I always loved the inner humility of Tevye. He wants things for himself and his loved ones, and wants to be respected, but ultimately it would be the quiet contemplation of the scriptures that brings him the greatest joy.

@@driesvanc8764 it's not quite that, it's more tevyes character. He throughout the movie loves to discuss and think things through but people almost always shoot him down or ignore his ideas and the wisdom he does have. So what he wants is to be intellectually stimulated and met as an equal. He also wants to *discuss* his faith, not blindly follow it. It's an admirable position to have in any belief but it's clear that in this character's case he wants to be seen as who he feels he is inside rather than how society/class/circumstances forces him to act/behave. That's why the scene of him rejecting his daughter hurts so much to witness, he's too broken at that point due to all he's faced to be able to choose his child. His character is really interesting and most importantly, realistic, to many unsung men who have existed throughout history ^__^

This was my grandfather's all-time favorite song. He begged me to watch this film for several years but I hesitated because I'm not a fan of musicals. Finally, I gave in and realized why he loved Fiddler on the Roof so much. After he passed away from a sudden heart attack in 2017, I found out he left his DVD copy of Fiddler on the Roof to me. I keep it in a safe place in my home. Whenever I miss him, I put this song on and pretend I'm singing with him. RIP Grandpa Hector 💔.

The two most beautiful parts of this song are the fact that Tevye wouldn't try to change his wife (he truly loves her) and the fact that his real wish in being wealthy is simply to have the time to spend with the rabbis learning the Torah.

I also think it is rather poignant that in wanting to be a rich man he still thinks in a humble peasant's terms - wanting a 'fine tin roof' for example. In this he is clearly not aware of the types of roofs the very rich could actually afford in fine mansions. :)

@@su-rv2uq The burden that you refer to (though not in the song), is the need to marry them off to nice boys who will be able to provide for them. The hard work you do, is because you want to, not because you'll be living under a bridge if you don't.

I was rocking with the song, and had the BIGGEST grin when he did the dance. I can see my mom shimmying and snapping and singing. Sometimes it would start with her humming a random tune, and then it'd work its way into full on "Yubby dibby dibby dibby dum!" complete with the dance. I'm here because I was reading, and started humming a random tune that turned into this song. I love how these sweet memories unlock and bring us joy later on in life.

He would sing this song A capella to resounding applause. It was like being present at a live stage performance. He has since passed away but I'm thankful for being blessed with for his rendition and can only wonder what it must have been to be in the audience for Topol's presentation.

More money because he wouldn’t have to do hard labor as he’s doing right now, and farm animals because he’s starving The second verse is things he really want but don’t have. A wife he can pamper and provide for, and the respect and adoration of his community And lastly the thing he wants more than all. Being able to spend more time on his religion

I remember watching the live stage musical of Fiddler on the Roof in 1966 in Sydney Australia My mum was thrilled with the songs from the film & insisted my Dad & me go to the theatre & i REALLY didnt want to go.... I was 12yrs old & only listened to pop music However i absolutely LOVED this musical! The biggest memory of seeing it live was the male dancers in the wedding scene! The stage shook & the floor puffed up swathes of dust as the dancers did their marvellous Linking of arms & doing a kind of Russian style of male dancing! I still see that scene on the stage so clearly & its 50 odd years later. I sang every song from it, all the time! We got the Record LP from the film & i still love all of the songs! Topol was a great actor & singer in the film & made it so real. Thank you for this! Im going to listen to it again ( probably more than twice!) Peace 🇬🇧👧

I just learned this actor, Chaim Topol, is still alive with the humble age of 84. This also means he is just 36 here. I was under the impression he had died decades ago. Update: He died in the early morning today. May he rest in peace.

RIP Topol. Your performance is the biggest reason why this is my favorite live-action musical and one of my favorite films period. Honestly, reading the AP obituary and reading that he had no complaints about being known almost solely for this role and spent his latter years trying to help sick kids made me genuinely happy.
