Listen to the music. Jewish music at the beginning, then Russian music, and when Tevye starts dancing with the Russian guy the music begins to mix between both styles in a way that they are not different, but a great new one. John Williams ftw.

I actually like this scene. Even though the movie ends on a sad note, it's scenes like this that show that people do want to live together in peace, and folks with different beliefs can still celebrate good news like an impending wedding side by side. It is optimistic in that if people could only overcome political differences, we can live together in harmony, because the usual man just wants to drink and be merry. Whether this is true of the real world is up to debate, but I always thought that had been the underlying message in this particular story. Perchik goes off to join other Jews and gentiles because they didn't like what the government was doing. The Constable warns Tevye about messing up the wedding because he was under orders and couldn't disobey; it was implied that he tried his best to minimize the damage as much as possible. This all implies that the people themselves just want to get along.

You're right. It just makes it all the more upsetting that the chances of unity and solidarity between different cultures are possible, (the friendly relationship between Tevye and the Russian officer, for example) but all of the conflict and destruction happens anyway.

I know we're mostly supposed to be impressed by the singing and dancing here (and I am!), but can we just have a shout out to the crew behind this piece? Peter Lamont on Set Decoration - the place looks and *feels* like a dingy, wooden tavern, there's dust in the air and practically cobwebs between the rafters, it's super atmospheric, but, thanks to cinematography by Oswald Morris, you can see everything that is happening and even with all the action and movement and huge jumble of people, you feel like you're still getting to see all the good stuff, you're not missing anything. And just huge HUGE props to Joan Bridge and Elizabeth Haffenden who did the costumes. Super accurate, beautiful, authentic, some of the best costuming work in a period piece ever done, PERIOD, AND, somehow, all done tough enough to stand up to being danced in! Everyone working on this film was so on the ball, and it really shows in the final product. The production quality on this film is absolutely astounding, and it absolutely deserves to be recognised and remembered as one of the greatest musical productions of the 20th century. Nerd rant done.

If I may add to your nerd rant, I love the way the film displays not only its theme of tradition, but of relationships. Relationships with family, friends, neighbors, and the environment. In this scene, you'll note that the Jewish patrons come together as if they're part of the same flesh and blood, but once the band of young Ukrainian dancers join the celebration they back away. Sure, these boys mean no harm and only wish to show friendship, but as evidenced by their body language and facial expressions the Jews can only see them as enemies of their faith. It isn't until Tevye takes up the offer to dance that the rest of his friends decide to do likewise. The idea of invisible barriers of race, religion, gender, etc., has been around for years, but as this musical demonstrates, it is possible to look past them and see one another as fellow human beings. So, I fully agree that this is one of the best musical productions ever made.

In the wake of the conflict between Ukraine and Russia in 2022, and what we are now learning about what the green soldiers told they were attending platoon training before being actually sent to kill their cousins in Ukraine, this is the reality of the emotions. The violence and its direction comes from those who have power in order to keep it. Those who have no power to keep wish only for good fortune: for themselves, for their neighbors, for the random dudes in a bar celebrating someone's bachelor party. The thing Oh please. The war in Ukraine comes from NATO and Ukraine every bit as much as Russia. Zelensky is a huge conman, not even close to being pro Democracy, jails his political opponents, got rid of all independent press, and is definitely picketing at least half of the money we send over there. Russia and Ukraine have hated each other for a log time. The place Fiddler on the Roof takes place used to be Russia, and is now Ukranian. They are not cousins. Ethnically Russian Ukrainians are the largest minority, but they are mistreated and hated by Ukrainians. And all soldiers are green until their become veterans. Its one of the reasons that countries fight. They want to have soldiers who have experienced war.

One brilliant element of this scene is the ever-present danger -- even when the two sides are both dancing at the end, the Jews and Gentiles are still completely in their own groups, fully separated. This is an underrated comment. I see a lot of people on here talking about dance bringing them together in peace but I think that's not what we see here. The tension between the two groups is expressed in many ways throughout the whole scene: the Jewish men's responses to the Russians intervention in their celebration are anxious and careful, the Russians are quite aggressive in their dance style and although they seem to mean well, you can't be sure if they're going to "go off". I remember feeling doused in ice-water when the Russians interjected, feeling the how quickly their segment of the song morphed and "overtook" the scene, then a bit of relief at the well-wishes and good cheer, and abrupt tension again the instant the two worlds literally "collide". As a child I was enchanted by the mix of dances and harmony of culture in this scene and now when the two mix I'm still in awe, but it's mixed with the fragile surprise of "Oh! I always thought there was a really intriguing element of tension to this scene. Even though the scene ends with a very nice, positive dance off between the Jews and the Russians in this, you can tell the Jews are pretty nervous throughout it. Like when Tevya bumps into the dancer at 2:52 and there's that awkward where Tevya nervously waits to see how the dancer is going to react; is he going to brush it off and keep dancing or is he going to try to hurt me? Throughout the dance sequence (and really throughout the entire film) you really get a rich sense of how the Jews are always a little nervous around the dominant population because they know how quickly those fuckers can turn around and start a pogrom. I think this sequence is especially illuminating because people would often describe pogroms in Ukraine as having a carnival or party-like atmosphere. People would be laughing and singing as they fucked up a shtetl; they would all cheer when someone broke into a Jewish house, ripped open the pillows, and threw the feathers in a flurry out the window. It was the exact same kind of energy that you see in this scene, and you can see why the Jews are so nervous about it.

I've been working on a translation of a document about a Christian riot against a Jewish quarter in northeastern Spain in the 13th century. It's from the rioters' POV, in an attempt to justify their actions, and even as told through a scribe in Medieval Catalan it's messy, chaotic, self-serving, and self-incriminating all at once. They were actually pissed off at the Templar commander of the town's fortress for coming down and telling them to stop. Apparently, he was successful, though, because it doesn't appear that anyone died.

That guy that holds the note at 1:23 is amazing! I love this song, it's one of my favorites in the film. I especially how it was able to blend the traditional Jewish dancing and traditional Russian dancing. It's also depressing because we all know what happens at Tzeitel and Motel's wedding. *sighs* And they were getting along so perfectly.

I don't know why, but the part when Tevye takes the dancer's hand when he offers it just makes me so happy. This whole scene just fills me with hope. All people, no matter how different in culture or tradition, can share in the same happiness together. Back in the school days, we staged the musical version of Fiddler on the Roof, I took part in the dance for the song Lechaim. Well our group dance was no where close to the original yet it was still challenging. I remember pulling my hamstring during rehearsals and had to miss practice for a week which could have cost me my place on the dance team. Thankfully, I recovered in time and made it for the D -day. Indeed, great memories! Lechaim, cheers to life!

I find it interesting how we can live in the same country at the same time and yet almost live in different universes. I knew that that TV series "The Big Bang" existed, but in spite of some recommendations by friends, I have never watched it -- partly because I don't have cable, and partly because I have no real interest in modern sitcoms. When "Reesies" first mentioned it, I thought it was a misplaced comment on the cosmological theory!

One of the greatest movies of all time. If we could all learn to get along with people who may be different from us, the world would be a better place. Maybe hope can be found in dance and music.

I think this is one of the more contagious expressions of celebration and joy of all cinema, ever.
