Yes! That's what I was looking for! Hell yes, son. For those (in a civilised part of the world - just kidding haha) who use Celsius 100F is around 38C.

Thanks for the inspiration to do this. I bet the smell is amazing when it is in the kiln. I am aiming to grow some burley and make some kind of blend like that with some other tobaccos to replicate a couple of my favourite pipe tobaccos. Thanks for sharing your knowledge and giving me some pointers .

48.5C isn't 100F. It is generally kept between 48C and 49C. Good kiln anyway.

I just slightly spray it with water and thenwrap in plastic so it dorsnt dry. I make like a flat thick panckakes wrapped in plastic. Then I use a foam plastic box about 50 liters with a lid and a 15W bulb which keeps the temperature in the box around 40 celsius. Then I stick the "panckakes" around the box walls. And keep it there for 4 weeks. Time by time checking if its not too wet or doesnt smell too bad (sour) then I take it out and cut in very thin slices like cigaret tabaccoo and dry for about 10 days.

Hi Martin, your fermenting box idea sounds like awesome and simple, thanks for sharing. Do you cut and hang whole plants or thread the leaves onto wire to dry out first? What state are the leaves in when you create your 'pancakes'? I'm totally new to this but like where you're coming from and would really appreciate some advice. Thanks for your attention :)

No. I cut the healthy large leaves and then impale them on a thin metal wire trough the thickest part of central stem. Space them at least inch between then hung the wires in well ventilated room. I do it in attic or firewood storage. Dry them 3-4 weeks til it gets brown. Then cut out central stem from each leave and green and yellow parts. Leave only the brown leaves without stems. Then put them on top of each other like book pages and press together. Then wrap in food plastic wrap and put in a foam box with bulb which keeps temperature 40-45 celsius. Choose the right size of the foam box and right Wattage bulb. Before putting them in the box check if the bulb keeps the right temperature. I did use 15 W halogen bulb on a 50 liter box.

I kept it in the box for 6 weeks and did check it every few days. If the tabaccoo will be to wet it will rot. Better make it slightly wet and keep longer. If its too dry it wont rot. Rotting is when it gets too dark and turns into mush. Then its ruined. Controlling the humidity is essential

A thousand thank yous for producing and uploading this entertaining and informative short videoclip Gizzy Greenfingers. Please, please, please do me a favour will you Gizzy. I have been struggling to fight depression for a long time now. I seem to have a cycle, part of which sees me 'getting worse', withdrawing from the world and it's only when I reach rock bottom that I reach out to tell people about what's going on. I feel I'm near that rock bottom now and would be touched if you'd spare me a thought, especially if you'd think of me around 4pm Monday as there's a support group in Dewsbury at 7pm but my sleep pattern is a mess and I really don't have much energy to do things. Thank you, Michael

Evening Michael I'm really sorry to hear you're going through a ruff patch at the moment, I do know how you're feeling as I too have suffered from depression for many years, I was on Prozac, not sure if your on medication? The thing is to keep your mind busy and find activities to do, this time of year always gets me down as the nights draw in and it gets colder, as I work outside it's quite bad especially if it's a wet winter. I hope your 4 o clock appointment went well today, it's always better to talk to someone about it than bottling it all up inside, hope you have some on face to face you can confide with Michael, kind regards guy.

Gizzy Green fingers Morning Gizzy, sorry to hear you contend with the dark clouds too. I've been battling this for 32 years now, since I was 13. Some people say I will always fight depression but I do get optimistic, feel I have issues to resolve and that, one day, I'll 'get there'. I tried medication during my mid twenties but always reacted badly to it. I was talking about you with my tobacconist last Thursday, explaining your films. I did not go to the support group last night, I did not think that they were my kind of people. You have to choose who you confide with carefully eh. There is a group tonight in Manchester which I'm much more positive about. Hopefully soon I can get some energy back Gizzy and do some gardening. There are some black mulberry trees near here, I've been told it's the time of year to take cuttings from them and I'd like to do so. Then sweep some leaves up to make compost for tobacco plants next year maybe. Sounds a bit pathetic I know but I'm struggling with energy. Best wishes, Michael

@@harryrarmer hope you get to read this. I too struggle with depression and sadly lost my older brother because of it and Im 56 yrs old and have been fighting it my whole life and I have to force myself to do even the most simple tasks at times. I know it can be tough but try to do things that your interested in and always Stay busy ! When our minds are busy about things we like or care about , interested in, then we've used that time in a positive way and get satisfaction from. By doing so, it leads to tomorrow's plans and so on. I don't want to sound like an idiot but I care and that's great that you reach out for help. For years I could not even talk about myself because I didn't want to bother anyone because I was afraid to. But there are people who can relate as its a common disorder. I wish you well !

Ron77A Evening Ron, thank you so much for your reply. I am sorry to read that you have to deal with depression but am pleased to sense that you are positive about matters. You write that you are 56, I will be 46 in May. Sometimes I wonder if I am going through a mid life crisis, maybe the male menopause! I often find missing sitting and thinking why I feel "it's all over for me," and that notion has taken me to some very dark places and to do some stupid things. You are right Ron, I should tackle the sleep issues I have, make efforts to get out of bed earlier and go out to find people to talk with! Please wish me luck with this matter. I'm really struggling to get up and get out because of the paralysing effects of medication I've started taking since I wrote my original message. Best wishes, Michael

If a leave dry out can it be rehydrated to continue the process or is it all lost from there?
@gizzygreenfingers
@gizzygreenfingers 3 жыл бұрын
Yes just mist the leaves with water and they will become plyable and won't turn to dust, you do need to constantly check for mold as if you don't catch it in time it will ruin your whole crop, also you need to keep the temperature at a constant level in the fermenter. Kind regards gizzy

Does the tobacco need to hang completely dry before you ferment, or does it only need to turn yellow before you ferment?
@gizzygreenfingers
@gizzygreenfingers 3 жыл бұрын
No not completely dry, you want some playability in the leaves or they will just turn to dust when you move them for the next stage. What I did is put a bucket of water in with the leaves as they cured so that way they don't dry out to fast, hope this helps, gizzy

@@gizzygreenfingers yea i grew some and have a problem with them molding while hanging outside, but at the same time they dry to a crisp. I did a new batch and let them turn yellow before putting them in a small oven outside. They are payable, but the stem is still far from dry. (Still whiteish yellow) when is the best time to store it in an air tight container?
@gizzygreenfingers
@gizzygreenfingers 3 жыл бұрын
You don't want to much moisture in the stems if storing as there just go mouldy and you're lose your crop, I didn't get everything perfectly when I was doing it but you need to experiment and Google questions as that's what I did and your pick up tips as you search :)
