I believe the tube compressor is modeled after the LA2A, which I believe is known for a slower attack, good for applications where you want to preserve some transients.

I was mastering a track yesterday, and I was attempting to use a VCA style compressor (Slate's VBC-Red), and I just couldn't get it the attack just right. I then did the "unthinkable" - I put a stock PreSonus compressor on the mastering session. I did it as a "goof" - something I had never tried. But I ended up keeping it because the fine control over attack time was just what I needed. Moral of the story: Don't underestimate the stock PreSonus plugins. And the Fat Channel compressors are even more unique and useful.

Compressors aside, my biggest go-to in the Fat Channel is the 'Vintage EQ'. It's supposedly modeled on the Neve 1073. It's dirt simple to use and it imparts a little cream on top. Can't live without it. The 'Passive EQ' is modeled on a Pultec. It's good too. ✌

I'm a fan of both. I wonder if the TubeComp has a softer knee that creates the "ramp up" effect? When I use the standard compressor and soften the knee, I notice a similar effect to how the compression reacts.

I recently did some shootout comparisons between the Fat Channel SSL bus comp and the Cakewalk (ProChannel) version of the same. I had another (human) source provide me an option of the REAL SSL hardware with similar settings. It's amazing how deep you can go with these and other options and still come out the end with similar but different sounds. I also compared the Softube Console 1 to many of the FatChannel choices and REALLY liked the Console 1 in most cases. But it's really fun to play with ALL of the Sphere options in addition to these. A lot of this is about the FUN that you can have with mixing - not just quickly ramming through a mix! Which is part of why I subscribe to Sphere - to have options to choose from for each different circumstance. Thanks for the video.

I use Analog Compressors more for character than general compression. As a rule, the aggressive FET Compressor works well on Drums while the smoother Opto Compressor works well on Vocals. You can't really over-compress using an Opto Compressor.

The release on an la2a slows down as it gets closer to zero so it never fully recovers on drums usually. FET compressors are more common because they fully release if you set it accordingly. LA2A is fixed attack and release.

The tube compressor doesn't behave like an LA2A on the release for some reason. Maybe Presonus saw it as an improvement but you cant control it which is strange if your going to model it after an LA2A

if FET has fast attack, why are the drum attacks sharper?
@HewMiller

because it acts fast on the transient which sharpens the sound by closing down on the ringing of a drum. A slower attach would allow more of the ringing through before the compressor closed down which will give a more "pillowy" sound

FET for drums and percussion due to fast attack and Opto for vocals due to slower attack and fast release. Setting a fast attack on vocals kills/dulls a lot of the initial information of the transients, which results in a more pushed back vocal in a mix. For your main vocals you want the vocals to be upfront, so FET compressors are a poor choice for lead vocals, especially for tracking. Fast attack for vocals is generally avoided by mixing engineers that actually know what they are doing. :)

@jurgbunzli8458
@jurgbunzli8458 Жыл бұрын
I don't think you nessecarily need to use slow attack on vocals or that it is wrong to use fairly fast attack times. Using fast attack and release times can help to make a vocal more consistant some times and to really bring it upfront. It always depens on your intetion and the voice. On the other side a slow attack can help with (rythmic) pronounciation (e.g with rap vocals very good)

@@officialWWM If you turn on the key filter, you can select which frequencies you want the compressor to listen for. So lets say you want to de-ess your vocals. You set it so it's only picking up really high frequencies. It'll still compress the whole signal that you're feeding it, but it'll only do so when it hears those high sibilant sounds. In other words it'll leave your track alone until it hears sound in the range you've selected and then it'll compress the whole signal.

I like Presonus things a lot, but they need to improve the quality of their plug-ins. A quick comparison allows us to conclude that they do not come close to the quality of the competitors' plug-ins and do not behave in the expected way of a 1176 or LA2A, being generally very skittish, even adjusting the input gain to the level of work of the analog equipment. There are several interesting comparisons on the home recording made easy channel.

You are right, I agree with you. However the extension pack of the fat channel has some very good emulations of other compressors like the SSL, and the DBX. And some good eqs like the dangerous and the API. Probably they should update the ones that come with the standard version of the fat channel.
