it's the way they're literally exploring so many genres from the 90s and the 2000s but making them so fresh and unique every single time for me! They're truly one of a kind!!!

When "Supernatural" dropped today, I am in love with the "New Jack Swing" beat as soon I listened to the song. I know it's not 100% the "New Jack Swing" genre, but NewJeans done it the best compared to the other k-pop groups that release this type of song recently. Fun fact: When I am in a shopping mall today, I was listening to NewJeans's "Supernatural", I think I almost start dancing and make myself a clown, it was so embarrassing.

The song was sampled from pharrell's song for manami "back of my mind" back in '09. That's why I think it feels nostalgic cus it's from the og composer of songs that hits back in 90s to 2000s ✨💯

There's definitely an "oh yeah that's the 90s" move in the choreo somewhere in there I can't describe... Reminds me of a certain song by H.O.T. hahaha

I got on point the point you said about the critique in general, the way nowadays artists handle the old sound. Wow, that’s a sharp insight. Thanks for your reaction and comments.

Also agree on the today-versus-the-90s vocals. There would definitely be more processing with today's digital recording workflows, and more autotune compared to then. It does sound different.
@fifizappareactsАй бұрын
It’s not an easy era to replicate at all!
@kswsquaredАй бұрын
@@fifizappareacts Maybe studios can go back to the more analog recording setups used back then, costs aside, but that would mean more intense training for singers i.e. there's no digital processing fallback so they have to get good. Then again as you said the themes and songwriting styles are different so yeah it would still be hard to pull off...

Analyzing the theory "Supernatural" according to someone else's thoughts and guesses - I found this comment on another reaction video's comment section!! Supernatural - supernatural phenomenon The first scene is the city on a thunderous night. Surely the weather in this city is unstable. Danielle's first song: "Stormy Night" with a TV screen showing the daily weather forecast -> proving that these girls work in weather- related jobs. Next, NewJeans stepped out of the truck. If you pay attention, this vehicle has a transceiver mast, this is a specialized vehicle used to forecast weather in all terrain conditions. So here we can temporarily understand that NewJeans plays the role of a supernatural weather forecasting team. The city is experiencing unexplainable weather phenomena, so NJs has been called to investigate. During the investigation, Haerin encountered a unicorn hybrid zebra (called a zebra unicorn or what???) and was hypnotized by this unicorn (?). Next, Danielle suddenly discovered that her eyes were glowing, electric wires were growing all over her hands, followed by an electrically charged cloud. It seems that supernatural phenomena in this city can transform the people and animals here. In the next part of the MV, we will see the scene of Minji and Hanni having a tense argument on the balcony, Hanni said "I will definitely investigate". Maybe it's because the whole team was called in to deal with supernatural phenomena, but Haerin was hypnotized and Danielle was radioactive. In the teaser for part 2, we can clearly see the image of the rabbit-eared flying saucer getting closer to city, the rabbits all turn towards the flying saucer as if towards the mother planet. MOST SPECIAL: looking across the city, the broadcasting tower has turned into rabbit ears. It seems like alien rabbits have invaded city BUT ATTENTION - WHAT ROLE DOES HYEIN PLAY IN SUPERNATURAL? If you notice from the beginning of the MV, Hyein does NOT interact with any NewJeans members - only interacts with the male character. All scenes with Hyein are either solo or talking and laughing with the male protagonist. Especially at - Minji patted the male lead's shoulder to go but completely ignored Hyein??? Is Hyein's character originally an invisible ghost and only the male lead can see it? Hyein is introduced at the beginning of the video as Lee Hyein aka The Bunny - so Hyein and The Bunny are one - but The Bunny's dance scenes also appear and disappear, the same filming set but parts include The Bunny and parts do not. Let me guess here: Hyein is a person from the rabbit planet, casting invisibility spells to blend into the NewJeans reconnaissance squad. Who would have thought that a young man in the NewJeans investigation team would see Hyein and the two sides having a crush on each other. In the back, little Hyein shows her true Super Rabbit form, driving a flying saucer to invade the city. "Supernatural is a song that portrays a message of hope about a destined relationship, that no matter how painful things get, our relationship will last forever!" Guess that's it, the MV part 2 will be released next week and see how it goes. Who knows, maybe this unexpected plot twist will be part 2 of the MV OMG these kids are all mentally imagining it?

NJ is opening in many avenues for music exploration especially for stans who listen almost exclusively to kpop. When the Supernatural teaser dropped, I remember a bunch of people asking recommendations for similar tunes. The Pharell William track they sampled here is also in the charts rn. That's an achievement no amount of albums sales or charting can top

Some people have a one dimensional music taste and this year they’ve been deviating a lil from the more “trending” sounds in pop I feel so maybe the tracks have been less appealing for a lot of people!
@soldeIunaАй бұрын
The song is more faithful to actual 90's New Jack than the more modern versions of the genre, and that in part has to do with Pharrell being one of the producers of this song. Another thing that I find interesting is the use of the "oh!" vocal samples during the chorus that's being utilized is very reminiscent of how it used to be done, as well as the right use and time of the orchestral hits, synclavier sounds and synths that actually sound like actual analog synths. It's chord progression also helps in making it sound more "New Jack" because its using similar chord progressions to those used in those songs back in the day, whereas Finesse still has basic and simple chord progressions as it's just being more mainstream, not pushing too hard on RnB. It's definitely giving Teddy Riley/Michael Jackson's Dangerous album vibes, like Remember the Time, or Can't Let Her Get Away, and it's something I desperately wanted to hear in K-POP for such a long time.

Hey Fifi can I get the link to the new jack swing playlist?
Everyone keeps saying 90s but this is way more 80s. New jack swing is 80s, and so is the sound
@fifizappareactsАй бұрын
Late 80’s to early 90’s actually … groups like Jodeci and Big bell devoe released songs like this in the 90’s. Big Bell Devoes ‘poison’ was released in 1990! You also have groups like colour me bad releasing their new Jack swing albums in the 90’s! Jade, Hi-Five, and Heavy D and the boys also examples of artists releasing new Jack swing in the 90’s! So yeah… that’s why people are saying 90’s … cos it was popular and being released then, not just the 80’s! Hope this helps :)
@preslim84Ай бұрын
@@fifizappareacts true, it did linger into 90-91 but it's still most associated as the 80s. 90s has a totally different sound, dance and aesthetic. Source I'm old
@fifizappareactsАй бұрын
Just did a quick google of new jacks swings most popular time and apparently it dominated the charts 1989 - 1993! I guess it’s similar to the late disco sound creeping into the 80’s as well !
@preslim84Ай бұрын
@@fifizappareacts ya pretty much that, it's a sound and aesthetic that just fits what the entire 80s was more cause the hip hop shift in the 90s was dramatic, into Nas, jayz, Tupac, biggie, Mary J Blige, Destinys Child (Beyonce), Aaliyah, etc. Hope that makes sense

This is interesting and funny because I actually like how Kpop is taking influences from the 90s/early 2000s era of music. I personally think the best era of music is the 90s to early 2000s. I don't like when kpop does 70s to 80s simply because I dislike these eras of music. Basically, 80s was more popularized in kpop during the retro trend in 2020 and 2021, and I dislike it because it was overcontrived and it lacked the groups specific charms. The only group that has been able to do late 70s to early 80s music properly is Twice with the formula of love album and Oneus Black Mirror.
