The sound of the Fender "tweed" amps has become a staple of modern guitar music since the last tweaks to their design were made between '55 and '57 - and the Fender '57 Custom Deluxe is an unbelievably good reissue that does more than justice to its predecessors. There's nothing fancy about the '57 Custom Deluxe: volume and tone are all you need to elicit cleans that'll blow you away, and overdrive that you would swear was coming from a 60+ year old amplifier. This is the blues-rock gigging amp that you've been waiting for.

Man I love that sound! It’s amazing that such an old circuit design can get such a “modern” distortion sound. Reminds me of the vintage Valco/Supro amps that Jimmy Page used because of their natural saturation and compression.

A Helpful starter for those new to the frankly weird interaction of Tweed Deluxe Controls. I way prefer Telecasters and P90 guitars into these but every tone is a classic. I like most to run my 50s style Teles with a compressor + reverb + short delays and ride the volume on the guitar. Everything you play sounds A star.

I could say pretty much the same about the blackface era amps, too. I've built a couple a Tweeds and a Deluxe Reverb. They all sound better by just pushing the amp with boost, but mostly letting the Tubes do the OD. I like a Comp right after the guitar or tuner into an OD pedal that's set closer to boost. Then, I hit an actual clean boost into an EQ and a delay.

It was ahead of its time. So much so, in fact, that I heard it was recorded through a 57 deluxe IR into a macbook pro and then recorded as an mp3. Rumor has it that they took that file, burned it to a cd, and then to a casset and then to an 8-track and then to vinyl and transported back to its time. Leo had to do something, those tweed amps just weren’t selling any more.

Hi! Not sure of what you mean, are you asking if we use the instrument channel or the second input of the instrument channel? I have this amp and I would like to know how he is sitting that close to it lol. It is SO loud, like neighbors-calling-the-cops loud. Granted mine is a clone and is 15w (same as the originals) while this is a 12w, so maybe that makes a difference. I haven't been able to play any gigs with it because it overpowers the band. All of that being said, it has the warmest, fattest, most beautiful tone of any amp I've ever played. I do wonder if the 12w is more reasonable in volume.
@waltgracevintage8620
@waltgracevintage8620 Жыл бұрын
Hi! It really wasn’t all that loud in the room. Maybe those extra 3 watts really do make a difference. Also check what speaker you’re using. A lot of times high frequencies can be perceived as loud and unpleasant while a warmer sounding speaker can fix that.

While I greatly appreciate the effort you've put into this helpful instructional video, I'm afraid I have to take exception to something you've said here. Early-on, at the 45-50 second mark, you've said that this amp will . . . "get you overdrive at a low volume". You're JOKING, right??? If not, then you must have somehow secured a completely different '57 Custom Deluxe than mine, because mine won't breakup at ANY volume, with ANY guitar or pickup style, unless using an OD pedal, or unless its literally pegged (dimed!), and that requires an attenuator, because at that volume, this "tiny little" amp will blow the glass outta the freakin' windows! In fact, its one of the most frustrating, one-trick pony amps that I have ever personally encountered. Clearly however, your mileage has varied.
@waltgracevintage8620
@waltgracevintage8620 Жыл бұрын
Hey Joseph! Sorry to hear you're having trouble dialing your amp, we get it, it's not as intuitive as most other amps. The volume issue is relative, if you're playing with a band you'll find this amp is very quick to distort at the volume required to keep up with a drummer. However, if you're playing in a bedroom well... yeah, it makes sense that it's too loud for you. We suggest you get an attenuator, or anything that has a master volume, but if you bought the Tweed Deluxe with the purpose of cranking at home then you got the wrong amp buddy (maybe try a tweed champ?). But yes, considering the headroom of this amp compared to other popular Fender amps like the Twin, Deluxe Reverb, Hot Rod and Vibroluxes... etc. The tweed deluxe is one of the quietest and with the lowest amount of headroom. -- Still loud, but quiet relative to the volume of a live band.
@josephstewart5201
@josephstewart5201 Жыл бұрын
@@waltgracevintage8620 Wrong! Swing and a miss. I can "dial it in" just fine, partner, but again, it requires an attenuator for decent break-up at anywhere near tolerable room volumes, and THAT, is where you and others are being more than a bit misleading with all of this 'quietest' and 'bedroom level break-up' language. Its misleading, period! And I stand by that assertion. Sorry!
@waltgracevintage8620
@waltgracevintage8620 Жыл бұрын
Sorry if it seemed misleading, it sure wasn’t our intention. We see your point. Apologies. A good metric for volume is wattage, a lot of times you can get an idea of how loud an amp can be by looking at that. That way you can get a better idea whether the amp is suitable for bedroom playing or not. Thanks!
@josephstewart5201

@@waltgracevintage8620 Thank you, but no worries, and no apologies are necessary whatsoever. When he said "dime it out" i almost puked. F'n kids you just say 57' like it's no big deal.

Your description of how channels work is wrong, wrt how they filter different frequency (not about how they interact). The two channels differ only for the presence of a bright cap on the bright channel. Rob Robinette explains it well (google "rob robinette How Fender Normal/Bright/Hi/Low Input Jacks Work"). "Note that the only difference between the Normal and Bright channels is the Bright Cap and at max volume there is no difference between the Bright and Normal channels.". The difference between Hi/Low is only attenuation, no difference in filtering of frequencies. After the inputs, the signal goes through grid resistors of the same value for both inputs, and then to v1 tube. after that, signal from both inputs go through two coupling caps (one for each channel, *both of 0.1uF* value), which are responsible for low-frequency filtering. With it being the same value, the same filtering is happening for both channels. What folks do sometimes to remove the mud from distortion in a 5e3 is change the value of that coupling cap, for example with a value of 0.02uF like in the Champ -- I've done this one on the Bright channel -- or 0.0047 like in Marshals. Hope this helps.
