Just a note, 30mm canons are not necessarily an advantage in a dogfight. The US 20mm were generally better in that regard.

I should have clarified that they were more "powerful". You're right, the higher rate of fire on the 20mms made them deadlier against fighters and were a huge step up from the 50 cals on F-86s. One hit from a 37mm would normally turn a fighter into paste though, but it took a hell of a good pilot to land that kind of hit.

In other words, bigger numbers and firepower look good on paper but not necessarily in practice. Something that many tankies can't seem to grasp.

MiG-15 guns have really shitty velocity They were really only meant for killing bombers.

20MM guns are also able to bring more ammo, letting you stay in a fight longer. Again, big heavy calibre guns sound great until you find out you have less than 100 round per gun and they are gone in just two or three bursts

I'm happy they were able to get the Navy Cross to Captain Williams. Alone with 7 MiGs in a rolling 35 minute dogfight in an "inferior" airframe, I just wish more people knew of his story.

Not only the fight, but the landing was phenomenal. The Carrier captain had to actually line up for the jet, not the other way round, it was that busted. Broken tail meant he only had ailerons to work with iirc.

To an extent it's also the plane (after all, how else did Iran wipe out the Iraqi Air Force during the '80 war, or how the '91 Kuwait invasion ended in total coalition victory), but combined with better tactics and training, you can take on anything the opfor throws

@@fightertales it go to a point that there were no fighter patrols to cover the retreating north Korean army as they had I think only 5 working yaks at one point due to poor maintenance and the one handed pump slap they go to the face in the form of un jets. Of course this changed when the mig arrived to tip the scales.

And here i thought that thise victories are things only from games like war thunder where once i survived 1v5 in rb since my teammate decided to yeet once help came, but here comes actual human being doing better score than i did in some computer multiplayer game and all of that irl, and after that he landed in that crippled aircraft history is sometimes filled with people so amazing that it sounds like quite bad self insert fanfiction rather than reality

@@fightertales it reminds me of Viliam Pylkas, infantryman who managed to score 15-70 kills in single firefight and survive being shot in the head and continue to unload mags from his suomi. If somebody told me that warstory i would laugh at them, but then you see the documents and medal he got for it

What an aviator! Just checked and Capt. Williams in still indeed living, and apparently living very well. It makes me very happy to know that there are probably still sailors and pilots who served under, and learned from this incredible man. I’ll definitely be raising a glass in his honor tonight.

what you didn't mention was that William's plane was so damaged that he had to have the ship's commander alter the course of the carrier so he could land. He literally had no ability to steer and had one chance to land.

Migs 15 cannons choice was dictated by its role, shooting down strategic bombers. Its guns were inferior in dogfighting to american 20mm

The F-14 has to be the most (insert Team America: world police soundtrack) America to ever fly...its a big aircraft, it's quite fast, it's time consuming and expensive to maintain, and capable of carrying, in long range stand off weapons, the total of some countries GDP...it's one hell of a platform.
