For so long, rain has been widely associated with gloominess and depression in many cultures. Gene Kelly smashes that common metaphor to pieces here. Not only does the rain not take away from his joy, it ADDS to his joy. Fantastic.

You know what's really crazy about this movie? It was made in the 1950s but set in the 1920s. That's like a movie today being set in the 1990s. Perspective can alter so much. Makes me appreciate all the times I spent singing and dancing in the rain.

I think the OP was suggesting looking back from 1950s to 1920s we would see big differences as we would today going back 30 years. I disagree because technologically in both periods things are roughly the same. 1980s to 1950s is a big change and that was exploited to the maximum for example in Back to the Future. @@antoinepetrov

Gene Kelly turned a romp in the rain into the most classic onscreen masterpiece of tap-dancing we are ever likely to be able to view and marvel at. I was 8yrs old when the movie came out, but did not get to see it until I was around 19. I could hardly believe my eyes and ears were witnessing such a creative genius at work when England was yet to awake to its own form of popular music & the rock and roll era of "The Swingin" 1960's". Do read the Wikipedia record of this, to really get to understand and appreciate all that went into making the movie and the Hall of Fame status it achieved for posterity. I'll be performing and singing "Singin' In The Rain", and playing it on my Harmonic to keep the memory alive until I have to hand over the baton to other singers and performers. Then I'll have it played at my funeral to see me off in the manner I would most like to. RIP everyone who gave this gem to us.

I think it's safe to say that Gene Kelly's rain dance scene has reached iconic status. I worked as a recreation therapist in nursing homes and assisted living facilities in which I'd feature Gene in a program and show this--the patients' faces would light up. Once while I did this program, a newly admitted patient who wasn't adjusting well came. When I showed the rain dance scene, he got excited and opened up: "Oh my goodness! I remember when this came out--I met my wife that year! I loved Gene Kelly's dancing. I loved 'Singin' in the Rain'--it was raining when it opened in the theaters." I replied, "It sounds like life was imitating art." He laughed and said, "Yes, it certainly was." After that, this patient stopped being argumentative and became social with everyone. What an effect Gene Kelly had on this man!

I just read your story, actually it's the second time I have read it. I have a friend who works as a diversional therapist in a nursing home. Maybe that is what people like yourself are called here in Australia. It's the most noble work because it can be difficult and challenging and I think you really need a heart for people to do this important work. My friend is always trying to come up with ideas to help bring the elderly and depressed out to socialise and communicate, and certainly to get them a little more mobile. I'm sure she would think what you did would be a fantastic idea. I'm going to recommend to her what you shared here on KZfaq with us. Thank you so much for your heartwarming story and for all that you do for those in need of special care. God bless you.

A beautifully done and well-choreographed song and dance routine of the 50’s. A bygone era of standards, dignity and respect for other people. A simple and relaxed time in America before smartphones and the internet. Also a time when society wasn’t fragmented and polarized like it is today. There is still good in America. You just have to look harder for it now. It doesn’t make good copy. I know this because I’m midway into my 7th decade.

I was born in '59 but I always LOVED the big dance movies and stars. My faves of course Fred Astaire and the stunning Ginger Rogers! But SITR is in my personal 'Hall of Fame'. I used to dance so much in my younger days and I have been known (if out when its raining and I have my umbrella) to start splashing in puddles AND SPINNING MY BROLLY.......much to the applause and amusement f people at bus stops or in town! SUPERB AND UNEQUALED - CUE GENE.........................

About 10 years ago his young wife was traveling the country presenting scenes from many of Gene's moves. She said he filmed this first in the rain however you could not hear his tapping because of the rain. So he waited until the next dry day and danced the exact same routine so his steps could be heard. AMAZING.

This movie was my Great-Grandmother's favorite movie, and she would always sing this song to me when I was a child. Now I'm entering my Junior year of High School. She passed away from Cancer two years ago. I wouldn't be where I am now without her. She was, and always will be, my favorite person. She never said a mean thing about anybody, and up until the end, when I had to see this energetic and loving woman frail and sickly in hospice, she never stopped smiling. I miss her more than I think I'll ever truly understand. I hope that in the afterlife, if one even exists, she's tapdancing there, happy.

Maybe if you were a heterosexual, White male-then *maybe* you would enjoy life in the '50s. Other than that caveat, your life would be considerably worse than it is today-for most, worse wages and worse living condition, with no distractions from your downtrodden life like phones, tablets, and computers. Black women weren't even allowed to vote yet.
