** The day was going pretty well though being quite cold outside, and we did get the 724 started with the help of a "working" Wabasto and warming up the batteries.
Things quickly went south though once the def issues started to show their ugly faces 😆🤷‍♂️
There most definitely needs to be a "dealer" override to allow the equipment to work without def until they arrive with the parts to fix it!

I was on a engine and exhaustsystem Training where we had to check on the def system of an fendt 724 and got told the def freezes at around -10°c so to keep the def pump and injector save a valve would change the flow of the def and the injector would open to get all the def out of the def lines and pump after shutting of the tractor . So if the def was then frozen in the tank there is an heating module right next to the intake in the tank wich would be melting the def ice if you started the tractor. After ten minutes of heating the def the pump would turn on to feed the def injector. Sadly because corona i wasn't allowed to play around with the def system but if i remember correctly the def heater should be running the engine coolant so it might have been okay with the warmth of the webasco but then when it was idling it could have cooled of to much so the def froze again. That's what I suspect being the error but at the deere dealership i work at we haven't had a def issue since im working there so i don't know to much about def systems Fixing the issue of refreezeing def should be engine grill covers so the fan won't suck in to much cold air wich would allow the tractor to warm up propperly

I had a jcb that didn't like cold morning starting. Then I fitted a geared starter and it never fails. The gearing gives it far more torque. They should leave the batteries that you can remove them in a couple off minutes max. Therefore you can take them home with you in the evening to keep them warm.

I've said it before, if the manufacturer and dealer say it should work in those conditions tell them to come out when the tractor is cold not just started 2 hours before and try it. Tell them if they can't start it in 20 mins without extra tools (block heater power allowed) to load it on a lowboy and give you your money back since it isn't working clearly. Maybe even lemon laws to cover it if it's noew enough?

Hi Mike, next time you have trouble starting the 724, can you try connecting the jumper cables directly to the starter motor. if that helps then you have a problem with the wiring from the battery to the starter. the engine oil doesn't get warm enough at idle at these temperatures. it helps to put a piece of cardboard in front of the radiator so that no air can get through. like the truckers do on their semi trucks or people with their diesel trucks. and if you want to do it right you would have to wrap the engine and put some fiberglass wool on the bottom of the oil pan (that doesn't start to burn quickly) so that the heat stays in the engine. yes that sucks but honestly I would do that because it is better for the engine and you don't have to spend 3 hours starting the tractor. and to bring the hydraulic oil quickly to temperature, you can make a valve between hydraulic hoses that you just plug into a SCV and close the valve a little. until you hear the oil rush. then you get very quickly temperature in the Hy oil. I'm in british columbia right now where it doesn't get cold enough otherwise I would start the 724 that is here. the 514 is at -15C° plugged in overnight just started as if there were nothing. unfortunately I have not tried at the time the 724. and it is very unlikely to be so cold again here. sorry for my English, German is my native language. PS: we don't have problems with the DEF system on our 2 724's here because the tractors are pretty busy and DEF systems need temperature to work properly. if the tractor doesn't have to work hard enough then it doesn't get warm enough and the problems start. Yes the cold also plays a role, DEF starts to freeze at -11C°.

i'm a fendt mechanic in germany, i think if you start working and driving the tractor immediately after starting it, there's a greater chance that all the oils and the cooling water will heat up and then the def tank will also thaw and you won't get an error message

Mike, make your own battery cables out of welding cable, much better than commercial cables. You can also set up your pickup with a forklift electrical plug, you hook it directly to your battery with a foot or so of the welding cable and you have the other plug on one end of your jumper cables going to the tractor. Quick and easy hookup that way.

I feel for you when dealing with cold start issues. I would seriously recommend you pay Princess Auto a visit and pick up a canvas tarp so you can wrap the engine area and place a tiger torch inside a piece of heavy wall steel pipe with a 90 Degree bend on the end and in a very short period of time the engine block will be toasty warm and the equipment will start very easily. Only need propane thus don't have to worry whether generator will start.

Lots of the DEF issues I've run across are caused by operating the tractors like this. With DEF systems you have to get in them and start operating it easy to warm it up rather than firing it up and going for lunch like on a pre emission tractor. With no load in cold temperatures the engine doesn't create enough heat to thaw the DEF tank out in the alloted time causing it to error out.

if your starter is accessible, you can put a jumper right to the starter. That helps if your starter cable is too small, which I think might be an issue.

Don't let these new emissions tractors idle very long or they will give problems. If you leave them for more than 5 minutes Rev it up to 13-1400. Keeps the engine warm and oil pressure up.

Mike, I struggle at times in cold temps with batteries in Nebraska, USA let alone what you deal with. I'm surprised you have the luck you do.

So your opinion, never did any tests is more accurate than the NE tractor tests? Their data doesn’t show that but good talking point for disgruntled people.

Nope your correct, frustration not based on fact. Ironic part I live 15 minutes from the Nebraska test lab.
