag, I take it out of the freezer and let it sit for about 5 minutes or so. I can then use a steak knife to cut it in strips and then cut the strips in cubes I place the cubes in zip lock sandwich bags and place back in the freezer.

Oh ok...this makes sense. I keep 9 tanks so in many of my tanks I could use this same food as for my discus tank, so I really want to try it. Thanks for the video, so helpful and glad to know there is another experienced discus keeper in Omaha! God bless!

No problem, glad the videos helped! I have a cichlid tank and an Asian biotope aquarium with gouramis and clown loaches. 9 is impressive! My wife thinks 3 is too many! Haha

Did you use cooked or raw shrimp?
@discus1018
@discus1018 2 жыл бұрын
They are cooked. Some people prefer raw, but I've never had issues with cooked. It makes up a relatively small percentage of the total mix so you could go either way.

is the vitamin for fish or humans
@discus1018
@discus1018 4 жыл бұрын
They are just generic multivitamin tablets and generic calcium + vitamins D tablets. You can buy them at any decent sized grocery store or any Walgreens/CVS. There's a summary of ingredients in the description of the video, but just keep in mind that the recipe is more of a general guideline. This is not an exact science, you are only trying to make a healthy food for expensive fish! So if you end up using more beef heart and leave out salmon or use one fewer vitamin, that's ok. It's the general idea that counts. Take your time when making the food because it's a lengthy process. After this video was made I ended up buying an electric grinder and that does help speed things up.

what kind of flakes are you adding. your not really explaining
@discus1018

Omega One Cichlid Flakes. You can pretty clearly see the bottle around 12:50-13:05, but I should have included the name. Most fish flakes would be fine as you are primarily using them to help soak up liquid and make a paste.

I do like Omega Cichlid flakes because they are high in protein. Plus, I already have them around for a cichlid tank.

@@EuroGupper I’ve never had any issues. It’s pretty commonly used among breeders and you’ll find it listed as an ingredient in some of the beef heart recipes out there. I would think it could possibly make the water a little cloudier or the discus might not eat it if there’s too much added, but I wouldn’t think it would harm the fish.
