Ferrari's $800 Battery Isn't Warrantied and Left Me Stranded

Ferrari makes amazing cars, but sometimes poorly engineers them. My Ferrari 488 suffers from a battery drain issue along with apparently many other 488 owners and Ferrari no longer replaces them under warranty. This is very stupid and Ferrari if you're reading this I still love you please keep selling me your cars. Thanks.

I think that beeping leads to these Ferrari's lighting on fire. Spend that much on a car and that is how it sounds when something is wrong? Unfortunate engine fire sounds like a good solution.

There is no way Ferrarri would win that one in a court, making up the warranty terms and conditions as they go along. Surely just throwing a tantrum in the middle of the dealership would have been enough to take care of that one. I recently had an issue with BMW on my M5 where my AC stopped working. Took it in, a stone had chipped the condenser and caused a leak, they told me it was a chargeable repair. After a little arguing, I asked them to show me any piece of paper that I had signed, where that was specifically an exclusion on the warranty. So 5 minutes later they were fixing it free of charge.

Because something stopped working, while under warranty, it was not caused by neglect, and it was not listed as an exclusion on the warranty terms and conditions. A condenser should not crack under normal use while still under warranty

A month isn’t too bad. When I had my Bentley Arnage the battery would go flat in about one to two weeks without a tender. I’m guessing probably something with the alarms on these cars since they all seem to have motion sensors and other fancy things now that probably draw a lot of power.

I had a battery work perfectly fine, parked the car for a few minutes, went back out to crank it and battery was completely dead and couldn't even jump it. Basically, one of the cells completely died and wouldn't charge. Had to replace the battery. Wondering if it's not the same issue with these, one of the cells is bad.

It's probably that anti tow mode Ferrari is putting on the vehicles. from what I know, it constantly gives the gyrometer power to detect if the vehicle is being tilted up and if so it engages the parking brake and trips the alarm.

That tender is just a band aid. Something like a module is consuming energy and not shutting off most likely. While the tender is charging the load is draining so it was probably charging slow as molasses. They gotta put an amp clamp on it and pull each fuse until no current draw

Alternators will not always charge a battery that is dead, your alternator turns on and off and some of that current goes to power the car, injectors spark plugs interior etc. In fact, when replacing an alternator the manufacturer will tell you to have a fully charged battery. Otherwise you put unnecessary strain on your new alternator and can actually damage it right away. This is not stuff I am making up. I am Aosc certified and a mechanic shop in California. I work on mostly Land Rover and BMWs. My cousin jumpstarted his one year old jeep that sat over the weekend with the lights on the battery was completely dead. He drove it to my shop, which was about 22 minute drive we turned the car off and immediately tried to turn it back on and we got nothing out of the battery not a peep checked the battery connections they were fine we put the battery up diagnostic charger battery tested good put it back and had no problems for two years with that battery

There is a quick disconnect on one of the terminals you can very easily disconnect the battery while in storage but that is really something you shouldn’t have to do with the factory trickle charger that comes with the car I ended up buying a new heavy duty interstate battery because I found out interstate makes the batteries for the Ferrari so essentially it’s the identical battery with different stickers and less than $300 they’re always trying to poke your eyes 👉🏽👀

I suspect a semi-weak alternator is behind the 488 battery issues. The alternator puts out enough power to run the car, but not enough to run the car, power options AND recharge the battery. It would be interesting to see if the same problem exists, if a 488 owner simply drove the car without running any options (radio, power windows, seat heater, etc.). If the problem doesn't reoccur, then see what happens when running the car with the regular options in use.

But about a decade and half ago when i bought my truck it had a parasitic alternator off the factory floor. Had to fight them to fix it but they finally did. It was killing a battery every two weeks and i drove every day. Hopefully it something simple like that.

Got to say, you have to use the Ferrari 488, I have a Spider and it has worked without problem for 2 years whilst driving most days and long trips, as soon as you lay them up for more that 10 days they need the battery conditioner attached, if you leave that on for a long period (like in my case a few months), it knackers the cells and the battery loses charge, even if you drive it. At the first stop it will fail and every warning light will come on. The only solution in that case is a new battery, probably over there it will cost near on $1000 in the UK it's £800 fitted and only get a 12 month warranty.

The only way to really tell about power draw is to put an amp meter in series with a battery terminal and cable to see what the overall static current draw is. If it's too high, then start pulling fuses and measure the current across each one to trace out the offending circuit/module, etc. Then pray Ferrari has a fix for it...Or wire in a switch to disconnect that circuit until you need it manually. $38x large for all that, eh? All for no extra charge! ;-)

Battery science isn't magic. Even in my expensive Porsches when the battery died I went to Walmart and bought a new one - and installed it myself in the parking lot so I could take the old one in for the core refund. The Porsche part was $600, the Walmart equivalent was $110. If you can't change your own battery, you're not a man and shouldn't be driving any enthusiast's car. Still waiting for the battery in my 2015 R8 to see what it'll be like to change that one in the Walmart parking lot.

Hello Rob, Serious question for you, or anyone who owns a super car or exotic car such as this one. Is owning one worth it? I have always been interested in them and might consider getting one if I ever get the chance to afford one. But, I always see videos like this where something simple breaks down on the car and it is really expensive to fix. They’re things that shouldn’t really be an issue with cars but surprisingly are not uncommon with these cars. So I guess my question is, why do you own one? Is it just cause if the brand and what it represents or some other reason? I doubt reliability is the reason.

I wonder if the battery is actually the real problem - it could be the 488's charging system. It would be very interesting to have a lab or electronics engineer inspect the Ferrari battery, to see if it is faulty. If it's okay, then Ferrari has some answering to do about the charging system in these cars.

I've dealt with a lot of car owners like yourself. They have that special car that they only drive occasionally, but they keep it hooked it up to a battery tender or insert some other manufacturer's trickle charger. The problem is these aren't as good as everybody believes. They constantly bring the battery up to full charge then let it fall back to almost discharged and back and forth. Sorry but that is just as bad as letting it sit and going dead. If I were you I'd look at Midtronics. Something like the GR8 Series or the GRX-3000. Those are nice because you take the battery out of the vehicle once every one to three weeks, put it on the smart charger and it will recharge and desulfate the plates inside. Just remember to plug a battery saver into the power point of the car and you should have batteries that last for years then. But I'm only a mechanic, what do I know.

This is why I prefer Corvettes. Less proprietary crap (ie. proprietary battery) where it's not needed.

It seems that the OEM battery is pretty bad. Just try put an aftermarket one, there are pretty good ones over there!

It may be the battery, sure, but I'm guessing not. Probably a draw. I had a maxima where if it sat for more than a week, week and a half, battery was dead. Gotta recognize, there's tons of computers in there, and it only takes a poor electrical decision in one of them to draw a 1 or 2A draw that fries your battery in a matter of hours. Though after 1 hour....that shouldn't be a draw issue, draw would have to be massive, in that case it's probably battery...but usually you don't see new batteries just be bad like that. Hopefully battery fixes it, if not, may just be a wrong decision in the electronics, and you (or rather the next owner) has to eat it...

Isn't there a device that can determine the level of battery drain when the vehicle isn't being driven? Maybe the problem is run of defective batteries. But if the cause is bettery drain, it shouldn't be that difficult to determine the cause.
