I'll test this in the context of a band mix soon so stay tuned for that. 😄 Check it out. 🎸 🛒 Sweetwater - sweetwater.sjv.io/zNzVLm 🛒 Thomann - bit.ly/3pHPFOW 🛒 Fender - bit.ly/3fZiRMF 🛒 Guitar Center - guitar-center.pxf.io/75XNj3 🛒 Sky Music - bit.ly/42UXIqp (affiliate links)

Hi Shane great review as usual. Yep I'm a Tone Master fan. I recently got the Tone Master Super Reverb, it sounds so good (and even better after a firmware update) and does everything I need for the stuff I play. As an older, 66, yet relatively new player (about 2 1/2 years at this point), I'll probably never get to hear a Tube Super Reverb, or afford one or be able to lift one, so the Tube vs Tone Master thing is a mute point for me. I did get the chance to play a '68 Custom Deluxe Reverb and a Tone Master Deluxe Reverb back to back at my local Music store, I could not pick one over the other sound wise. I was a bit surprised that Fender released the Princeton as the next Tone Master, I was hoping for a Super Sonic 60. Having said that this Princeton really does sound sweet, and like my Super Reverb, the attenuation and cab sim XLR gives all of these amps the versatility for a wide range of uses. Cheers Pete

I’ve never played one in person but I like the concept and they seem to sound good in videos. My only concern is I’ve seen some videos where I thought some pedals (especially fuzz) didn’t sound great. Curious your thoughts on that point.

Played this in my local shop, beside the tube version. I liked it, though the tube version felt bigger somehow. Anyway, at one point I had the Tonemaster Deluxe Reverb blonde, and liked it too. This Princeton is a cool amp for those Fender tones at a light weight, decent for those looking for the options it has.

I'm doing gigs with an Elvis backing band and wanted a Twin. The Tone Master sounds great, and sound engineers have told me many times that running direct out also sounds great. Love the look, sound and portability - just hope it lasts a long time!

I have the Tone master Super reverb and I am very happy with it. I like this idea better than a modeling amp that emulates everything else. I also like the way Fender designed these amps so the volume is up there with the original tube amps.

I drove 25 miles to my local Guitar Center on Sunset Blvd in Hollywood and picked up the Deluxe Tone Master. It doesn't disappoint at all! What I love about the Tone Master series is the real close emulation to the tube version at all levels. The light weight is the best feature to me it's so refreshing to carry it. As a "Boomer" like my children call me I'm not as strong as 35 years ago lugging those 64 pound Fender Twin Reverbs etc....plus the the attenuation helps so much to play at bedroom levels! Great series from fender. I knew you were going to like it! Thanks por the review!

Really good review. You hit all the important points. I've had them all and these Tonemasters are really good. Great for gigging musicians since they are lightweight and should not have the normal electronic issues with tube amps but also good at home with the attenuation, line out with emulations, and speaker off possibilities for recording.

The output power switch is an amazing feature that some amps have because most people practice in homes and apartments (like me), which helps keep the tone but ins a lower volume. I have a boss Katana 50 MK2 that has the same feature; all new amps should have it.

Good stuff Shane, I tried one of these in Tokyo earlier this year; killer tones! The sound of the reverb wasn't very convincing vs a true spring reverb to be honest, but it works if you want a reverb sound regardless. In the end, I managed to find a second-hand '65 Princeton Reverb Reissue with upgraded components and a beefier speaker that all together got me about 85% of the way towards an actual vintage 65 Princeton Reverb I tried in Portland, OR at Thunderroad Guitars. Sidebar: If you ever get your hands on their new silverface '68 Custom Vibro Champ, do it; you won't regret it!

Thanks for this Shane. It's nice to see that amp builders are considering the home recording users. The power attenuation is a great feature and the back panel controls for cab sim is very usable. My only gripe is the dirt tones. Maybe it's just me, but they feel a little ice picky and unnatural. If this is supposed to emulate a tube amp, I'm missing the warmth. If you're running effects before it and don't need the dirt in the amp then it's less of an issue, but often it's the over driven tones of an amp that often give it its character.

So many great things about this amp. Classic Princeton sound without the tubes, a built in attenuator (which i think should be a standard feature on all amps) and of course that classic tremolo. Also, did you keep the Charvel Shane? Personally i love Charvel guitars, people see them only as shred machines but the feel and sound of those guitars is great for everything.

I do like the sounds of the tonemaster series, but I still haven't bought one. I have Fender & Vox amps and would love to have a lighter amp. My lightest amp is a Vox AC15 which is around 45lbs. What keeps me from purchasing a tonemaster is that they are all digital and I worry years down the road what happens when the cpu components go out. I have a Pro Reverb over 40 years old that I still play through and can still work on or have worked on.

Been gigging a princeton TM recently, and what I find almost eerie is how it 'feels' like a valve amp. Infact, there are ways in which it is actually preferable to a real valve amp. It has the immediacy of a SS amp, but the compression sensation that comes with valves.

thanks Shane for the test and the great tones. I also tested the Princeton Reverb. First impression was great because of the power attenuation and the weight and the clean sounds are fantastic. But if you use overdrive-pedals in front of the amp the amp is completely overextended. In particular with a fuzz pedal (Big Muff) i get the feeling the amp was completely lost with the "information" from the pedal, so the opposite to the tube amp which get to blossom out. A great guitar combined with a tube amp could create a "kind of magic" which is hard to explain - in my opinion this "magic" doesn´t exist with the Tone Master Amps. For me the digital technology can´t reproduce the "organic-magic".

Glad to see you finally review this. I love my tube version, but given the conflict in the world it’s even harder to get tubes now. My attenuator is a bit of a pain to hook up given more wires… oh joy. So it’s between maintenance of a traditional amp or absolute ease of use and features hmmmm . I have played one. The only improvement I can see is filtering out the transients known to that circuit. And when its not mic'd and just the room it's very very thin. The Princeton was just a beginner's amp that found its way into the recording studios due to being so easy to tote around. KNOWING: That it would be mic'd and the final sound pro eq'd. The best small all around amp remains the Deluxe Reverb. And if you take a Blues Deluxe or Blues Jr and replace the Plexi Tone Stack (that Fender put in these to compete with Marshall) with Vintage Fender Tone Stacks.........They are just as good. And mod the bias as well. The Princeton Tone Master is just another new mouse trap. Now.......The 65 Princeton Reverb Limited Edition is a complete different story...And as a side note: No amplifier or guitar is going to make you sound like Sean !!!!! He is a Pro of Top Shelf Quality !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! It's his Soul and Hands you hear. Not the gear !!!

Not quite, the hybrid Super Champ XD or X2 (15W, 24lb) had multiple amp voicings and a much lower price tag. I have played the XD for four years, and it's just started to make some unexpected noises, so it may be time for some new tubes. Meanwhile I have switched over to a second spare XD that I snapped up a couple of years ago at a very good price. Hopefully I can cure the first amp with some new matched tubes that I have in stock.

I have the blonde version of the Deluxe Reverb Tone Master. IMO, the Princeton is not a different enough sound to have released it. The Princeton makes sense if we are talking about tube amps, but with the ability to attenuate the Deluxe Reverb, I don't see the need for both. Just my opinion. I have played the amp, and it sounds great.

The Achilles heal with Digital amps has always been, ...."What do they sound like cranked.?" "How do they respond when pushed."....If there is enough power and headroom on tap, they can be a beautiful thing in their own right. I have an old G-Dec 30 (Metal Series).....To this day that little 30 Watt monster holds up beautifully. Cheers!

Question, it seems like you can run the xlr to FOH for live situations and still have the 10inch speaking on to monitor yourself, is that correct? Any other amps out there do something similar? Most times going xlr to a PA disengages the speaker, i thought.

Great Demo, Shane! I have a Fender Mustang GTX 100. Does anyone out there have any insight as to how this Tone Master’s modeling compares the Princeton Reverb model in the Mustang GTX 100? Should I even consider buying the Tone Master? Thanks! ❤️🙏🏻🕊🎸

No matter how accurate the Tone Masters are to the real deal, in a studio or for home jams, they sound absolutely fantastic.. And i a mix, for anyone creating actual music, they're simply perfect.

I wonder how the modeling sound on Fender Mustang 3 v2 stacks up against the same modeling sound of a Tone Master??? The same, similar, or not even close. I have a Mustang 3 and all your downloads.

you'll see a lot more of this going forward. Big fat transformers & rectifiers are outdated, especially when you consider tube amp sounds are possible via a PC plugged into a decent set of speakers.

I'm 70 and I just can't get my head into non-valve amps, I just love the sound of an amp when the valves get nice and hot. Am I just old fashioned or do the new digital amps replicate that tone that we all love so much. I'm getting too old to drag these valve amps around so please someone convince me that I'm just being stuck in the past.

Tone Masters vs Tube (small-sized combos) - 1. ‘65 Deluxe Reissue 2. ‘68 Princeton w/ Greenback 3. ‘65 Princeton Tone Master 4. ‘68 Deluxe Reissue 5. ‘65 Deluxe Tone Master In the Tone Master series, the smaller amps respond better in the low end. I was surprised by the Princeton Reverb. It sounded great on 6-7 volume and had XLR outputs to compensate for its lower wattage. HUGE upgrade from the Twin and Deluxe TMs imo. At the price, tho, it’s not replacing my SuperSonic 22 Live (or a Blues Jr IV Tweed) and it’d be tough to justify over a used SuperChamp X2 for home use…tho, it IS sexy in all black.

Sounds pretty good, i think its would have to be side by side with the tubed version to hear its short comings. Fender made some digital amps back in the early 1980s that sound very much the same, They sell for about $200usd.

So what makes this different from all the other Fender digital recreations or the classic amp tones?
@flyingrat492

Primarily the amount of processing power that goes into the modeling, however at a certain point tone is almost entirely in the eyes, this amp mostly exists for people that want a Princeton look

It sounds great and very useful features for home use/recording. BUT it’s nearly €1000 which is ridiculous for a small solid state amp with ho fx loop, no headphone out and one channel. I’ll stick with my Katana mk2. If it had been around €300 I might have been interested.

@@intheblues I must have missed that one. I'll check it out. I was surprised to see it in your hands being a more bluesy guy. It's very suited to a metal/shredder guy like me. If you like that guitar, you should check out the Charvel ProMod Tele with the ash body, Gotoh 510 bridge, and Fishman Fluence Classic humbuckers. They have three voicings. PAF, slightly overwound PAF, and single coil. I'm not a fan of their Modern line, but the Classics are outstanding. I think you'd really dig that guitar. It's got the same great neck with the compound radius and it's a Tele! ☺

While it is a pretty close representation, I would still opt to pay the extra 400 bucks and buy the 65 tweed edition with the 12" Canabis Rex speaker and go old school.
