Have you guys seen the old black n white video i think of ww2 or Korea of the B17 flyby. They did it twice because they were so low, they were below the flight deck that no one even seen them in time to film it, so they did a 2nd pass and told them where to look. It's crazy seeing those flying fortresses that fast and that low below the carriers deck

I said this to someone else; The reason Top Gun used F-18's is because there were no 2 Seater F-35's for the Actors to Fly in, as Tom Cruise wanted; So my question is; how the whole film have played out with F-35's. In all likelihood they wouldn't have been shot down; so how would the Final Fight have gone in F-35's had the Su-57's been nearer?

Yeah, Hangman didn't need a character arc. He was never a bad guy, he's just way overconfident and had a habit of leaving the plane he was watching to go after the kill. In this case he was the perfect guy to fly protection for them because he's almost as good as Maverick in a dogfight situation and it's all 1 v 1 in this situation. He got the kill, saved the 2 guys he felt were his rivals, and got bragging rights. That's exactly how he'd act in that situation with what we know about him from the movie.

One of my biggest disappointments in the script was the ending on deck, hugged it out. “Thank you for saving my life”, why didn’t they have him reply “Bulls*hit thank you for saving mine”? As for the P51, idk why everyone is getting up in arms over it being an airforce plane in a navy movie. In terms of screen presence it’s definitely more iconic to the general public than a corsair. The cost for those are more unrealistic than him flying one, i’m going with Mav having restored or built a kit version (still pretty expensive tho). Still i think you have to compare the two endings to the two themes of the movies. In the original Mav is going off to continue his career flying with the best. In this sequel he’s basically now retired and he finally gets the family that he avoided when he was flying for the navy. Just like the first movie it’s showing the next step in his life, flying off into the sunset. I think it makes perfect sense, even music wise. In a sense he’s no longer Maverick, he’s become just Pete Mitchell again…
@thomasvleminckx
@thomasvleminckx Жыл бұрын
Spot on. Top Gun is about Top Gun, Top Gun: Maverick is about Maverick. The endings make perfect sense. Also I doubt most regular people are even aware Mustangs are Air Force and not Navy. Doubt they even make a distinction between the two at all.

Great move and great comments guys. Maybe the Darkstar didn't need to be in it, but dang! that is a beautiful fuselage. Some shots were too close, but in the old days, non-active duty friends would sometimes slip in an unauthorized maneuver or two like giving their F-105 leader a surprise "Hot Nose" rejoin. Lead calls for a straight-ahead join off the range and is head down busy getting the clearance while his wingman, at 550K, would come under him and pull up while lighting the hard light afterburner so lead would have a face full of jet and a hard light afterburner explosion. It would shake the canopy and knock your feet off the rudder peddles. What a thrill! A training rule might have been bent but I think the only danger was giving the leader a heart attack. There was no chapter in the rule book about doing or not doing a Hot Nose Rejoin. I can't find any demonstrations on the internet so it will just have to be a memory. It was not uncommon to get the wing rock to join the flight of four into fingertip during RTB from the range and do barrel roll descents from cruise altitude down to initial. My first time flying this I was four and a brown bar, I was so excited and laughed so hard throughout the rolls. I couldn't believe we were doing it, but it was safe, just upside down. I tried it with a flight of two while on active duty and the wingman had a fit. We sometimes did a low-level to the range and did a popup to HADB in the F-16. I was surprised that it was almost like Maverick's attack sans the mountains. It surprised the range officer. Under certain circumstances, it might be a viable tactic. One of the founders of air combat said, "Flexibility is the key to Air Power." After we retired, my SQ/CC said in his day it was not uncommon to fly under bridges in his F-84. I bet there are plenty of stories out there where the pilots have done some pretty exciting things like in the movie or very close to it. There were lots of flybys done over girlfriend's or family member's houses. Some didn't turn out so well, unfortunately. None of it is permitted these days. None of it was "permitted" in those days either. They weren't very tactical, but they sure were fun and it did teach you to think so in a way they were tactical. I am about to watch my copy of Maverick for the seventh time. It does keep getting better. We all wish we could do it again. I have heard some stories from the old days by Navy pilots about landing from the back side of a loop or Immelmen. I had never seen it before, but it sure sounded interesting. I don't know the copyright rules and I never notice links on KZfaq and I can't read the copyright so the credit to them. If you search for this subject. INCREDIBLE Landing Maneuver With The Rafale! There is a good chance you will find a very short video of a Rafale flying an Immelman to a landing, a beautiful stunt. It would be a typical Maverick maneuver. Maybe it will show up in TOPGUN 3. Maybe you two guys will get a chance for another fini flight and you could end it this way and in fingertip.

Loved watching your critique. Thanks for sharing your expertise and humor. I would really like to see you interview the technical advisors on the film. It would be very entertaining to hear the internal give and take between the director/screenwriter and the technical advisors. The sad part is a lot of what you pointed out would be easy to fix without much effort or impact to the plot.

Darn, someone beat me to it but yeah AMRAAM shot from the fuselage is a really cool detail harder to see when the F-18 breaks away from the Tomcat and shows its belly but it is also missing in that shot as well. This is a really nice detail and also gives us reason to suspect that he was carrying 2 Aim-9X, 6 Aim-120 AMRAAMs, 2 GBU 24 Paveway IIIs, not to mention the external fuel tanks. The guy was flying heavy but the only AMRAAM fired in the movie is a cool thought.

I don't really understand the complaints about the Mustang not being a Navy aircraft. Would a retired Navy pilot really turn up their nose at any WWII aircraft that wasn't Navy? Besides, privately owned F4U Corsairs and F6F Hellcats are far more rare than P-51s, and are probably even more expensive to buy.

I’ve noticed that in everything where there’s a character named “Admiral Cain” the person has been a total tool, psycho or somehow an antagonist. But the one that takes the cake for me is Admiral Helena Cain from BSG played by Michelle Forbes, Ed Harris takes a very close #2 spot behind her IMO 😂

Re Rooster, doesn't this happen all the time in life? Don't tell me you have never been in or seen a similar situation. The P-51 tax break is meaningless unless you bother to check its ownership structure. The natural reason for it in the movie is because Tom Cruise knows how important Top Gun (1986) and its legacy mean to him, and he wants to include everything he loves about aviation in the sequel.

To be completely fair, Maverick himself, who did fly, was trained, and his five kills were in F-14s so the guy is more than at home in that old bird, also forgot to check if the ejection seats were armed. So joke is on both.

@@gryphon1342 For the ground scenes, they used F-14A 159631 from a museum in San Diego. The aircraft was partially restored to have enough hydraulics for canopy opening and closing and wings unfolding/folding. They even painted it to look like the one in the movie including the rogue nation insignia (the aircraft already had a black based tail due to being a high visibility squadron bird). They towed it for the taxiing scenes. All the cockpit footage is from that actual plane.

Variable geometry apparently was in my future when I enlisted in the AF (yes dad approved) and became an F-111 maintainer and then AF ATC after they retired the airframe. It brings me back to the days of watching movies in the dayroom or with my dad, pointing out the finer details that were "conjecture" for the sake of good entertainment. But at the end of the day was entertaining. Cheers to you two for sharing.. Cleared off, monitor guard and report back up. JV - JohnnyVector

The part that annoys me the most is that the movie implies Pete and Penny have had "on and off" flings before. Penny makes a point of this, and tells Pete not to even try this time. Then we get character development, they inevitably get back together, and Pete promises Penny he will *never leave her again*. Their relationship blossoms. The finale happens, Pete goes to visit Penny after the mission. She's gone sailing. So he sticks around until she gets back, right? It's only a day or so... Haha, nope! Ain't no one got time for that, that Mustang won't fix itself. He just abandons her again without saying a word and heads back to the desert. Only reason we got a happy ending is because Penny went after him

I think you are misunderstanding how long a sailing trip lasts. The racing boat featured in the film has a kitchen, crew bunks, etc. They could be out for a week for all Maverick knows. Is he supposed to sleep in the bar indefinitely? Of course not. He leaves a message and waits to hear back.

My take on Hangman (FWIW) I didn’t really pick up on this until the third or 4th time watching. With an air to air kill, he’s a true air to air combat vet. So he suffers no fools, especially over egoed hot shots that did well in training, maybe dropped bombs but probably haven’t seen SAMs or enemy air threat. So they haven’t seen the monster like him. He wants to be team lead because he freaking wants to come home. Of course there are reindeer games and posturing and some cringe dialogue, but at the base is that Hangman has zero confidence in his teammates because they have no idea what they are into. That’s why he can be so bold to a kooky old has been O6 with a 4 star buddy. He knows lives are on the line for real and DGAF. Blood >career. but three key events: complete his arc. 1. Mav does the practice bomb run mission. Hangman is like - ok this guy is for real, and still has IT. 2. He meets up with rooster just before launch and says “give ‘em hell” .? Acknowledging We aren’t in the locker room anymore, we are on the same field, same team. He is totally thrilled when they hit the target. Reminds me of Similar scene in Glory between two rival units when the one pulled the tough job of leading the assault. We go at each other in training, but when the bullets fly, I am your 6. 3. He launches and smokes the Felon, and while he has fun with it, he doesn’t rub it in. Am I projecting onto him a bit as a combat vet, probably. But When the training calendar is replaced by a two way live fire, bullshit walks. I learned this as a cherry 2LT trying to lead a platoon of returning Mogadishu vets, and I saw it as an O4 with time in country taking new arrivals on adventures in Iraq, including an O6. Bottom line, hangman earned the right to be a dick but when shit got real, he was the best pilot and teammate you could hope for. I really liked that character.
