The ultimate solenoid showdown! In this episode, I compare 4 different types of solenoids to see which one I like best for the bumpers, slingshots, and flippers. On top of that, I install a powerful DIY shaker motor that vibrates the entire cabinet!

That was so smart to install a fuse for each solenoid, and the way that you did it worked out really well. In a real pinball machine, I had a solenoid short out, get glowing hot red, and fill the machine with smoke. Shut it down just short of Fire.

It's always a good idea tonadd fuses, but for solenoids especially so. They can indeed catch fire!

I installed a full set of real pinball coils in my machine, and I'm glad I did. They really do give a heck of an authentic thunk sound and feel.

If I had to change one thing about my cabinet it's definitely swap out the contactors for real bumpers. It's just too weak compared to real pins and that is quite obvious in my shed, where the vpin sits next to real pins

@@overtinker.projects Yep, from hearing them on a lot of videos, it seems like the solenoids/contactors add some "click" while the pinball coils add some "thump".

@@circusfreakRob that's a good description. Although the contactors have a small thump as well, but no where near real bumpers

You can put small tpu rings inside the open frame solenoids to make them less harsh. Helped a lot for my 12v solenoids. I see yours already have rings on the outside.
@overtinker.projects
@overtinker.projects 4 ай бұрын
That sounds like a good idea. I also think I could have played around with different positions for the solenoids, like installing them on a cross beam. In the end the contactors on combination with the SSF I'll show in the next video suffice for me

My wife doesn't want me to set up a full-sized pinball machine at home. Therefore, I would like to buy something similar to: Pin Station by Gibson Pinball. This is a standalone controller for playing pinball on PC and in VR. However, it is currently unavailable for purchase. You have unique technical knowledge and experience. I, along with many others, would happily buy small pinball game controllers from you. Why do people need small pinball controllers? Because they can be easily shipped worldwide. Also, they are in much higher demand. Not everyone can afford a real large pinball table. It's not just about money, but also about the available space at home. Many people rent their homes. They would never buy a large table, but they would gladly buy a small realistic pinball controller. -- Dude, you yourself are already a global brand in the world of mini pinball controllers! This niche is free and not yet occupied by anyone. Why don't you want to turn your experience, knowledge, and skills into a business and make money? -- There are many people who are good electricians, good electronic engineers, good programmers, and good sound specialists. I could assemble a team from them. But if they are not passionate about pinball, they will not ultimately produce anything good. -- You have all of this at once! You could offer people three controller options based on a universal platform: Entry-level. Advanced level. And top-level. Today, no one in the world offers this.

Sorry to say, this is rather a bad example video of how to connect solenoids, I would suggest people do NOT follow this advice in regards on how to connect solenoids unless they like to destroy their hardware... If you note @2:30 how much of a spark you get, that is back EMF voltage being released from a charged coil and you MUST have an arrestor such as a suitable reverse diode across the coil inputs to short that massive spike before it hits back at your controller and computer and eventually kills every circuit connected, especially with many solenoids. I would suggest redoing the video since that is both a danger for your hardware and also a potential hazard. I would also suggest people do not try fuses via trial and error. If the coils do not have a datasheet stating the current, measure it with a multimeter then choose something suitable in a fuse that is not too far above this value. Would also highly suggest never just connecting these raw like this, get a proper solenoid driver/saver board that is designed with fuses in-built, back EFM and also automatic current adjustment to save both burning the solenoid and pulling huge amounts of power.

These are valid concerns, and I may not have mentioned it for the flipper and slingshots assemblies, but all devices in my cab have a flyback diode to prevent the voltage spikes you are talking about. Trial and error might not be the best method for determining fuses, but it has saved me a couple of times already with a stuck slingshot whicj caused the fuse to pop, so in my opinion it works exactly as intended. And finally, the Pinscape controller has a 3rd board that I didn't install called the Chime Board, which is designed especially for larger coils like this. It has hardware timers to prevent stuck on coils and some other specific features. I didn't plan on using real flipper mechs at first, so I didn't include this board, but the regular Pinscape Power Board also features software timers to prevent stuck coils and that has served me well enough until now. As a small sidenote, I've been playing on this machine for 2 years now since I completed it and it has been working just fine without any issues :)
