Ferrex mini bench grinder PBG75G1 test. I am a great fan of the previous model from Aldi and wanted to see how the newer version compared. How useful is it as a bench grinder and how good is the flexible shaft for stone and slate carving?

Steve I have two grinders and two Dremel's that I use in my shop work.. One of my dremel's is set up in an old craftsman drill press that was made for old drills (I modified it to take the dremel) That one I also put on my flex shaft. the other is a more powerful dremel that I use for my free hand work.. I have yet to try stone though, I do cut and polish stone.. Make little cabs and such.. Plus have three tumblers I play with.. I enjoy watching your stone work and it has inspired me to give it a whirl.. I am still watching and learning right now.. but soon I will start to make my mess.. Carry on my friend.. truly am inspired by your work.. thanks

Glad to hear I am not the only stone nut! Sounds like a serious setup you have there and I am really pleased you like my videos. Do you use genuine "Dremels"? How do you find them? Thank you for the kind comments and for watching. Cheers.

Thanks Steve. We have Aldi stores here in Australia and I'll be looking in the future for one of these tools. I've already bought some Ferrex tools and this one looks like a "no brainer." Thanks for the review mate.

Hi Allan, I just hope this new version is as good as the previous model, only time will tell. But it is such a small risk for gaining a potentially great little tool. Thanks for watching!

Thank you for the excellent review of the bench grinder. Maybe I missed it in the video, can one use the flex-shaft without the grinding wheels rotating?
@thestonecraftingworkshop7490
@thestonecraftingworkshop7490 2 жыл бұрын
Only by removing the wheels, and then the wheel mounting shafts will still be rotating. I simply flip down the wheel shields when I am using the flex tool. Best of luck!

Square aperture for the flexi shaft is off centre so needs a bit of work locating it through the side cover. Also the foam wheel has eccentric rotation.

I have three of these and not had a problem with the shaft. Not used the foam wheel, not sure what it does! Chinese stuff can have problems with quality control.

@@thestonecraftingworkshop7490 It's a woven fabric impregnated with aluminium oxide grit. it is esenssially stuff scotchbrite, a beefier version of the green stuff on the back of sponges. Used for polishing metal, deburring metal, rust or tarnish removal, etc.

Many thanks Steve, I have just purchased this model today and needed a run down. Here in Europe it is currently on sale for 39 Euro. Anyway, as a woodcarver I needed the machine for sharpening small lathe chisels and the like. The bonus was the flex shaft as this is the square type, more solid and reliable than conventional round Dremel versions. The only thing that I question is the use of the cable which should usually be hanging to prevent damage, as this has to be kept fairly straight whilst working plus prevents vibration issues. This may be questionable as to the duration of the flex cord ? It would be interesting to learn your opinion on this matter. Many thanks and excellent videos.

I do not hang mine but as I only use this for stone carving I have not noticed any vibration. I do oil the drive shaft from time to time and have not yet had one fail. This is a good point well made and I will give this some thought, thank you. PS the weak point on the drive is the plastic lock sleeve which seems pretty flimsy. best of luck, cheers!

@@thestonecraftingworkshop7490Many thanks Steve. Yes, the drive lock is certainly one to consider. The other point is that I am left handed and can not use the flex shaft in reverse, an issue they didn't consider either. Thankfully the updated design of having the square shaft is similar to the Foredom and able to maintain more heavy use, though on a quick test it does become unusually hot. Overall I think the tool is handy and I will handle it with care.

I would put the spare carborundum wheel where the polishing wheel is so you can do the long blades

I think you may have incorrectly installed the two guide plates. Looks like you have Left and Right swapped so the bevel edge ends up against the wheels which I think is wrong(?) Interesting video, thanks. Looks like a handy tool.

I wonder would this be able to polish cut glass bottles?
@thestonecraftingworkshop7490
@thestonecraftingworkshop7490 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Desmond, I really don't know. It polishes small bits of stone and marble etc. but I wonder if it lacks a bit of power for bigger jobs. I am not even sure which part of the bottle needs polishing? I do know the actual polishing process for glass is similar to marble but with much finer polishing compounds so for smaller tasks I am sure it would work. sorry I can't be more definite.

Thanks for the reply, well when I cut a bottle, the edges are sharp, which I want to make smoother, sorry that is what I meant by polishing.

Shame we don't see this on slowest speed...I bought one today for plastic modelling and even on slowest speed its really fast...Grinding thin plastics I need a slow grind speed...The speed control on mine seems to be fast and at its lowest setting is slightly slower than fast...Any ideas?
@thestonecraftingworkshop7490
@thestonecraftingworkshop7490 2 жыл бұрын
Hi, the speed range on mine goes from very fast down to very slow, at least seems very slow to me grinding stone etc. It is not powerful at the slowest speed and slows down even more under the slightest load. I can't think of way of slowing this down more. sorry.
