Hes tries to push her away and shut down the conversation several times but she keeps it going really well. At first I thought maybe she was being sarcastic about him being a good listener, but then I realized he actually was intently thinking about what she said the entire time he was silent.

I actually don't find Rinoa or Quistis for the matter, to be good around shy people. I used to be a shy person myself. I had people who behaved the same way as Rinoa and Quistis do with Squall. I didn't like the way they always complained I am not talking to them. I wished they'd leave me alone and stop complaining to me to change myself to become a person they want me to become. I want to be myself and I wished people were more accepting of me. One thing I'd tell, shy people don't like people complaining to them about their personality. Shy people are not always depressed or troubled people. They generally feel anxiety at the beginning when they are with new people but gradually they grow and become more relaxed. People should just be patient and let them be. That helps more than telling them to change or open up and complain about their worries. Again, not all shy people are depressed or having troubles that is making them be shy. They just feel anxiety but it goes away on its own. So just be patient around them. It fixes on its own. Now Squall, I wouldn't say he was timid. He wasn't shy in the way that he felt anxiety. He just like to keep to himself. He's something of a reserved, cautious and logical person. He didn't like to complain and exaggerate or dramatize a situation than what it was. And I get the feeling that people complaining to him and trying to change him made Squall want to ignore and avoid forming relationships. You wouldn't like to be friends with people who do not accept you and always complain about your personality. One thing I noticed is that the characters have a problem with Squall being 'cool' and how he doesn't complains. Squall is the type of person who'd rather spend his time focusing on doing what he needs to do rather than complain and have people sympathise with him. For some reason, all of his friends want him to complain about anything that is troubling him. I don't know why. I think they wanted Squall to be talkative. I think they thought Squall had difficulty expressing himself. I don't think he had difficulty in expressing himself. He would express his mind when necessary. He just keeps his thoughts and opinions to himself and wouldn't express them until it is necessary. That's the kind of person he was. I think people around him misunderstood his personality.

Squall is a powerful gust of wind, his name is meant to be opposite of Laguna, who is calm like the summer breeze (despite being extroverted). Squall's actual personality is anything BUT calm. And he wants someone to let him open up a bit. Some guys are like that, they NEED a girl to basically grab their hand and force them to do what he'd loved to but is too shy to admit. The dance scene is their relationship in microcosm. He WANTS to dance, and he likes it, he just will never make the first move and will resist being forced, until he finally gives in... Really the start of the story is Rinoa being a kind of a Manic Pixie Dream Girl helping an introverted guy come out of his shell, think movies like Chungking Express, Roman Holiday, Fifth Element or Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. He (poorly) pretends he hates the attention from the crazy girl teasing him. He doesn't. He loves it. He is just too shy to admit it. Squall isn't the person he's pretending to be. Not the stoic serious commander with no feelings, he's very sensitive and easy to hurt, also afraid of rejection... so he rejects people on his own, his logic is "if I tell them to leave me _they_ will not tell me to go away". He is so afraid of loneliness he decides to be alone... It's a classic brooding hero archetype in a lot of romantic movies actually. BTW, they did the same with Cloud and Aerith relationship dynamic, except they don't end up together.

@@KasumiRINA I don't know. The way the game unfolded and how the characters behaved doesn't seems like that's how Squall was. Rinoa didn't start to open him up at the beginning. It was only on Disc 2 do we see Rinoa doing what you said - trying to get a quiet guy out of his shell. An example is when Squall gave her a tour in Balamb Garden. Squall only became the type of guy you mentioned - the introvert guy who wants to be an extrovert but can't do it himself - on Disc 3. This is more evident when he's in Ragnarok with Rinoa. The rest of the time Squall was the serious, calm type like I mentioned. Though I suppose there were a few instances when he was the type having difficulty to get out of his shell on Disc 2. Particularly when Rinoa was trying to open him up.

@@KasumiRINA Also I don't think Rinoa is like a Manic Pixie Dream Girl. She hardly shown any traits of that. Selphie seems more like a Manic Pixie Dream Girl. Like how she jumped off the cliff at Dollet, would suggest to blow a train with a rocket launcher, joked about skinning the Moomba, how she did the Missile Base Mission etc.

One of fails in translation is Rinoa comes off as less cute and childish, many in the West HATED her guts because she's pushy, but in Japanese she's more cutesy while doing it (so more non-threatening for shy guys).

@@masteraxe1453 It is one of the most important games on the PS1. Stories could be told during battle like how Rude will never attack Tifa because of spoilers. For the time it was known for it's groundbreaking graphics and the characters/environment had been fully fleshed out. Plus the gameplay had changed from 4 Party Memebers to 3 and the feature of Limit Breaks, Materia, and Equipment made it stand out from Ff1 to 6.
