This is my understanding as well. The Spitfire was known for having very good gliding characteristics and there are a few anecdotes of them coasting for many miles with damaged engines or no power. That being said, it's certainly an exaggeration that Tom Hardy, already being at such a low altitude, would have been able to turn and maneuver to shoot down the Stuka and still have airspeed and altitude left to glide elegantly to the end of the beach. Theoretically possible? Yes, maybe, at the very limits of natural physics. Not very likely though. To Jello's point, it would have made much more sense to either immediately ditch at the waterline or go in for a quick belly landing on the beach nearer the ships. But that would have required an undignified trashing of the plane, and we can all agree that the only proper way to dispose of a Spitfire is to light it up with a flare gun and stand heroically silhouetted in the flames as it burns :)

What about reversing direction while gliding?

@@Thoreaux Its possible and they in fact train you to do it at flight schools but it is at the cost of a couple hundred feet. So in this guys case, unlikely he'd be able to complete a full 180, given more altitude, absolutely

​@@Thoreaux When you turn a plane, you are splitting the lift the wing generates into a horizontal and a vertical component. The more you bank, the more horizontal lift is generated and the less vertical lift. Turning will also increase your angle of attack and create more drag, slowing you further. If you get too slow, air will no longer adhere to the wing and you lose all lift. That's a stall. At the altitude and speed he was flying, there's no way he could have recovered in time and he would have just nose dived. He used his last maneuver by taking out the Stuka, so he had to glide down.

I thought it was weird that he thought that the pilot should have attempted to ditch at about 200 or so feet... not the best idea

The Spitfire was a very aerodynamically clean design with an impressive glide ratio, but if you lose the engine at 500 feet as shown in the film that will maybe buy you a handful of seconds at most. At that altitude you are going to be on the ground within a minute, these planes didn't defy physics. I know there was a real Spitfire pilot that landed gear up on the beach at Dunkirk after he was hit, but pretty sure he didn't glide for an hour and shoot down a Stuka in the process.

In "Iron Eagle" the USAF declined to co-operate, so, they went to Israel. The IAF was happy to lend their full co-operation.

And even more to the point, that Spitfire that crashed on the beach in real life is the one IN THE MOVIE. It was recovered in the 1970s, returned to England, restored to flying order and they portrayed the action of the plane, WITH the plane. Crazy, right? The only difference is, the actual pilot didn't burn it. It sat on the beach until sand buried it.

Try being up close to the MV-22 Osprey. Up close its incredible but flying overhead it adds the blades beating the air into submission. BTW I’m a USN/USMC flight test engineer so early in my career I did have experience with weapons testing on the AV-8B.

Even though it helped them, they are not proud of that movie, in fact, another guy that reviewed airplane movies literally said that if anybody mentions that movie, they get a $50 fine, apparently they have to buy everybody drinks and also, apparently all of their nicknames are because they did something stupid or embarrassing, so probably not "Iceman" "maverick" or anything like that.
