I was a concreter and steel fixer of 15 years. In my medical images, I look like I’ve been in a car crash, so I (sadly) gave it away to give mining a go. I’ve been working in processing for a bit over a year now. In my last job I was lucky to be home 8 days a month. Wifey didn’t handle that too well because in the short time that I was home, I wasn’t really home. I was always chronically fatigued, injured and preparing to go back in a day or two. So perspectively, being away for 2 weeks is nothing when I’ll spend equal time at home. Wifey loves it! And as for catching up with mates, my mates don’t actually exist so that’s good too! The job itself isn’t too bad. It’s pretty cruisey. A good thing about it is where I’m at, us processing and crushing guys do all the loader ops as well so that’s pretty mint! Mining is something that I never wanted to get into previously. In fact I used to cringe at the thought. But now with the physical state I’m in, it’s pretty much given me a second chance at life. But I know that if I ever had my physical health back, I’d be out in a heartbeat and going back to where I came from. Good video mate! It’s good to hear about other people’s experiences other than mine. 🤙🏻

Hi Keithy thanks for busting all the myths. I did hear a story that at the airport all the taxi drivers were lining up to get a fifo worker in their cab thinking all fifo workers earn mega bucks and will give them a nice generous tip. As you said it’s not the case not everyone is 100k plus, only certain trades and skill base earn in excess of that.

@@Keithy_Wdo you think a backpacker can easily find a fifo occupation (I’ve seen some announces also for casual workers without hr license)? I’m deciding to come to Australia or not next November, my whv expires the first days of December but I’m not sure to come. I’m 35 and if I will not do this experience in Australia I will never do no more.. Thanks if you answer ✌️
@Keithy_W
@Keithy_W 9 ай бұрын
G’day mate, it’s unlikely you’ll find casual work in the mines, I’m sorry. To work on a mine site requires quite a lot of entry conditions, training and assurance before you can even begin work, so it would cost a mining company quite a lot to get you up to speed with the safety stuff before you even get the chance to work.

Do you think it would be possible to come from the UK for fifo on a working holiday visa and stay in hostels/explore on weeks off? Or do you need a permanent residence in Aus for fifo?
@Keithy_W
@Keithy_W 2 жыл бұрын
You’d be able to stay where you like in Australia and travel, provided you’re at the same airport each time to fly back to work. You may need to rent a P.O. Box to have an address if the employer wants to send mail. Where the mine flies from will dictate the city you’ll need to “base” yourself in.

Is automatic transmission car available to drive at mine site or is it entirely manual gear cars , is driving licence an essential requirement for electrical engineers?
@Keithy_W
@Keithy_W 2 жыл бұрын
G’day mate, most vehicles are manual, however, a lot of mining companies these days are ordering automatic vehicles for their fleets. That said, there are only a handful of vehicles that are automatic at the moment. A drivers licence is not 100% necessary for the role of electrical engineer, but it’s likely that someone with a drivers licence will be favourable over someone without.

@Keithy_W
@Keithy_W 10 ай бұрын
G’day mate, are you talking “local” as in Australia, or the town or city near the mine? I think the word “local experience” is pretty broad here! It does sound like they’re asking you to get a little bit of time and experienced in whichever role you’ve applied for. Or perhaps even some kind of training.

Hi Keith, I've watched quite a few of your mining based vids lately as I think the industry would suit me. Me and the fam are hoping to be over in Oz in 2024, we've already begun the visa process. The Mrs is already sorted with a job in healthcare, my current profession isn't on the desired skills list, so I'm hoping to get involved in something totally new. If the mining industry doesn't take unqualified workers, are there any quick courses I could do over here in England in prep for when I eventually do manage to get over there? Also, are there a few Poms that you know of that got themselves into the mining game? I imagine the banter can get lively at times, especially around world cups and the Ashes. Any advice is greatly appreciated mate, thanks.

G’day Mike, thanks for the comment mate! Good question mate, and congrats on the planning for the big move. Your last few months over there might not allow the time to get the qualification advantage when you get here. Do you have a general idea what you might like to do in the mines? There’s a broad range of things, and that will ultimately decide what kind of preparation you can do when you get here. There’s definitely a few poms in the mines - friendly banter when it comes to sport always add a bit of friendly rivalry at the bar!

G’day mate, good question. I’ll add my 0.02 but I’m sure there are plenty of lads and lasses who can add their opinions too. Isolation and how it’s dealt with is different to everyone. I remember when I was a young lad and had no partner, I spent a lot of time on forums. I have always been interested in mechanics and cars, so I tinkered with my Torana and spent my time after work looking at forums when I was away from home. I’ve made friends out at the mines who have become mates at home, likewise I’ve also made new mates from here too. It’s all what you make of it. I’m sure you’ll definitely make some great new mates when you get into the game.

It depends on the person mate. If you and the family don’t do well away from each other, it’s not worth it. If you and the family are ok with time apart, it works well. You have long periods of time home rather than just weekends, so you can do more with family and any little projects you have going on at home. Long rosters hurt relationships though. If you’re away for more than a week/two at a time it can be negative for wife/partner/children. You’d have to weigh up the pro’s and con’s with your situation.

I don’t doubt you, but if I go around in my videos telling people they’ll start on 100k, and they get in on 75k, I won’t have too many happy viewers. Not to mention that every mine and every mining company is different. Likewise for laundry and food facilities. Smaller mines and development camps are much less a hotel, and more of a bush camp. There are many scales to think about. Like yourself, I’m at 20yrs in the game too, it’s good to hear you’ve put in the hard years too 👌🏼 I appreciate your comments mate 👍🏻

Even time rosters do exist and bhp are moving all their sites to 8/6 which is pretty close to even time and in my experience the best roster. Relationships are terrible on anything longer than 8/6 rosters...sorry but that's my experience.
