Fencing in our Great Pyrenees. I didn't want to, but we had to do it!

If you've been following our channel, you know about the trouble we've been having with keeping our Great Pyrenees, Betty & Bernard, from escaping the property. Well, the e-collar is no longer enough to keep them home since their instincts to go after predators are just too strong.
Using the e-collar has allowed them to have free and full access to anywhere on our property, which has kept all wildlife at bay, but now they no longer have free range which means its only a matter of time before the coyotes and other wildlife figure it out. Our chickens and coop are no longer protected by them with this fencing solution and with the active coyote presence I feel its only a matter of time before something bad happens to our chickens. The trade off is we're keeping our dogs safe, for now.
As of the posting of this video, we're one week into this fencing solution and so far they have not made any escapes nor has there been evidence of any attempts to escape despite the continued coyote presence. While it's working so far to keep them home, it isn't allowing them to protect our entire property.
While I do believe the e-collars work in discouraging them from roaming for no reason, the truth is its only a mental barrier for them. The temporary discomfort of any shock or pain is worth it for them to go after coyotes. If you're considering the use of e-collars for your great pyrenees, I'd say its better than nothing but be prepared to come up with a better solution. The collars worked for us flawlessly for 3 years, but now it only works when Betty & Bernard want it to work. They're smart dogs driven by instinct.

What did Bernard eat from under that pile? Our girl (GP) ate an injured baby bird while I was walking her and I almost died. She scooped it up in her mouth before I could stop her and a few minutes later I heard, “crunch, crunch, crunch.” Again, I almost died.

LOL, it was a field rat. They catch them all the time and I have never been able to stop them from eating them. And yes, they've had baby birds also that have fallen out of the tree....

When my first pyr was a pup he ate a dead bird. I saw a wing hanging out of his mouth and told him it was his! I wasn't going to touch it!

I don't understand this at all. I've got a male intact Great Pyrenees , and coyotes that live not to far from here. Around this time, the coyotes are out foraging around showing their pups the ropes of life. My dog hears them almost nightly calling to each other,he moves to the fence line and starts his warning barking. Once, when he was 6 months old,a pack of coyotes came calling. I wasn't home, but my neighbors say it was quite a fight. Lehoi got some scratches, that had to get stitched up, but the coyotes never came back. Ever. This was over a year ago. No electric fence,no electronic collar needed.

The coyotes here also know better than to come onto our property, but bc GPs also have an instinct to protect "their" land, they see all the land around us as theirs bc we don't have any neighbors. The coyotes used to walk right along the perimeter of our property taunting our dogs bc they knew our GPs wouldn't leave our property, until they did.

My boys don’t have a fence so they aren’t allowed out unleashed. They are roamers which worries me because we live on a busy road. We’ve got coyotes in the neighborhood, I’ve never heard them but the neighbors have cattle and have lost some. My boys bark at all the “things” at night. I’ve had to tell the kids this is what the dogs are meant to do.

oh yea, the barking is no joke but its for good reason! Wish I got it on video, but at 1am this morning I stepped out to see why Bernard was barking like crazy and sure enough there were 2 coyotes standing in our yard taunting him.

Daniel, my Pyr has destroyed light chain-link fencing, so I am leery of the welded wire. I would love to let Otis out unfettered, but he would be gone in an instant. When he hears coyotes, he goes insane, and would not stop until he caught them. My main fear is he would chase them across a road and get hit by humans.

Yea, its really too bad we can't just let them do what they instinctually want to do. 2 strand hot wire cattle fence has worked for us so far, but its only on the back of our property.

Hey man I got a female pup I’m trying to make stay on the property and be good off leash. She does well with my golden doodle is is real loyal and stays right by my side. Trying to just train and expose the wandering out of her. What was your experience with the female pup deciding to stay close

Our GP Boy is always running off into other people’s property. He has to wear the shock collar all the time because it’s the only way we can get him to come back. It’s very annoying.

Yup! Does the shock actually get him to come back? What collar is it?

Coyotes would be a lot less brave if they got up close and personal with the dogs. Hope you can figure the problem out man.

Your fences needs to be about 5 ft tall. 6 ft is better. When the coyotes call at night my male is long gone.

we now have them contained in the back part of our property that has some fencing and hot wire. And we got some bottle calves to keep them company. That along with the collar has kept them at bay (so far).
Two dogs and one speeding car - WATCH this before you get a Great Pyrenees! Do shock collars work?
