I've been a gigging musician since the mid 80s. I've been a tube guy all my life. When the super reverb tone master came out with the 4x10s at 36lbs, I had to have it! So I bought mine a year ago this past September, so I've had it now for 14 months. Mine uses a 200 watt power amp to simulate the power of a 45 watt super. I've played smaller club gigs with it set at 22 watts, and larger stages at 45 watts. It is an absolute killer amp. I have a blues junior, a tweed blues deluxe, and they sit in the studio now. I take the super everywhere I go. It's light reliable, works insanely good, sounds killer and responds like a real tube amp. When you crank it up, and those 4x10s start moving air, it's a great experience. Great amplifiers!

What kind of music do you play when you gig with it? Just curious. I'm almost sold on getting one, and put it this way, I'm chasing a SRV Strat tone type of thing. Just curious how it'll do

@@SixStringSlinger1 I've been a huge Stevie fan since I was 15 years old in 1985 and they broadcasted the Elmocombo video on TV. However, where I live in small town Canada in the 80s and 90s it was all country. So I learned to chicken pick and toured. Did all the hoopla. Now I'm a houseband guy in the summer where we play everything from country to classic rock. I also have a blues band called Tightrope, where we do a lot of SRV and Hendrix, and I'm also in a steady band on weekends where we play everything from America to George Jones. We play a couple SRV tunes in that band as well. This amp kills it for pretty much everything!

@@dannymacnevin3939 awesome! Love that name Tightrope! I play in a band now (no name yet) and we play blues and rock with some occasional country.. I'm just influenced by SRV a lot and I chase his strat tone. I don't try to copy him necessarily, but rather I take my inspiration from him while doing my own thing. Oh, if you've never heard of Matthew Scott here on YT you should check him out. He has a song called "Where You Been" and it's amazing! He's suppose to have his first album soon. Reminds me of SRV and Rory Gallagher combined

Nice thoughtful review as always Dylan. I'm too old and have owned many a Fender tube amp including blackfaces back in the late 70s and 80s when they weren't considered classics, just old! Anyway, I have always preferred tube amps, but also have owned and enjoyed Fractal, Helix, Quilters, etc. All flavors. I bought the original TM Deluxe (black), did not care for it and returned it. However, I think fender has really perfected it with this TM Princeton which I've had now for about a week. It sounds and feels fabulous - astoundingly good. One thing you didn't mention is that the TM Princeton has an actual ceramic speaker, not a neo. I've had trouble bonding with neo speakers in the past - perhaps too impatient to wait to fully break them in - but this amp is smooth and sweet right out of the box. Anyway, thanks for the great review.

I've been thinkin of getting a low watt tube amp for home use as I don't gig, but researching them I didn't realize their need for servicing or maintinance. At my age and not knowing any amp techs in my area these Tone Masters looked like a great option! I was lookin at the deluxe, I didn't know the Princeton was coming out!! This was very helpful! Thanks!! The tube pureist will never like the digital options!! Keep up the great work!!!

What an fantastic video! I agree with your thoughts on these amps and modeling amps. It's not one against the other, it just comes down to what you like doing or your needs. For me I just want to plug in and play and only care about 2 or 3 different sounds, so these would fit the bill. Again, really enjoyed this video and the way you discussed the topics!

Nice job, Dylan. You make a great point about typical "Modeling Amp" features and selections compared to the Tone Master's more straight ahead "Plug and Play" approach. I'm in your camp on that. I also appreciate that you touched on the Tone Master's ability to take pedals. To me, that would be what seals the deal! The Tone Master seems to bridge the divide between digital and analog.

I own the blonde version of the Deluxe Tonemaster. I have said for ages that the conversation needs to change. We spend too much time asking if it’s exactly like it’s tube counterpart, rather than asking is it a great amp in its own right. The answer is absolutely, it’s a great amp. I’ve owned the tube versions of the deluxe reverb and I far more enjoy the tones and control I can get out of this thing up than any of those. I’m really intrigued by the Princeton version and will probably look into that in the future. Hopefully they will offer it with the Celestion at some point? Thanks for a great review.

I bought a Deluxe Reverb Tonemaster a few months ago, and it's my favorite amp I've ever owned. I had a Twin in the 70s, and a Deluxe reissue a few years ago, but this thing is just superb. It has great tone with plenty of Fender-ish spank and is ridiculously light. If I were still gigging a lot, I would own a Twin, Deluxe, and Princeton. My only reservation is that very few shops can work on the micro-circuits. Some can diagnose at the board level and replace the offending board, but very few can repair a problem on a board.

I got the tone master deluxe reverb blonde ages ago and it is fantastic. I know there are concerns about failure, how hard will it be to fix etc. but I just play at home, and it never goes anywhere, so I’m just going to drive it like I stole it, and I love the hell out of it. Fantastic sound, and it’s all I need. The Princeton looks fantastic. If it had come out before the deluxe reverb, I probably would have bought it happily.

I love the epic intro with the chord progression you always jam on all reverby and imposing. Also, i wanna clarify: "tremolo" is a (sufficiently) accurate term for the effect, derived from a violin technique where you flutter the bow in a light and quick manner on the string (like tremolo picking) Vibrato is the wiggly thing you do with your fretting hand, and that's what a whammy bar does. Who knows why this came to be called "tremolo" in the whammy bar context, that's simply wrong (or, it used to be lol) So tremolo pertains to rhythm/dynamics and vibrato pertains to pitch, if we're being as technical as possible

I got mine yesterday, and I have zero disappointments. It works well with pedals. It gives me all the volume I would ever need. Single coils and humbuckers sound wonderful, and I don't need to worry about tubes going wonky. The XLR output was a big sell feature for me as well, so my stage level can be sane to pacify grumpy vocalists. 🤣 Makes me feel like I did as a 14 year old in 1968 getting a brand new Princeton Reverb for Christmas.

Hello Dylan. I agree with everything you say. I bought the blonde version and it is brilliant in a small club or bar. I took it to a club I have played in many tine but with my Fender hot tod deluxe. The room was just too large for a 12 watt amp. And that is obviously what I should have expected. No one in there right minds would play a 12cwatt amp in medium sized room other than DI it to front of house, nearly all recordings in Nashvile anyway were done with the Deluxe Reverb. I didn't Di it, so it distorted. And I play country music and like a clean sound, and I have two different dirt boxes on my board. So that I can dirty it to test when required. Lovely amp but in a med sized room it needs a bit of help. Great video Dykan thank you.

@@angusorvid8840 I am pretty sure their construction is SMD. Also the use of lead free solder makes a bad combo. More than solid state they are purely digital and run on CPU and DSP circuits. Fender has a history of very much abandoning their digital lines which are now bricks. Also I don't see the use for a Princeton in this line being that the tube version isn't too heavy to begin with.

Hi Dylan ! Nice review with great sounds too. Haven’t had a chance to try one out (not yet available here). What’s keeping me from (pre)ordering one is the price, back up (parts) when this series becomes EOL. (It’s a lot of money if it breaks down and can not be repaired…) I like the idea of having no software, tons of amp middels etc. I feel that’s distracting me from playing, BUT I would appreciate a tweakability option (Tone, Bias options, select 70’s Princeton etc.) Hang it on the computer. Set it once to your liking and forget about it, and use just the knobs like a real amp… I have a Boss Nextone that does all that, though it’s not digital signal processing. The Nextone may sound less good ?? (Is definately less cool) but is less than half the price 😁

Say what you will, this is where digital modeling can really shine. I have a Mustang III I really like. I don’t need 99 presets, I only use 4 and only one of those most of the time. Dedicating ALL of the processing power to make it sound like one or two channels of a single model of amp is much more user friendly, and the attenuator is definitely a difference maker for me. I really hope they further expand the Tone Master line with Champ and Tweed models.

A guy writes on every single videos that Supros are crap, that he keeps servicing them since he seems to be a repairman.. I tried to search "Supro reliability" on the Web, I found nothing and no one complaining about problems or whatsoever.. Absolutely correct. A PCB board is quite reliable unless you start adding hot tubes, which is what most tube amps are made like these days; hot tubes and PCB boards in a box. Nobody seems to worry about it, they just get them repaired and/or move on. I mean, people buy all kinds of pedals, digital IR devices (Stomps, Helix, Iridium etc) and don’t seem to wonder about reliability…lol

Nothing sounds like Fender clean and with these two amps plus a pedal board I can get all the sounds I need and no longer lug unbelievably heavy stuff around. There will always be purists who want tubes but that market is getting smaller and when the big acts start endorsing solid state they will become fewer and fewer

I like the option of running an XLR out to a 12" powered speaker if you need more volume. That can be used with or without the internal 10" speaker. That gives you 3 options, especially if you don't have an accesible sound system.

Ya get to a certain age and the weight does get to be a real issue. Something to consider. I know a lot more about this amp than before I watched it. Thanks for the video. I would buy one of these used if I needed an amp without much concern. I would use it as a pedal platform mostly although there would be times when i used it as a conventional amp turned up loud. It would work just fine I think. If you are a tube purist then use tubes. If not then there are a lot of options. Maybe solid state for bedroom/practice and tubes for louder playing. Lots of options. Bye for now.

Spot on with the "it's an amp!" an 99% of people play profilers with one or two favourite settings. Plus, and so few reviewers ever talk about this, in a LIVE setting, this thing will ROCK! I would hate to have to navigate a Kemper in a pub gig setting - and as most of my playing is gigging in pubs and functions, I'll take this all day long.......if I was a Fender guy. What I REALLY want is for Vox to do a range of these 😎😎😎

It's really easy to hook up you're headphones to an tonemaster amp , buy an berhringer P1 ( wich i did for my tm dr ) or buy an xrl cable that converts to you're headphone jack ( wich is an other solution i have seen in many comments people tend to do ) .

I play at home, Ive owned tube Princetons, and this amp feels like a tube amp. Not sterile like a cheap solid state amp. The advantage is that you don’t have to worry about tube issues, like I did with my tube princetons. It’s good enough for me.

Yyyeeeaahh-up. I play ‘an amp’; a Laney Cub. I have a two notes torpedo to get a DI cab sim sound by piggybacking out the send. This sort of amp is something I would consider. Screw mucking about with a million options … I already have a DAW and plug-ins if I want to screw about with unlimited options.

I guess nowadays with so many options there's something for everybody. What I mean with that is that if you're a session player, if you have a recording studio, if you tour a lot, if you NEED a tube-amp tone but you're affraid to take your expensive and heavy amp with you, there will always be an accessible, maybe affortable option for you.

For anyone who wants the thrill of plugging straight into a fender amp & cranking it, Tone Master amps are “IT”. You can do that at just about any volume. If you are a pedal board type player, you might get a little frustrated with these amps. They don’t always play well with pedals. Especially when you are pushing them into breakup. My other suggestion...If you ever plan on taking these amps out to rehearsals or gigs, get the Twin or the Super. Why? Because you can crank those amps loud & clean to avoid any problems you might have with your pedals. The Deluxe & Princeton are great “@ home only” amps. You can do a lot with them in the recording or home environment but, they are going to lose their versatility as soon as you begin to crank them. They don’t take pedals well. That said, I have the Twin & it’s my everyday/everything amp. I love it. 7 is Stray Cats & 10 is Sex Pistols. A little bit of Verb, maybe some Vibrato & I’m sitting in front of a twin reverb at any appropriate volume. Great amp! & so useful in today’s world.

I bought a new Fender Champion 100 last year, mainly because it had different Fender models on the Drive channel (and it was on sale, so it was a no brainer). To be honest, the Princeton voices are the ones I dig the most, I don't know how the sound compares to the actual ToneMaster but if I ever go for one I'm definitely getting a Princeton.

@JuanJaim
@JuanJaim Жыл бұрын
@@ronmorey3475 It's a good practice amp that can also get very loud (like stage loud). I use it mostly at bedroom level, volume at 2-3 is loud enough for me for day practice. There's a headphone output jack for quiet practice. What I also do is I plug in a volume pedal in the FX loop so I can crank it and get good OD tones at bedroom/house level. There's a Champion 40 as well, I believe it's 1x12 (the 100 is 2x12).

I have both the champion 100 and the twin,I'm by no means a professional but I play and get paid. I can set both to play side by side with very little difference,I got the twin for the speaker layout,the champion is a really handy amp and have had the chance to sit in the audience and listen as another player, completely different style/ sound etc played through it, absolutely worth the money. Also very capable, although slightly overkill,home practice all the way to live performance

I wish to get a better understanding of how well the Tonemasters simulate tube clipping and whether it is possible to play "at the edge of breakup" and use your volume knob and/or attack to control the level of distortion. Also, I really hope they come out with an amp head ... Bassman perhaps?
@skulltula2159
@skulltula2159 Жыл бұрын
From owning a Deluxe Reverb - simulates great. I set for edge of break up at vol 7ish on guitar when using average attack. Dig in or roll up volume and it behaves as expect. Only criticism really is the lowest attenuator setting is a bit unrealistic. Combo of not driving the speaker and temptation to play harder because it’s quiet. Second setting is great for home though. 85 - 90db in front of it

Gotta jump on this bandwagon. The fender tone master is super versatile. I think its got something to do with the Jensen Neodymium speakers. Im a Marshall / Mesa guy. They have this amp at a studio I go to. I was like wtf at first. Threw a high gain pedal in front and its super nasty, in a very good way !!! Not at all what I expected. Super simple controls too, same classic look, you can also select the wattage output on the back. And of course, its like 18 lbs. These sound awesome. Pretty Damn Loud too. Puts out sound like a 30 watt amp at least. Voicing is trebly, bitey, and also has got some low mid thump to it as well. Its definitely got its own thing going on. This amp is actually capable of breathing fire on the level of a hot rodded jcm 800 - 900 with a pedal. No hum, dead fn quiet. So with the distortion pedal, will definitely cut through the bass and drums.

I love the concept of the Tonemaster series. (Although it seems like an effects loop and headphone jack couldn’t hurt.) But they came along about the time that I decided I don’t want a traditional guitar amp. I’d rather have a separate amp sim in pedal or floor unit form, and when I need to move air I’ll plug it into a powered cab, PA, etc. (Well…OK…I do have a JC-40, but I mostly use it as a powered stereo cab.) I keep my Princeton around only for nostalgia and to have an actual tube amp (in case I someday actually figure out what all the fuss is about tubes).
