Fighter Jet Ejection Seat Slow Mo - Rocket Sled Test At USAF High Speed Test Track

An ejection seat is a system used to rescue the pilot of an airplane in an emergency. Usually, the seat is propelled from the plane by explosives or rockets. Once off the plane, the ejection seat's descend is controlled by using a parachute.
Here is a video showing an ejection seat test mission conducted by the USAF. There are very few missions requiring years of planning and preparation, only to be accomplished in less than six seconds. There are even fewer facilities where such a mission can take place. The Holloman High Speed Test Track (HHSTT) is a facility that enables test scientists and engineers to meet both of the above criteria. Tests on the track provide data on problems that cannot be solved by other ground test means. The tests are conducted by securing the ejection seat to a rocket-propelled sled and launching the sled to a speed identical to that of which a pilot will encounter in an actual flight.

Good times. Worked as a test engineer for McDonnell-Douglas Escape Systems Division in the early 90s. Project was Advanced Recovery Sequencer (ARS)...added a couple more modes to the seat's digital control system for broadening the envelope. Spent a few months at Holloman for 0-0 and sled tests, then went to China Lake for flight tests. At the beginning you see the air speed sensor probes on either side of the headrest pop out...these were fixed in original versions of the ACES but requirements for larger helmets (thats a long story but you can see current ones at 1:00) and canopy penetration required the sensors to stick out further. We developed that at the same time as the ARS. The test at :45 is a relatively slow speed test because you see the pilot's parachute box deploying first. Test at :53 is higher speed as you see the seat drogue deploying first...slows the seat down before deploying the pilot's chute. Watch some of the scenes closely and you can see the difference between seat drogue deployment first and pilot's chute deploying first. The last sequence shows a separate seat chute deploying as the the pilot separates...this is used only during testing to allow recovery of the seat for analysis.

1983 HS grad from Alamo. I actually shook the hand of Dr Stapp during career day at the Sr HS. He retired as AF Col that was also the engineer and designer of what the world now calls "test dummies". He first tested everything on himself; and was nearly killed doing so. His sled is now at the International Space Hall of Fame against the hill in Alamogordo. Retired Col Kittinger held the longest freefall record (Long Lonely Leap), and Col Stapp (Rocket Sled Test). It was the greatest honor of history I ever felt.

Every so often we had a TCTO/preventative maintenance item we did changing out a fire bottle squib in the nose wheel well. The discharge of the rocket motor for the ejection capsule was right in your face. Needless to say it was a little concerning with you face right there. 😮

I’m curious if the pilots land faster than a typical parachute landing. I understand a standard parachute landing is the equivalent of jumping off a four foot high table.
@mofo7689
@mofo7689 2 жыл бұрын
You leave an aircraft traveling at a horizontal speed. The parachute opens VERY quick because the air is forced into the chute at a sideways angle. After maybe 100 feet of returning the the ground, the sideways speed has bled off and you land the same way as jumping from a tall building. Under ideal conditions, it is just like the 3 meter board into a swimming pool.
@jimrockfish1875
@jimrockfish1875 2 жыл бұрын
@@mofo7689 I was thinking vertical and based on the assumption the chutes spend less time open compared to a typical jump so have less time to slow the decent although the pilots fall from a lower altitude. The question of horizontal speed is interesting too.

It's all pyrotechnics. The ejection seat is practically a collection of bombs which go off in a controlled fashion. When I worked in the engineering dept, we all had "bombs" in our desk drawers and from time to time management would realize it and they'd purge our desk drawers of the pyrotechnic devices... It's wonder we didn't all blow up.
