Hanyu Yuzuru's 3A and most jumps are fully integrated with beautiful transitions in and out of the jumps and that's what makes his skating really special. If you just started watching him and wonder why his skating looks so different from all other skaters, we actually made a series of video explaining that. The most notable of Yuzuru's 3A is that the back counter entry is immediate and straight-up without preparatory steps, and the smoother landing without breaking the upper body balance. Yuzuru is the only one that studied the "kinetics" and the human body mechanics to find out the best and possible way to jump 4.5A on the ice.

@@FigureSkatingFan Yes! That is the reason that I am attracted to his performances. I haven't known his name, his skating, until I "happened to see him skating" at the Olympic games, but almost immediately, I noticed that every element of his skating, every element of his body movement, every element of his body, was so beautiful, so natural, so elegant, and so featherly. When watching other skaters jumping and spinning or stepping, the differences are so obvious. Yuzuru has indeed natural "instinct" to combine all the transitions and choreography with each jump and each spin, with his fingures, arms, legs. His former coach, Nanami Abe was the one that taught him to keep his "5 senses" into all the corners of his body while skating.

He lands 4A or not, he is trying to find out how to do it. It is an important investigation for defining the limits of human beings. And he is not doing it secretly, he is sharing his experience with public. He is a scientist in my eyes. If he retires before he manages to jump it, we need to wait for another decade or century to someone to study his notes and execute it but they have to be in a good shape as much as Yuzuru first and know their body, strenghts etc. So it doesn’t look like possible in 2020s to me… they need to study physics and anatomy first 😬

@@harumih.3727 Probably why I can find other skaters boring, they just skate along the ice and you can see them thinking when they're about to jump. Yuzuru values the rest of his performance as much as his jumps and you can see the effort he puts into choreography and telling the story. He always mixes it up to make it interesting. I feel like other skaters are more concerned with what will get them points than entertaining the crowd with artistry.

Yuzuru pushed the sport forward with his 4A attempts. And made it possible for Illia Malinin to land the first 4A clean and get it ratified. They both played a huge role in the 4A being achieved. Just Because Illia technically gets the credit for being the first doesn't diminish what Yuzuru did

Yuzu really spoils you with his transitions and jump entry and exits. Even when other skaters are hitting quads, half the time I feel like "dear god, you've been on approach for 15 seconds. Let's hurry it up!" Yuzu barely wastes a second of his programs on just jump prep. It's also shows a great deal of confidence since the extended prep time allows you to mentally prepare and check your balance first.

That is why a 4A should get the highest score, at least 12 points for the base value. But Yuzu doesn't do it for points. @@lookatthat2438 I mean even before 2018 the 4A and 4Lz were too close in base value. 4A was 15.00 and 4Lz was 13.60: that's only 1.4 of a difference in points which is ridiculous. Now it's even worse and there's only 1 point separating them but tbh I don't buy that it was because of Yuzuru (just sounds like one of those silly fan conspiracy theories), I think the ISU were just trying to give less weight to Quads in general, even the 4Lz, 4F and 4Lo are all very close in base value nowadays compared to before. But yeah, if the 3A is worth 2.1 points more than a 3Lz there's definitely no excuse for the 4A not being worth *at least* 13.6 points. They really need to fix that 'cause the 4A isn't even worth the effort unless you're someone like Yuzuru who just wants to land it to fulfil a personal goal/dream rather than to win. I have a feeling that in order for the 4A BV to be raised: someone is going to have to land it and prove it is possible. I'd love for it to be Yuzu.

@@MrSpaceRaptor oh I dont exactly believe that the score value change because of Yuzuru, I just thought it was a funny how Yuzuru went 'Im going for the 4A' and a few days/weeks later the ISU announced the new base value, I dont know I found it funny, but its probably just a coincidence, decisions like this take months before getting the green light 'I think the ISU were just trying to give less weight to Quads in general' Probably, but they are doing an awful job at that by rewarding high PCS because of the Quads. Look at the US skaters as an example, Nathan and Vincent sometimes get similar PCS like Jason, and theres no way their skills are similar, Jason is so much better than the other two in that area but because they have quads their pcs are high (lets not even start with the goe). So if they actually want quads to weight less they need to start doing some serious changes, separating the TES and PCS judging is a good start, but thats a combo for another day lol

As someone who's just managed to do three turns on ice and still figuring out how to do the 6 difficult steps, can't imagine how he manages to jump a 3A out of counter and still have room for those flashy moves like kicks or twizzle etc, on the same foot. It’s interesting that on this video, he started landing a beautiful 3A with a difficult entry (spread eagle) in 2012. It took him 4 years from the 2008 JWC to reach a stable level. By 2014, he has mastered the 3A and can basically do it with any entry/exit he wants. That’s a six year journey from an unstable 3A to a Yuzuru Hanyu-level 3A. We can consider his experience as a competitive skater and his natural aptitude to land axel jumps as positive factors that can balance out the difficultly of a 4A jump. If these factors could somehow relatively place him in the same starting point as when he started learning the 3A, we can predict that his 4A journey from unstable to stable to Yuzuru Hanyu-level would also roughly take the same amount of time. That said, we might not see it in the 2022 Beijing Olympics and there’s definitely hope that he won’t retire anytime soon. Will definitely continue to pray and hope that he stays healthy and injury-free throughout his 4A journey. 😊🙏🏻

Yes, "integration" is what makes Yuzuru a perfect package skater. He integrates every element of skating techniques into the music flow, creating one flawless, continuous line of music theme. Other skaters show clearly a preparation of jumping and try to keep balance of the upper body by immediately putting a leg on the ice. Yuzuru keeps the 3A jump and rotation and landing all in one leg, enabling the next turn or twizzles or steps to be a part of choreography.

Thank you for this video. I watched the Olympic Men's single, without knowing any of the technique and jump types. But I could just tell Yuzuru's skating felt different than the other Olympian athletes. His performance was just smoother and refined somehow. Now after watching this and learning all the jump types, and it all makes sense now. The short prep time before triple axel, and the ability to do another step right after without the need to re-stabilize is not just rare, but CAN ONLY BE DONE BY HIM consistently. He is the GOAT and I don't see anyone else catching up to this man's talent in terms of performance anytime soon.

Honestly, I’m new to skating but when i saw one of his routines, for some reason i’m drawn to him bcs he moves fluidly and artistically when he skates, i didn’t really know the technical mastery behind what he was doing and didn’t appreciate much of it bcs he makes it look natural and easy. As if every skater could do that. Learning this made me even more impressed and understand just why he’s such a popular and well-acknowledged figure in skating. Truly a legend.

Thanks for this video. Very clear. I have often heard commentators mentioning the entries and exits but now i can see what they mean. I always wondered why other skaters had to look behind them when lining up to do the 3A. And that Illusion save in LMEY? That was gobsmackingly shocking! The core on this bloke must be like titanium. I sincerely hope that Yuzu can achieve 4A and also inside his program in a way that fits the music and story. There is just something about Ten to Chi to right from the beginning that felt special. The fact that he tried to jump 4A DURING a competition practice, is already so amazing in and of itself. [EDIT] I think some people misunderstood my comment. I mean, he did not just attempted 4A on WTT. When I said 'during a competition practice', I was referring to the time when he in fact, attempted it on op of free skate in GPF 2019. My mistake.

@@creativebodyflying Didn't he attempted 4A before fs? By the way, in his interview, he said if his coaches were there, he wouldn't do it since he would've been stopped, but their absence might've added to his resolve in doing it. As an athlete myself, not having your coach beside you can make you feel hopeless and alone, yet at the same time, strengthen your resolve to do what you want to do--even risking it--for the purpose of improving and seeing how far have you gone to. I'm actually 51-49 on worry and relief (in a sense where he was at least able to practice it in a competition period) that his coach weren't their, with the odds being the latter. Though if it resulted in a critical injury, I would think it was better had he not tried it that time.

I'm a hockey player, and the one time I tried figure skates for fun, I tripped SO many times on the pick. Even though I don't think I could ever learn figure skating while I continued hockey, I love watching figure skaters because of how beautiful the sport is. Watching incredible figure skaters is absolutely breathtaking and indescribably amazing -- seeing how easily and how naturally these awesome tricks and spins I could never do come to them. I was once told by my coach that skating needed to be as natural to me as walking barefoot. I can see what they meant as I watch Yuzuru.

Honestly I can't say for other jumps or elements, but at least this triple Axels --> It really deserves maximum GOE everytime!! Like, what else do you expect a skater to do?! And more than that, when he uses the back counter entry and the choreo / twizzle exit, if they give him +5 GOE, for all other skaters who never include any transition in and out of the jump, they shouldn't give anything more than +3 GOE for those.. That's what I feel is fair. Because it's really that much more difficult!

I'm new to the figure skating world. I'm grateful for this video because I couldn't explain why Yuzu's jumps always looked prettier and more graceful and effortless than any other skater I've seen. It is disturbing to me that the ISU is not giving him the recognition he deserves. There is some really unfair bureaucracy and politics involved. What they did to Yuna Kim is disheartening and unfair but at least the whole world seems to know that she was robbed of her rightful gold in Sochi in 2014. And they're doing it to Yuzu too! He deserves a full GOE for his 3A. I don't understand what more they want him to do. Sprout wings and start sprinkling fairy dust in the arena? I also do not understand how judges who have been found to be fixing competitions get away with barely a slap on the wrist? The sheer disrespect to these athletes who devote their entire existence to their sport is unreal. Judges who do this should be banned for life from participating in competition. ANY COMPETITION. As for Yuzu, he scares me a little bit. He said himself that "Figure Skating is a sport whereby even if you recover from your injury and your injury heals, it doesn't mean you can skate as well as you could prior to that injury." He has such fighting spirit, I think it's one of the many things about him that inspires so much love from fans. And thing about loving him quite irrationally is that you don't want to ever see him lose. You don't want to ever see him fall. And perhaps unfairly, you want him to *_win always._* You want him to be the best always. Which kind of a slap to the face for me because that is not this world at all. This world is competitive, its a race against time, a race against injury, a race against newer, younger competitors each year. Some commentators feel the need to bring up Nathan Chen when they talk about Yuzu and it irritates the bejesus out of me. Don't compare him to Chen because there is no comparison. Yuzu is yuzu. The fact that he doesn't care about 4A's low BV means that he is not playing by any rulebook but his own. He may use the energy and intense competition to drive him forward but the only one he competing against is himself. I am sure there was some risk involved in his thesis to use motion capture tech to revolutionize the scoring in figure skating. Because it subtly calls out the ISU's current methods and shortfalls. Its a bold move for someone who is still a competitive figure skater and would've been safer to do after his retirement. It will also make it easier for fans to be able to tell when the judging has been unfair. I want to support the things he decides autonomously. I hope he stays strong and healthy and whole in his pursuit to conquer 4A. (I'm still scared though, so scared) If anyone can do it, it's him definitely (and probably Nathan Chen, even if I hate to admit it lol). At the end of it all, nothing can diminish the mark he has made in the figure skating world. What he has done is important. Even outside of the ice rink. I noticed how the younger Japanese skaters look up to him in competitions. They imitate the way he always folds his country's flag instead balling it up like the other competitors. They look to him for cues on how they should act as a sportsman, as a countryman, as a public figure and its thrilling to see the impact he has. One day, if the ISU ever has the balls in employ motion capture tech to assist in judging, it will be because the idea was first presented and explored by one Yuzuru Hanyu and I can't wait for that day.

Honestly that 3A in WTT SP by Hanyu remains the most memorable moment for more figure skating fans. It's that spectacular!! 😆💪 As for the 4A, it seems ISU really wants to discourage skaters from trying it. Some fans agree some don't. I don't speak for all, but for me it's really unfair. It's kinda like when they host a marathon, they give 1 point for every 1km run. And when the athlete reach 42km, they started to give only 0.1 point for every extra 1 km --> saying "That's don't dangerous. Stop. no more trying"
@benbailey159bb
@benbailey159bb 3 жыл бұрын
The 4A base value is nothing to do with Hanyu that's just what it ended up as when they recalibrated the CoP. Originally 4A had a base value of 15.0 with 3.6 added for a +3 equals a maximum of 18.6. They then divided that by 1.5 and got a base value of 12.4 which if you got a +5 on would equal 18.6, i.e the same maximum as before. Actually as they set it as 12.5 not 12.4 the maximum for it is fractionally higher since 2018. The problem with having the base value too high for it could create a similar problem to what promted the base valur/GOE recalibration. Skaters falling on 4Lz were getting more points that was possible for the most perfect 3Lz possible so skaters like Kolyada were doing 4Lz in the SP, falling, and still getting a massive score. That's why they changed things post 2018 and why the base value for 4A isn't higher.

I am really inspired by the persistence and determination of Yuzuru Hanyu. Everybody knows that quad axel is a really really really hard jump but no one can stop him from pursuing his dream. I was touched that even though he already made many histories in the field of figure skating, he still finding the meaning of his existence in the field. Gosh! How can I hate this man? No one because everybody loves him. And I believe that he will land the 4A! Ganbatte Yuzu!

Thanks so much for explaining so clearly what makes his 3A special. I knew his transitions, ice coverage and entrance/exits were good but now I can see why he's better than everyone else! Love the music too. I feel like if he can do 3A so easily (even from a standing start on the ground!?) than he will be the one to nail the 4A!!
