Throttle House

Күн бұрын

The 1995 Ferrari F355 and Paul Rudd have one thing in common. They both age like a fine wine. Naturally aspirated, rear-wheel drive, manual transmission and a mid-engined V8. This car exists at the crossroads of modern and classic. But where does that leave it compared to the modern day? And for the prices people are now asking for these, does it still have a place in this digital world? Thomas and James spend some time deliberating over it, while giving it a little push on some backroads. We hope you enjoy the episode. And then subscribe, silly.
Huge thank you to @eclectionauto for letting us borrow their F355. It will be on Bring A Trailer soon!

My brother owned one just like this one. 1995 (build date Nov. '94) model, Berlinetta, red over black, six-speed gated manual, the euro-spec clear front blinker lenses, no Challenge grill in the back like some people do, etc. But he had a full Tubi exhaust, which this one doesn't sound like it has. He had the buttons/switches and dash vents redone to get rid of whatever the OEM sticky finish was. You guys have done an EXCELLENT job describing the driving experience. Spot on.

I have a 348TS with a Tubi exhaust and it’s the best driving (deafening) experience of all time. Can’t believe I own it honestly. The 348 steering is heavy until you’re moving, and then has that typical Ferrari lightness with lovely feel. It also smells incredible, transports me back to being in a workshop with my dad every time I sit in it. Honestly these things are magic, delicate, dramatic, small, complete timewarp. Wouldnt swap it for anything

I had just bought a brand new Toyota RAV4 for the same price in August, and was like, "I could have bought my dream car instead!" I'd still take a 355 GTS over any currently made exotic sports car. That 5 valve per cylinder v8 + proper manual gearbox = bliss! Loved seeing you guys drive this all over my usual cruising roads... a glimpse at an alternate timeline that could have been. 😁🥰

If you want to avoid the engine out for MOST things, get a 360. If you want to avoid it altogether, get a 430. I went with the 430 not just because it was the Ferrari V8 that came out when I got my license so it was a “poster car” for me, but also because you can pretty easily work on it yourself… which saves you a metric fuckton of money. You can also do a manual swap yourself for $10k if you want a gated manual without paying the premium for the stock ones. But a lot of the feeling of the 355 is still present in the 430… the interior is “far away” and spacious, it all feels light and delicate, it “dances” on the road… If you don’t mind the engine out maintenance, go for the 355. If you want things slightly more modern and reliable, 360. And even more so? 430.

I absolutely agree with you regarding the 430. I have one. An 07 F1 Spider. Modern enough, but still organic. I didn’t want a 458 because it is overly computerized, almost feeling like an arcade game, and the 355, although stunning, is a maintenance nightmare. Also, the interior is lacking, comparatively speaking. The 430 , for me, really hits the sweet spot. Two issues to contend with; 1) I live on Vancouver Island, and there are no certified Ferrari technicians. 2) my 430 is dark grey in colour, so not too flashy, however, some people look at me in a negative light. Conversely, I also have a Porsche 993, and virtually every time I drive it, people have their cameras out, and give me the thumbs up. 19:52

Na, they've definitely eased up with that shite. They revoked the ban on Chris Harris for calling them out for handin out tuned up n dialled-in cars for press reviews while standard cars were less performing. They had him banned for over half a decade n even went on to warn dealers n high profile owners against loaning him one. They turned all of that around by handing him the 458 Speciale to pit it head to head against the 991 GT3 RS (something they mostly are against doin), the F12 TDF, the LaFerrari n the FXXK. They understand that their old stubborn ways ain't good for business.

The intro was indeed quite funny I agree with the other comments but what i’m not seeing enough of is appreciation to the whole throttle house team on how good they shoot and edit these videos. I feel like I’m in person experiencing the car with them the way they edit all of the shots in, from the back so we can hear the exhaust, the climbing rpms on the gauge, Thomas pushing the clutch in and grabbing another gear, it’s all extremely well shot and made. I never fully realized it until this video since I’ve been watching a lot of extra throttle house non sports car reviews from them recently, but this video is extremely well made. Thomas and James’ reactions to the car and driving experience really put it all over the top and you can tell when they are genuinely enjoying a really special car. Great video as always and can’t believe I’ve been watching you guys this long and just now understood all of the other hard work going on behind the scenes to give us the realest experience and review of a car without ever seeing it in person. I was an 11yo at Mugello in 1995 at Ferrari day, where Montezemolo came in driving the then brand new F50 around the track, and 3 of these 355s got erased in a crush entering the Casanova-Savelli...never forgetting that

I really don't know how all the manufacturers are completely missing the point that their older cars designed for drivers are skyrocketing in value. Car people want a car to drive, they aren't interested in automatic transmissions or television screens.

The moment i saw the video i jsut had to click it instantly. This is my all-time favorite Ferrari, which makes it my all-time favorite car in the world. If given the choice of having any car ever made, it will be a 1996 Ferrari F355 Berlinetta 6-speed manual. Absolutely gorgeous, timeless classic. As for the video - top of the line quality as always guys.

I’ve never had the pleasure of really hearing a gated shifter before. Lyrical. Also, enjoyed the description of shifting like holding a wine glass. Brilliant. Something’s been lost with putting automatics in cars that are begging to be driven.

A curiosity, the 355 Europeans made in the first year, have more hp and less weight! They are much faster than the following ones! Love the 355

The difference is in the 1995 (first year) cars and all the others. You can tell because they have 2 MAF sensors. Those are indeed OBD1 cars and are considered the best and fastest versions. It is not so much a European and Rest of World (ROW) thing.
@pete2072

The '95 US cars have the motronic 2.7 as well, with 2 mafs and the extra power. The only difference row cars had was slightly lighter bumpers and doors, and no airbags, maybe 100lbs lighter total, if that. Not a big difference. They all went to motronic 5.2 (single maf, obd2) and airbags in '96.

Hi Throttle House Team,🤗 I just wanted to say a big thank you for all the amazing content you’ve been delivering to us non-stop! It’s been incredible, and we’ve been glued to our seats with premium entertainment. I got a car here in Winnipeg, MB, that I believe would make a great review video. If you could find the time to squeeze it in in your busy schedule, I’d love to see it! It's the Jaguar XJ portfolio 2012 model with a 5.0-liter V8 in Azurite Blue. I just love the amazing videos you've been putting out here. They're so entertaining, informative, and most of all, lots of fun to watch!❣

Asides from the engine-out service that you should do every 3-5 years, depending on how many miles you drive it, repairs can be a pain. The problem is that when parts need to be replaced, good luck finding them. You'll have to buy used ones and hope that they're not also defective. If you're willing to put all that aside, this is one of the most glorious classic Ferraris to drive, especially with a gated shifter and a Capristo exhaust with high-flow cats. The looks, the sound, the shifting, even the leather all make you feel like you're in something really special. Thanks for the great review!

Yes, the 355 is a classic Ferrari. It's a total shame the upkeep is so crippling. They were coming down nicely in price due to the nightmare maintenance cost.. but of course now that everyone is searching for manual vehicles, this has shot back up in price. There are a number of things I would change to make it look a little more appealing but again, that's personal taste. I still think the bargain to get would be the F430 in manual. Hopefully the world keeps ignoring this model so prices start to drop to more reasonable levels.. 🙂
