CLIP DESCRIPTION:
At a baseball game with Terence (James Earl Jones), Ray (Kevin Costner) receives another message.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
"If you build it, he will come." That's the ethereal message that inspires Iowa farmer Ray Kinsella (Kevin Costner) to construct a baseball diamond in the middle of his cornfield. At first, "he" seems to be the ghost of disgraced ballplayer Shoeless Joe Jackson (Ray Liotta), who materializes on the ballfield and plays a few games with the awestruck Ray. But as the weeks go by, Ray receives several other messages from a disembodied voice, one of which is "Ease his pain." He realizes that his ballfield has been divinely ordained to give a second chance to people who have sacrificed certain valuable aspects of their lives. One of these folks is Salingeresque writer Terence Mann (James Earl Jones), whom Ray kidnaps and takes to a ball game and then to his farm. Another is Doc Graham (Burt Lancaster), a beloved general practitioner who gave up a burgeoning baseball career in favor of medicine. The final "second-chancer" turns out to be much closer to Ray. That "magical" field in Dyersville, Iowa still draws thousands of baseball-happy tourists each year.

Here's a fun story (I'll pass it along like someone else did before me): James Horner saw a preview of the film and was so moved by it, he dropped what he was doing and agreed to score the movie. The Hollywood higher-ups wanted a traditional orchestral score, something more involved and fuller sounding, but James argued for the quiet and ghostly score used. I doubt there was ever really that much contention over it because the results speak for themselves. This score is almost the epitome of doing less with more. The score is absolutely a character itself, the gentle piano combined with the brash stingers creates an atmosphere that is otherworldly.

I don't know how many times I've walked those streets around Fenway. I grew up enthralled by the Red Sox, and the first time I saw that field, it was as if I were in heaven. I personally wad never close to my dad. Those boyhood memories of baseball and fatherly love were heavily entwined for me. Baseball was all the hope and wonder of the world while my relationship with my dad was all the pain. The scene where he's playing catch with his dad tore at the very fiber if my soul. But we have been reconciled and it was our only bond, and was our only connection, baseball that was the only thing that drew us near.

@Joan Brown I can answer this one. While we were not exactly relevant to the film, we are very cool and hip. Some would even say “with it”. The producers were concerned that Kevin Costner was too old and lame to sell tickets, so they included us in the film to draw in the young people. This is why you see our faces featured prominently in every Field of Dreams poster or trailer, and why we’re billed above Costner in the film’s credits. Director Phil Robinson has since credited us with making the film such a success.

@@mr.nibblenips4231 Excellent question. We were filmed within the opening of this clip, where Kevin Costner is sitting with James Earl Jones. Unfortunately the shots that were included in the final cut of the film were done with cameras that were facing away from where we were located in the stadium; as a result we’re not actually visible in the film itself. The footage of us in the stadium is probably still floating around somewhere, maybe even on one of the dvds. I honestly have no idea.

It's interesting, and at the same time amusing, that during the scene in Fenway Park in "Field of Dreams", the fans sitting around Costner and Jones are talking to each other and yet you can't here what they are saying because obviously they were instructed by the film's director to merely fake talking to each other and to remain silent during the scene (except for clapping at the play on the field at the beginning of the scene) so that they would not be heard while Costner and Jones were saying their lines of dialogue in that scene in the film.

My bro and I flew from Washington state to attend a game between the Yankees and Red Sox at old Yankee Stadium back in '08, the last year the Yankees played there. We then drove up north and hit the basketball Hall of Fame and then the baseball Hall of Fame, then continued north to Boston and took in a Red Sox game at Fenway. Well worth the trip. The thing that strikes you about Fenway is just how green everything is and it's a shade of green that doesn't ever quite get captured on TV.

I have been there quite a few times. If you go I suggest you park outside of town and take the subway, better known as " the T". Parking in Boston is expensive and traffic is "wicked bad". I live in Rhode Island and always park at the garage in Quincy and take the Red Line into town and then at Park Street Station I hop on to the Green Line. From there you can hop on 4 different trains to Kenmore Square . You walk right down that street to where Costner drove out when they left Fenway. Stop at that place on the corner, the Cask and Flagon for some wicked awesome curly fries!

It is so logical to assume that Terrance Mann is a ghost at the end of the film, having died at some point along the way. Many, many fans think that Terrance dies after Ray drops him of at his apartment. We see Ray driving off in his van, with Terrance not in sight as Ray pulls away we see Terrance grab his jacket and we see him in the van's windows but as the van passes where Terrance is standing Terrance has disappeared , so did he drive off as soon as he dropped Terrance off and Terrance died or was he already dead . Also As Ray pulls away he turn to a different street and in front of his van is Terrance looking different. Terrance could have had a heart attack as soon as he entered the building etc and Ray does indeed see his ghost, we know that as in the real world, ghosts in the film can assume solid form and interact with objects, Doc Graham is picked up and interacts with the van as a ghost. The van scene and Terrance disappearing convinces me that Terrance was indeed a ghost. The supernatural is/are above all natural laws including physics and thus those laws cannot be applied. It makes perfect sense for Terrance to have died and be a ghost in this film masterpiece. James Earl Jones has said he is intrigued by the idea in an interview and probably some of the cast and crew are as well.

@ joe danns. When I saw "Field of Dreams" in the theater , in the scene in which Ray drops Terrance Mann off at his apartment and then turns the van around, I thought that Ray made a U-turn and did not turn onto a side street. I'll have to look at the scene closer to see if he actually turned down a side street.

@@michaelbarlow6610 100% u-turn. The chrome angled bumper is the main giveaway on the machine, then you can see the double curve, but the cars parked don’t match. Prob not a continuous shooting.

Sports mark the passage of time. We can always look back and link sports to our past. We can’t escape it. Sports remind us of our past. This World Series or that Super Bowl. We won’t forget those moments

My first professional team championship as a fan was 2006 (World Series). I remember exactly where I was, what I was wearing, how I was sitting with my right leg fidgeting away like crazy, the friends I was with, and the immense feeling of euphoria as Adam Wainwright struck out Brandon Inge to win it all. It is immensely unfair that some sports fans will never get to experience that. I hope even my worst enemies get that feeling at least once. It's magical.

See, I never got the visceral hatred of other sports teams. Fans that literally hate each other. That you wouldn't want to go to other stadiums. I'm an Indians/ Guardians fan and I LOVE wrigleyville and wrigleyfield. This literal hatred of other teams is so childish. Just because your a die hard fan of a team doesn't mean you can't appreciate other stadiums.

@@crispinjulius5032 Dom makes a good point because near the end of the film Terence, after being 'invited' by Shoeless Joe, disappears into the cornfield just like all the baseball playing 'ghosts' which indicates that Terence himself was also dead and that Ray basically went on a journey of 'hallucination' throughout the movie to achieve the end goal of being given the chance to reconcile with his father. All the 'ghosts' he met were links in the chain to make that possible.
