Drop techniques are extremely popular at all levels of Judo. Here is a way of countering poorly executed drop techniques.
This video is taken from one of my regular sessions at Camberley Judo Club, as such the input and advice come directly watching how everyone is getting on with the techniques.
Apologies for the image quality and sound, it is poorer than normal.

I have never seen it done like this, it is something I used to use a lot in competition and have worked on over the years.

@@thejudocoach oki doke if it works don't fix it. I just use as a general rule the premise if it's not used in top level competition then there's PROBABLY a good reason for that...

@@thejudocoach like the armspin. Never seen in Judo. Would it work? If not, why not? kzfaq.info/get/bejne/nJyYlaqrx8uWZXk.html My guess is it would work... Once, MAYBE. Then never again.

There are so many things and so many techniques this would have applied to ‘until someone done it’. Judo is not a simple yes and no. There are techniques that would work in light weight judo and not in heavy weight judo (and vice versa). With judo and working on techniques new and old you have to focus on principles of judo. It is said knowledge is everything we know and imagination is everything we are yet to know. You also need to understand that the class I am teaching in most of these videos are between 12 & 18 my job is not only teach them good judo but to inspire them to be creative, teach them how interesting judo can be and don’t be afraid to try new things.

@@thejudocoach what I'm interested in is Judo that works. No theories or guesses. Judo is a high IQ sport and THE worst thing is the 'let's throw a 100.000 techniques at them and see what sticks' approach. So many techniques taught on KZfaq will basically never work in real life. That is misleading at best.

It works only if the shoulder throw is not properly executed

well thanks for stating the obvious. If the throw is well executed _and_ well timed, you are being thrown, not standing there thinking about countering. This is meant t punish people who spam drop throws in order to _prevent_ you from doing real judo in the first place. This may sound weird but in competition it's VERY common for people to do anything they can to prevent you from even having the _possibility_ of doing anything, particularly if they are winning on points and just want the clock to run out. Also, people do false drop seoi attempts all the time in order to get out of losing grips, or not stepping out of the mat. Those _eventually_ get penalized, but only if it's obvious and/or done multiple times.
