What’s faster in a drag race… a Ferrari 488 Pista or a Vauxhall Corsa... with two engines?
Note: The Moose test was not to official spec, meaning the speeds are higher than official results.
This Ferrari 488 Pista is a £350,000 beauty - one of the best supercars on the market. but, can it beat a Vauxhall Corsa - originally bought for £300 - in a standing quarter-mile drag race?
We run these two cars through four challenges: a standing quarter-mile drag race, a rolling quarter-mile, 0-100-0mph acceleration and brake test and finally, our favourite, the Moose Test.
This Vauxhall Corsa has 1,200 horsepower and 1,300-newton metres of torque. This comes from two, yes two, 2 litre 16v turbo engines. One in the front and one in the back. It has an H pattern 6-speed gearbox and weighs 1250kg. Adam bought the Corsa for 300 quid, but has spent £50,000 on it over the last ten years.
This Ferrari 488 Pista has 710 horsepower and 770 newton-metres of torque. It only has one engine, which is a 3.9 litre twin-turbo V8. It has a 7-speed, dual-clutch paddle-shift gearbox and weighs 1280 kg. With all the bells and whistles, this 488 Pista costs £350,000.

@@jacobl6714 Don't forget about the 300k pounds difference in price. That corsa is built purely for racing, not confort, and for that price (55k pounds) it does a hell of a job. Still, if you don't want just racing, then the Ferrari would be the better choice (if you have the money).

@@gicady oh, of course, I mean yes it's ridiculously expensive lol and I'll never be able to afford one. And you're correct, they are built for different purposes. Just meant that people often say "ohhh, this vehicle goes faster than x y or z supercar, therefore it's better, #builtnotbought" lol I like both though, one's a work of art the other is just a spectacle of impressive homemade engineering. i believe each engine is mounted to the usual fwd box and associated driveshafts - so trans wise it ain't too tricky, the linkage would present a challenge though.

I recently I sold a corsa just like that, with a heavy heart, due to space constraints. A few months later I found the car again in a parking lot, driven by the guy who bought it from the guy I sold it to. We're friends now, bonding over this car. If I had an opportunity I'd buy it back from him and give it the attention it deserves. It gave me a driving pleasure that few modern cars can.

Think I've seen that Corsa at Santa Pod wicked car, thing with it is that it might have 1200hp total it's still two 600hp to the wheels front and back I remember the same day I saw the Corsa there was a c20let nova with a F28 gearbox and 4WD 500-600hp can't recall but the car was definitely faster. Tho if we don't do ridiculous things we don't have fun just look at the twin 800hp vr6 lupo in Germany things terrifying.

Great video. I can't imagine how difficult that Corsa is to control. My m140i with 455bhp going to the rear wheels, is wild and all over the road half the time, that Corsa must be crazy.

It is 4wd which would normally make a huge difference... but the front and rear are probably not linked by a propshaft to share the grip which would give it the stability and traction it really needs.

@@paulhope3401 Well, that is exactly what I meant, but I thought if I got too technical about things, the typical KZfaq commenter wouldn't really 'get it'. You sir, obviously know a lot more than the typical commenter ! Agreed if it had an AWD system with a complicated eco controlling things it would be a easier to drive. But it seems to simply have a front engine powering the front wheels and a rear powering the rear, maybe with a simple system to ensure as equal amounts of throttle to each as possible.

@@DjNikGnashers Thanks, yes.. I am an Engineer and bit of a petrolhead. Without a mechanical linkage to the front and rear axles it doesnt really matter how equal the throttle percentages are... with big boost as soon as wheelspin occurs the revs will shoot off to the redline independently and you end up with a differential of speed between the front and rear drive axles which will make it very unstable. Even just traction control (such as racelogics) on both powertrains would help tame it a lot and would be very tunable but I doubt he is minded that way.

As a owner of 300 hp 950kg Fiat Punto, I know that tractions is where it's at. I managed to burn the standard tires in 10 seconds the first time I tested launching the car. Didn't move much but the wheels spinned like hell. Got some better tyres and now it launches like it should. Thinking about going to an autoban to beat some BMWs. My Fiar is 100% street legal, as it isn't that ridicilous.
