The idea that people would react to a highly transmissible airborne disease with a 100% mortality rate by wearing ill-fitting dust masks which don't even remotely filter out the disease while leaving their eyes completely bare to the the world and maintaining absurd half-measures solely to feel like they're doing something to keep themselves safe is... actually entirely realistic. If you're planning on avoiding exposure in this situation, go big or go home.

the section of this movie with the father and his little girl was heartbreaking. To have to watch your child slowly succumb to a disease and know that you can't do anything, but you still have to be a parent and make them feel safe and make sure they're not alone......makes me tear up

@@filmcomicsexplained If he had done that earlier with the father and daughter, all 4 of them would have lived. His only goal at that point is to get his group to safety. Can't fault him for that or you would need to fault the father of the infected daughter for doing the exact same thing. It's grim but that's the truth in a world where there is an airborne 100% deadly virus.
@filmcomicsexplained

Yeah but you said he did nothing wrong. There is something with murder is all. There's a big difference from driving away from someone that is infected and shooting uninfected people that have done nothing to you. I remember this film. I watched it through to the end. It left an impact. I still ponder on it today from time to time. My main criticism was the writing. The incident involving the sick child that infects the girlfriend was the ending of the film effectively... at that point I felt as though the ending was essentially spoiled and the only unknown was how many others in the group are going to get taken out along the way. I was also a bit disappointed that the only route that the director could take to introduce a new conflict was one of the group blatantly breaking the rules... I.e. 'because they are stupid' trope. It ran very much like a classic teen slasher of the 80s... where the hunted group of unarmed numbskulls decides to split up, or to go and investigate the creepy house that is OBVIOUSLY the lair of the homicidal murderer without calling for help. It just felt so worn out. That was a real shame. Otherwise it held my attention.

This movie's realistic depiction of a global pandemic is really only surpassed by Contagion. I only have 2 gripes with the movie. 1. No virus is 100% fatal. There will always be some segment of the population, through some evolutionary quirk, that will be immune. Approximately 10% of population in Europe is naturally immune to HIV. 2. Is that an incubation period of a few hours is FAR too short for a virus to be able to become a pandemic. If symptoms appear so quickly it makes isolation and contact tracing far easier and orders of magnitude more effective. It's still one of my all time favorite plague films, and these are somewhat nitpicky gripes. 8.5/10 regardless.

It's probably for the best that I didn't see this movie - the trope of "there's a deadly virus around us, but let's do idiotically dangerous things by interacting with plague carriers because we're trying to be good Samaritans" drives me nuts. So many movies do this and I have yet to understand why, knowing full well that most people understand the difference between 'that person is injured, and we are in a good position to assist them" and "that person has no chance of survival either way, and will likely kill all of us if we interact with them", and would leave the plague carriers. I guess it's just more of the old phenomena of going into the dark, scary basement by yourself and the audience screaming not to do it. Movie didn't look half bad otherwise, but the brother at the end going full douchebag and demanding his sibling kill him to get the key was also dumb. Apparently they weren't really that close.

Guys... it takes more than a few hours to travel from one continent to the next (and supposedly that's how fast this thing kills you), and this disease is only transmissible from person to person, unlike Ebola which is spread mainly by mosquitoes. The point I'm getting at is in an effort to make their film have the most deadly disease on film ever they made it even more unrealistic than a zombie virus. I get it, the point of the movie was to focus on the survivors and them turning on each other, I doubt they put much thought into the whole reason for the apocalypses other than it just being a point to move the plot forward.

This reminds me way too much of how things were during the lockdown, the depression and the overwhelming amount of anxiety and stress that came from it. It nearly broke me, and it nearly broke a lot of other people too, especially those who had a bad break up right before the lockdown. However, we all made it through that rough time in history. For some of us, we became better people as a result. But, remember this. Live life to the fullest, because it’s stuff like this that could turn our entire world upside down.

Carriers, Contagion and the korean one (forgot its title) are three of my most favorite viral disaster films, topping anything zombie related.
