J. Hughes (1986)
" the closer he looks at the child, the less he sees. But the more he looks at, there's nothing there. I think he fears that the more you look at him the less you see. There isn't anything there. That's him" (John Hughes su questa scena)

Out of all the characters in this movie I can identity with Cameron the most, just like most people who like this movie. Ferris Bueller is who we aspire to be, but deep down we know we're all Cameron.

Ferris bueller is fake its all in Cameron's head a fake persona that he came up with that's how he wants to spend his day off that's who he wants to be but it takes him an entire day to realize that he just needs to be himself to be happy the drowning scene represents death and rebirth death of ferris and the birth of a new Cameron that's also the time ferris goes home and the movie ends

+Montain Dude i guess that EVERYBODY had the same thought, at least the ones who think a bit. But we all "carry" a Ferris inside. So the message of the movie is more or less "Cameron you can be Ferris if you want" BUT you can't be Ferris ALL THE TIME. After all why is the Ferris-character still so popular after 3 decades ? Because he's a movie persona, in real life nobody can do all this shit Ferris does and keeping a clean sheet. So no matter how sad it sounds in this life unfortunately we're kind of forced to live like Camerons (afraid of several shitty things), but the point is keep the flame alive and "go Ferris" once in a while.

This scene and this song are pure magic. It's about loneliness, falling in love, the past, the present, and the mysterious future. It's about memories, childhood, experiences, changes, self-assertion, growing up, friendship, hope, fear of losing something that you can never replace. Really touching.

This scene made me cry in the film, it's so beautiful and so unlike the rest of the film and its tone. There's no dialogue, just images, there's music but no words. No slapstick antics or zany jokes. John Hughes films were never sneering patronising comedys laughing at teenagers like so many today. He treated them like real people with hopes and dreams and flaws and fears.

I'm probably one of the few that enjoy melancholy moments. The scene at the museum on Ferris Bueller's Day Off evokes just that particularly when Cameron gets lost in the paint depicting a girl but at closer examination, she not there--she's nothing. The music along with the scenes pulls out such a beautiful melancholy in me that tears, at times, trickle down and I don't bother wiping them away. I'm a funny duck I know...

I think it shows that if you get too close to something, or let others get too close to you, it no longer exists as you once knew it. He's justifying all of his fears, worries and introversion. That and the fact that it's a child with a parent, knowing that his childhood was probably pretty fucked up. The whole thing is terribly sad.

John Hughes - what can you say... It' s a shame he was lost to the world so early. He conveyed his thoughts of world through the eyes of a teenager and did it in a way that even adults had to step back and say wow. I'm no loner young, but if have watched and enjoyed a number of his movies over the past few years, with my teen aged son. Of all of his work, there are two scenes that I remember the most. This one (favorite) and the ultimate line from the Breakfast Club "when you grow up your heart dies...". I don't believe it, but can see where having responsibility as one gets older can be seen in that light. All things said, when I'm laid to rest I would be happy to achieve the smallest fraction of appreciation for a life's work that this man accomplished. Truly a rare talent.
@creativecomicguy
@creativecomicguy 9 жыл бұрын
That's true. And I think John Hughes appreciated it a lot when people, like you and me, appreciated his films. I think that's what he was trying to do: with the Breakfast Club and Ferris Bueller's Day Off in particular, he was trying to make and help people to understand and appreciate what people, whether they be teenagers, Basket Cases, Criminals, Brains, Dicks, janitors, rich kids, poor kids or teachers are, what they go through, and what they can be, and are, underneath, and hopefully value it. I think we do recieve the smallest fraction of appreciation and then a lot more from the man who made these films. And he was a rare talent: he was himself, in his movies. There was only one of him, just like there's only one Ferris Bueller or John Bender, or one of me, or one of you. :)

I would've been exactly in their shoes back then when this movie was released (1986) and I just think to myself where does time take you to? Nowhere. You are still what you were. You're still the child inside. I have watched this movie n number of times since 2004, I have even tried living it, but this part of the movie coupled with Please Please Please... to me definitely defines the journey of life to me. All networks cut scenes from films to fit in adverts, to the point where sometimes the scene itself or the narrative no longer makes any sense. Absolutely infuriating. To think that many hours were spent by award-winning directors and editors in the cutting room to craft these films, only for them to be crudely butchered by networks to cram in another crappy ad for something nobody wants.

@smecking it moves me too..and yes, i barely can explain how it works. Maybe you've already heard what Hughes himself said about this part; but here it is, again, just in case: " the closer he looks at the child, the less he sees. But the more he looks at, there's nothing there. I think he fears that the more you look at him the less you see. There isn't anything there. That's him" Anyway, with or without possible explanations, this scene is (imho) pure beauty.

I always thought this was the finest scene in the movie for its pure pathos and poignancy. It captures the joy and wonder of youth (symbolized by the trio walking hand in hand with the schoolchildren) but also its pains - when Cameron suddenly sees in the Seurat all the love that's been missing from his life.

Cameron is my favorite character in this movie just because he was so relatable and down-to-earth. It reminded me of myself just before I graduated, just numb to the whole idea of entering the "real world" and not knowing where to go because I just didn't care much for it. A brilliant character to work off of Ferris, who is the most opposite in terms of being carefree and lucky all the time, a character built in an ideal fantasy.

Thanks a lot for uploading this. It's definitely one of my favorite scenes, if not the best. I loved it (and the whole movie) even before I realized it has a deeper meaning. Cameron happens to be my favorite character too. I almost want to cry at the end when he's staring at the painting almost in horror. Btw, I think they played this same instrumental cover song on the weather channel once. It's nice and fits the scene too.

Cameron is looking at the painting and realizing that the little girl is crying in it and the mother is not comforting her which is parallel to the fact that his own parents ignore him.

+dancegurl5501 I think it's just suppose to show the powerful effect art has on people- im not sure there is any overall meaning to this scene in relation to the movie - I think It's just meant to make you think - the way art does. thats just my opinion

@finestnostalgia 8 жыл бұрын
+hannessf19 Nope this scene is very significant to Cameron's character as described in the commentary by the director of the movie John Hughes. The more he looks at the child, the less you see. He fears that is what people see when they get to know him. They realize nothing is there. When he is staring at the picture he is thinking "that's me."

The way I see it is that you need to stop and look around. Try to remember who you are and why life truly is beautiful instead of getting caught up in an artificial struggle that you can't see outside of. Cameron looking at the painting is another, simultaneously message that others here have elucidated, but the overarching scene is about stopping to smell the roses. Most of the movie does this in a humorous way, with Bueller being this casual smartass, but here the movie gets serious in it's message of telling you to not be so serious.
