In this movie Celine has a line that I believe captures the essence of the trilogy: "I guess when you're young, you just believe there'll be many people with whom you'll connect with. Later in life, you realize it only happens a few times". Nice commentary, James :)

Life is woven with gossamer threads... those fleeting moments and people that touch our lives in a special way. We only realize it years later. I see similarities with what Celine was saying and something Doc Graham said in "Field of Dreams". Dr. Archibald "Moonlight" Graham : We just don't recognize life's most significant moments while they're happening. Back then I thought, "Well, there'll be other days." I didn't realize that that was the only day.

This is my favorite of the trilogy. Ethan Hawke said in an interview that Dead Poets Society taught him how to act, but working on these movies taught him how to just talk. Both he and Julie Delpy are great with nuance; they don't over-act, they don't under-act.

I love how the first one has a nice balance of optimism for the future and reflection and how this one deals with the realities of real life. You see them reflecting and realizing how rare a connection like they had was but once they meet each other again, it's like that optimism comes through again in the most subtlest of ways. There is so much I could say about this film. Great to see someone else experience them for the first time!

Beside being an excellent movie and sequel it's impressive how not only the time that has passed in the story is the same as the time that passed in real life between the two movies, but also the fact that this movie is pretty much shot like if it is in real time, the one hour and twenty minutes it last is exactly the time they spent in the scene and that's is incredibily hard to achieve not only for the reasons you rightly point out (the two camera angles) but also from a cinematography point of view as almost all the scenese are in natural light and continuity is maintained despite the sun gradually setting and thus continually changing light. This film truly is a gem and it must have been so incredibly difficult to craft in every aspect, screenwriting, acting, directing, and cinematography, and yet they managed to obtain such a wonderful result. :)

@@JamesVSCinema I promise this is not a spoiler. It's just a fact :D I don't know if you noticed how every film has a 9 year gap between them. Sunrise - 1995, Sunset - 2004, and Midnight - 2013. Secondly, I love how the films' titles reflects that passage of time (Sunrise, Sunset, Midnight) and the movie ends just on that part. For the first movie it ended when sunrise came. For the second one, it ended just a couple of minutes after sunset, and so on. I have nothing but excitement for your reactions on these series of films. For the longest time that I have scoured youtube for a reaction, and to no avail mind you, the first person to ever do a proper reaction to these films is you. This is the best! Oh, for the record, I only came across these films last year in the middle of the pandemic, out of boredom, at 1 o'clock just after midnight, and I have binge watched it in that span of time. hahahaha Safe to say, these 3 films are my favorite romance films ever. The simplicity, realness and the beauty of the mundaneness of it all, a set of movies only focusing on the simple and clear conversation of two people speaks volumes and that my friend is what makes it a romance epic :) please forgive my long reply.

The Before trilogy is really unique. Time plays a huge factor because the characters age with the actors, and the cadence of their dynamic evolves with each film. I think Before Sunset is a brilliant follow up! Show stopping performances from both actors. They barely touch each other in this film, but they don't have to, there's no lack of electricity on the screen.

To me it seems like such a weird thing to be a part of, as well as grow up watching them while roughly the same age. Not a lot of trilogies use the real life time in between to such an extend and I feel like its hard not to connect to your own life. Even trippier for Ethan Hawke who was also in Boyhood

This idea of a whole movie in one day is something Linklater has done from the start - going all the way back to his first indie release 'Slacker', this trilogy, Dazed & confused. He's also continued exploring the real time (9 years between movies/9 years characters aged) in his newer film 'Boyhood' which follows a young boy as he grows up over 12 years and which was filmed over 12 years (with Ethan Hawke as the boys father). For the second and third movies in this trilogy, one reason the actors/dialogue is so fluid and good is that he wrote the second and third movies with Ethan Hawke and Julie Delphy as co-writers.

I don't think it was ever intended to have a sequel. But the actors were definitely instrumental in making it happen, I think Julie Delpy took a lead on the screenwriting to get it moving, if I remember right. I also think this was maybe the first movie where the same amount of time passes on screen as it does in real life for the viewer, I think it was considered groundbreaking in that way. The song playing at the beginning is also Julie Delpy's song 😁

It was soooooo aggravating waiting those 9 years to find out what happened. When I first saw this movie out I lost it, dropped everything and sat down to watch it asap. I will say though that there is something good about leaving it open like the first movie did because then you could spend time "creating" what happened next in your head - sometimes you build it up only to get let down

I love this movie because it’s a PERFECT movie but I also love this movie bc I relate a lot to her character. Like Celine, I have an adolescent sense of curiosity in this adult world...I never stopped being inquisitive! Unfortunately, it’s a trait a lot of adults toss because they’re tricked into thinking they’re supposed to have all the answers by 21, 25, 30 & whew what a pity and whew to the disappointment when they realize life is a never-ending merry go round of learning and exploring and findings. What’s even worse, most ppl force themselves not to feel, no one wants to be accused of being too sensitive or called soft..soooo, ppl run from their feelings but if you’re not allowing yourself to feel then you become numb. And if you’re numb..you can’t take in the world around you like you should and therefore you’re not inspired to ask questions that spark your imagination and the wonder of it all and my my my how sad 🙁 Also like Celine, I can be a lil long winded when it comes to things I’m passionate about 😂 I’m sorry for the mini ramble! Anywho. Watching this movie was the first time I was able to see myself through the eyes of my past lovers bc this was the first time I truly felt seen in a film, I accurately saw myself reflected and didn’t feel ashamed or ridiculous as I usually feel about my quirks but instead I witnessed the charm ...well, until I watched Call Me By Your Name and then there was Elio 😌

The scene where she asks about his wife n kid, I just noticed they were walking close together then, as she asks that, they start down a flight of stairs with a railing between them.

Delpy and Hawke are both great writers so they have some creative power here, also.

All three of these movies are great, even though this one is the shortest one, and the most experimental in terms of the long takes, it also the most streamlined in terms of focusing solely on these two characters, I think this one might be the best of the trilogy

Julie Delpy also directed two movies after this that have the same vibe! 2 Days in Paris: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/eMuAnaxmrZPYmoE.html 2 Days in New York: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/rcp4gNN337GycX0.html

I would love if James eventually reacted to Waking Life and A Scanner Darkly also both Richard Linklater films, they are absolutely great in they own right!

yea!! Man. This movie got me. This whole series got me. You know how pumped I am for this shit? packing another bowl, let's do this. edit...you might touch on this later, I am just starting the video, so you may know this already. Not sure it started out like this, however now the idea is the basically check in with Jesse and Celine every 9 years. There is no promise of another film, but all involved have expressed interest of following the couple through life. And since all the main people are true artists (Linklater, Hawke and Delpy) I have faith it might actually happen. And I am all in for it haha. another edit...god damn, I could do this all day. 2 more things quick. Julie Delpy's music in the movie is magic. Also the opening shots are showing the places they walked through in reverse order. Just like Before Sunrise in Vienna, but at the end of the film. And shown from the first to last spot.... Awesome stuff.

Before Sunrise ended with a "Lady or the Tiger" moment, where the point is that you are supposed to answer the question 'do they meet again?' in your own mind. So being a huge fan of this film, when a sequel was announced, I was surprised and disappointed. Until I saw the sequel, that is. Then the whole film changed character, and became much deeper and more mature.

Have you seen 'Como Agua Para Chocolate '? Sending you a greeting through the 'setting-on-fire horseback riding' scene -_- I can't separate both movies from my imagination because I have seen them around the same time and people I felt comfort with.
