The journey is complete. We started building my Mother a Virtual Pinball Cabinet in March of 2021 as a Christmas Gift, and it turned out better than we could have imagined. Since my Mom is 85 years old, we had to come up with a custom, one of a kind design for her specific needs. In this Special Edition of GYGO (which means longer run time than usual) we show you what we came up with.
A special thanks to Terry Red, Major Frenchy and the whole Virtual Pinball community who fueled our interest for this build. This wouldn't have been possible without you all. To Steve at Zeb's Boards, thanks for making some of the best VP Hardware in the business!

Just found your channel bc of VR. I am a pinball collector and I’m also into vpx BUT in VR! You have to check it out as it combines two things you love. Plus is so much more impressive! Vpx vr. You can use this build as the controller and just replace monitors with vr headset. It’s how I do it You can’t beat the depth vr provides vs that flat effect you get with your current build. GL

Hi delt35, and welcome to the channel. O' Believe me I've played pinball in VR and it IS amazing for sure. This build was for my mother, who is 86 now so she isn't really a VR enthusiast. What I plan to do someday, is build that front mockup piece out and use it for a controller like you recommend. Have you tried Pinball FX VR? If so how does it compare to VPX VR? Thanks for watching and commenting.
@delt35

@@GYGOtv As an owner of 12 real pinball machines, the physics of these virtual tables is REALLY important. IMO, VPX 10.7 and above (especially the tables being made by the VPW group) come the closest to feeling real. Pinball FX, including the VR version is just not up to task and either is future pinball, regardless of how many physics updates happen to it. For my money, VPX is the only player in town.

@@GYGOtv hard to say. Not sure what your build cost in materials and time. You'd obviously want to make a slight margin or at least break even when starting. My 9-5 is in the Healthcare and Senior Living industry and this is definitely not in a facility activity room or in a senior apartment. If someone can roll up to this machine in a wheelchair, you may have yourself a neat spot in healthcare. 👍

@@funtyes1970 thanks David, I appreciate the comment. Only the best for my mom! So yeah we tried to do everything that made sense to us. We didn't do any kind of table surround sound because you had to turn off the audio in PinballFX3 to make that work and I felt like you lost too many other little sounds that were included in the game to make the trade-off worthwhile. We've done some preliminary figures and we might be able to put something somewhat like this together for around $5,000 possibly.

Thanks for the view and the compliment. We started with a 32-inch Samsung Q50 TV (which is a 4K QLED), we liked it so much that we wanted a second one and by that time, the newer model Q60 (also 32-inch) was available so we bought that one and used it for the playfield. They are almost the exact same, they even use the same case... but the startup screen is slightly different and the remote on the Q60 has a solar panel (totally irrelevant for this project). I can tell you the Color is amazing and you defiantly need 4k for the clarity on the Pinball Machine. Sometimes it doesn't even look like a TV, looks more like a printed poster or something. You do have to make sure the TV switches to "Game Mode" otherwise we has some lag and stuttering during gameplay. Another really cool feature of these TVs is that they can be set to turn on when they get power, which is what makes it possible to have the single button startup. As for the legs, we went with these overly expensive ones (www.amazon.com/gp/product/B08436BT53/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o04_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1). The 2 things we had to consider were each leg needed it's own motor instead of the cheaper ones having a single motor that has a bar that turns the second leg (because we cut out the middle part and put the legs closer together). And also needed it to go low enough to sit at so we needed a "3-Stage" unit which can go down as low as 23.5 inches, otherwise the 2-Stage could only go down to 27 inches, which was still a little too high to sit at. I will warn you, this thing can be raised high enough that it would hit the ceiling so you don't want little kids having free access to the controls :) Hope that answers your question and thanks again for watching the video!

Hi Skip, thanks for the question. I used x360ce to emulate the xbox buttons. Here is a video I found that shows it at the beginning kzfaq.info/get/bejne/fNCDa7mAztvPZn0.html. Also, the cool thing with the ZEB stuff is you can actually program the buttons to be specific key presses if you want. It is all in the ZEB documentation and you have to edit the configuration files but it is powerful once you figure it out. I did this for some of the keypresses (Like ESC because that actually pauses and backs out of menus unlike the XBox control that you had to use 2 different buttons for that). Hope that helps and let me know if you have any other questions.

Thanks for the view and comment. Actually the software is PinballFX3, which I purchased through Steam. They are about to launch a new version (just called PinballFX see zenstudios.com/games/pinball-fx/) which will be exclusive to the EPIC Store so might be worth waiting to see what that has. The Pinball software handles the backglass and DMD placement but you have to get a Free Code from Zen first to unlock that feature on Pinball FX3. All you have to do is show them a photo of your setup with the dual screens and they will likely send you the unlock code. Now if you are going to do the Solenoids you will need additional software called DOF and DOF Linx to do that. Go watch those videos I have linked in the description for Terry Red and Major Frenchy and they will explain it in more detail. I will warn you, building a virtual pinball machine with all the bells and whistles is NOT PLUG AND PLAY. It takes quite a bit of work to get all the hardware and software up and running. Yep, 1650 might be good. The 1080 runs 99 percent of the stuff good, just some slight lag on the Williams tables once in awhile (like multiball) with all the physics and things those tables do. 4k can be surprisingly demanding even on a pinball game.

@@funtyes1970 yeah 3060s were never 1500... is there something wrong with your head? 3080s only just barely went over 2k 1500 would have been an overpriced 3070. Stop trying to pretend like you know what you are talking about.

a 3080ti... lol, that should be sufficient ;)

Well the 3080ti is in my main machine, those specs are just my standard "boilerplate" text. The pinball machine is actually using my old 1080 which runs the 4k screens pretty good. Sorry for any confusion but thanks for stopping by and leaving a comment.

@@GYGOtv Ah ok, compliments for the build, a lot of features build in! I build one myself and used a 1060, which wasn't enough for 4k, upgraded to a 3060 and that's perfect now. I like the solenoid switch, the noise is keeping me from building it in, do you need to enable sound effects after disabling the solenoids?

@@lievensnl Thanks for the view and the comment! Ya, the 1080 is probably minimum for 4k. It plays great 99% of the time, but every once in awhile I get the slightest stutter when going multi-ball on the Williams Tables. 3060 should be butter smooth. I keep the sound effects on all the time, they work perfectly complementing the noise of the solenoids as the sounds blend together nicely and the added vibration really makes it all come together. I will warn you, be sure to get "Continuous Duty" solenoids for the 2 flippers because regular solenoids will burn out if you sit there and hold a flipper down continuously like I tend to do when doing specific shots etc. Automotive solenoids are fine for the other 8 as they are just quick hits from the bumpers. Also, depending on how you mount the solenoids will affect how they sound. If you see how we mounted the ones at the bottom of the cabinet basically with the top of the solenoid touching the base of the cabinet... those are the loudest for sure. The ones that are just bracketed behind the TV are not as loud... so theoretically you could adjust how noisy you want your solenoids by experimenting with their mounting style. Hope that helps, and good luck with your build.

Pinball FX so schlecht einfach nur arkade. Viel besser und am besten ist VPX.

So the translation to this I think is "Pinball FX so bad just plain arcade. Much better and best is VPX." From my experience Pinball FX3 has far better graphics and the ability to tilt the table to different views, and you can turn off the "arcade" features on the real tables but I admit it is more "Arcady" than real pinball. My limited experience with the others however is that the graphics (especially the ball) doesn't look nearly as good. But in the end, doesn't really matter which is better or worse. We built this machine for my 85 year old mother, and she plays Pinball FX3, so why would we build it for anything other than that for her?

@@GYGOtv Well you aren't very experience. VPX has a free camera mode where you can position it anywhere. There are more tables on VPX and the graphics on VPX are also better... did you even try it or just decided that PinFX must be better because it is all packaged up and ready to go?

@@thomgizzizI'm glad you think VPX is "better", as I mentioned this was built for my Mother who likes PinballFX3. She already owned a ton of tables so why would I build something that isn't what she likes? And for the record, I tried VPX and some tables where good and some were bad... PinballFX3 is at least consistent in quality. Feel free to like what you want, but don't say people "aren't very experienced" just because they don't like what you do and especially when you have no idea how much experience we have.
