Keep the combo, it will be great for recording and won't do your back in. I stuck 2 strips of 1x2 " wooden strips to the base of the Champ combo to protect the base and to help transmit bass through any wooden flooring( likecon some British made cabs). The new speaker is essential, a low wattage Alnico will make it sound closer to a Princeton rev. Swap the 12ax7vfor a 12at7 as it makes you turn up the master volume making the 6V6s work a bit harder and the sound becomes much more warm and the valve sound is much more prononounced. Small combos are very sought after at the moment that's why every brand has a "new" 5/10/15 watt amp design available and most if the expensive ones are very similar to this Champ in layout ( 2x6v6s ax7s ) but include much better speakers ( alnico 10" or Eminence GA-10 sc64) which makes the difference between a practice amp or a general purpose combo, for what they cost you would nut's not to have one( even for a spare).

Try playing both amps in stereo. Upgrade the 12 inch speaker to a greenback variant... I would keep the combo and sell the head, you can connect the combo to any 8 ohm cab. Cheers
