Remember.. 1. Your flights suit your employer not you, live with it 2. You’re staying at a mining camp, not a 5star resort, live with it. 3. Everyone is eating at the same mess, don’t piss and moan about the food. Find something you can eat and live with it. 4. If you have a wet mess, avoid it, you’re there to make money, not piss it up the wall. Antisocial, yeah, live with it. 5. If you’re on a 3/1 roster, tell your employer to shove it and find a better roster, 3/1 is bullshit.. 2/2 on days only is the holy grail. 6. Lastly and most importantly, if you’re struggling and having dark thoughts for fuck sake please find someone you trust you can talk it out with. No mining gig is worth you checking yourself out existence. Your mates on site will help you, guaranteed. Stay safe.

For 12 years all I have been taking to the mine site camp is a backpack with much the same gear as you had, with most of the 7kg made up of 4kg of laptop and accessories. I don't take any additional bags as I travel overseas during my breaks and don't want check-in baggage hassles. I am a tradie so my tools are only taken to site once and then stored securely onsite while I am on break. My work clothes, boots, civilian clothes etc. are left on site in a locker, you are likely to need civilian clothes as many dry messes won't let you enter wearing work clothes for the nighttime meal. PS - you are a brave man taking a bottle of grog in your bag on a flight with the baggage handlers very careful way they handle bags 🙂

I have no experience in anything related to fifo but I I can easily learn. My only concern is that I am not an Australian and my English level is not really good. I have studied a totally different thing Compute Science but I want to get any fifo job before I proceed doing anything else. Do you think you could give an advice or something? I can see a solar farm worker or a drilles is a good options as a beginner. Also having a working holiday visa the best choice of foreigners is to start working in a farm since it is considered easier to be accepted there.
@Keithy_W
@Keithy_W 24 күн бұрын
G’day mate, I’d say your best bet is your search. “Entry Level mining roles” would have to be the most simple way into the industry. You won’t need any special skills, but you will have competition, so you want to be able to sell yourself and be happy to give anything a go (they will train you). Also look for “shutdown work”. Getting into the mines, they’ll be looking at workers willing to work longer-term, unless you can find a short contract job to suit how long you plan to be on the job.

@Keithy_W
@Keithy_W 10 ай бұрын
G’day mate, most companies pay for travel from certain destinations, however, if you’re flying from somewhere different (say Sydney to Perth), they’ll likely ask you fund your own flight to Perth (as an example). It will be single bedroom accomodation 99% of the time. Just a small room, bathroom and toilet.

G’day mate, it depends what type of sparky you want to be in the mines. There’s a few types, but don’t quote me on the names - I’ll go with the part of the site they work. There’s the machinery workshop - mechanical electrical technicians. Underground mine electricians - responsible for all electric happenings underground You could work in a workshop on the surface in a plant - surface electrical technician And last there’s the “jack of all trade” contractor electricians. That is where you come in on labour hire to perform electrical work wherever they may take you. You can use your imagination on what kind of work they might do. That’s a complete other story!

Ive just handed in my notice at my current job as a boilermaker in melbourne which i was with for the last few years and was a very stable job because i have recently gotten a offer for a shutdown boilermaker position. Im pretty nervous just wondering whats the things i should do and avoid on my first couple of swings. And also what are you views of people flying to bali or thailand on their time off?
@Keithy_W
@Keithy_W Жыл бұрын
Thanks mate! Much appreciated! Congrats on the shutdown job mate! You’ll meet heaps of people along the way - the main thing is to ask questions. If you don’t know where or what you need to be doing, ask! So many people stuff up by assuming they’re in the right place or working on the right bit of plant or machinery. If you buddy up with a host, they’ll show you the ropes of where and what you’re up to. As for flying to Bali, etc. you’ll need to be careful. It’s ok to have a “holiday” every now and then, but if your return flight gets grounded and you can’t get back, they’ll consider you unreliable. Best save the overseas flights for when you’re on leave and have time either side just in case!

@Keithy_W
@Keithy_W Ай бұрын
Thanks mate, much appreciated. That’s a good question. There will surely be a few mines offering an apprenticeship on FIFO. It might be a good idea to have a good google to see what you can find - I can’t say I’ve had this question before! I know often the mines try to move apprentices close to the site until they’ve done their time. Jump on google and see what you can find. Keep in mind that they generally try to get their apprentices before the start of the annual intakes. I reckon you’re on a winner, just keep at it and have a regular look on seek.com and some of the mining companies’ websites to see what you can find 👍🏻

Cheers Keithy. Just another question mate. What do FIFO diesel mechanics do with their toolbox. Is it kept on site. Or does it have to be transported every FIFO roster? Out of all the possible mining jobs, are diesel mechanics still in good demand with a lot of work available? Cheers for your previous detailed response as well
@Keithy_W
@Keithy_W Ай бұрын
If you’re on one site each roster, they will have a locker where you can keep stuff like your tool kits, that’ll save having to carry them each roster. Yes you’re right, diesel mechanics are a pretty good job to go for. Once you’re in - you’re in!
@Anthony-fq9ct
@Anthony-fq9ct Ай бұрын
Thanks again keithy. So with heavy diesel in the mining industry would they take someone with experience working on trucks like you see on the road, or are they after people who have been plant mechanics? Am I also right to assume that a lot of equipment in the mining industry not go electric anytime soon (as opposed to cars which are constantly changing)? Thanks again mate
@Keithy_W
@Keithy_W Ай бұрын
Good question mate. You won’t need to have experience operating machinery, as there are a lot of positions lately in the mining industry. You will still have to sell yourself though, as there’s still a market and they will look for the best candidates they can find. There is already quite a lot of electric mining equipment. There are heaps, in fact, but at this stage there are not millions of mines adapting them.

G’day mate, yes and no is the right answer here. Firstly, if hired in Australia for a mining job, you will have to do the VISA thing and live in Australia to be considered for a job in the industry. You will also require the skills to apply for whichever job you apply for as well - they do not simply employ people randomly. Skills play a very big part in finding work in the industry, plus there is quite a lot of competition for mining jobs. Just to be clear - if you got a job in the Australian mining industry, they will not pay workers to live in a different country. You will need to live in Australia.

Hey Ambar, apologies for taking so long to reply to you. The mining industry is good for women now. Many years ago it was rough, sexual gestures and inappropriate innuendos. In my 21yrs in the industry I’ve seen the change. That’s not to say it will happen at some places and potentially some time, but it’s certainly not the rape dungeon that 60-Minutes seem to be selling. These days you can report issues without fear of issue, you can speak up, and disciplinary action are enforced as needed. I hope that helps!
@Keithy_W
@Keithy_W 4 ай бұрын
@ivabozic1245 There’s so many jobs that women can also do. The only jobs limiting women are to do with vibrations that cause physical damage to parts of the anatomy that affect women. Things like bulldozers for example - they bounce and bump around like crazy and destroy the ladies sensitive parts (it’s not just blokes being sexist 😂)

You’d need to meet the trade requirements in Australia to get the full job, so I’d say there will be trade specific training to match, that would be the hardest part.
