I'd be interested on your take from a filmmaker perspective on the Wachowskis Cloud Atlas. It got critically panned, but I love it. Something about the storytelling concept just clicked with me. It plays on the idea of the soul having karma and reincarnation and they get actors to play multiple roles across the film.

This is more or less an autobiography of writer/director Cameron Crowe. Most of this actually happened to and around him, including losing his virginity. The Humble Pie manager is Peter Frampton guitar legend and former member of Humble Pie. He also wrote music for the movie.

Cameron Crowe actually was a writer for Rolling Stone as a teenager. Stillwater is based on the Allman Brothers, who Crowe toured with. The incident on the plane that almost crashed actually happened to Crowe when he was touring with The Who.

They’re mostly based on Humble Pie. That’s why Frampton makes a cameo as the Road Manager playing cards. The actual Penny Lane was his girlfriend and he did go solo like the film alludes to with Russell from Stillwater.

Stillwater is more based on the 100s of little known bands of the 70s that had a little fame and almost made it big aka the title Almost Famous, and the 'plane scene is nod to all the rock stars/bands killed in plane crashes over the years in rock history.

What breaks my heart about this film is that it represents a time in history that began in the 1970s, continued on through the 1980s, and sadly ended at the close of the 1990s and the dawn of the 21st century, and that will probably never be repeated.

Lester Banks was a real dude. He wrote for Cream Magazine and gained a real following. Nancy Wilson, who is married to Cameron Crowe, is responsible for this extraordinary soundtrack. All the little things that went into making this film filled with nostalgia, (painful homecoming). It's no accident! There's a part of my brain that hurts like a toothache, but at the front of my forehead. It might be the regret I feel that I didn't have the balls this kid had.

Sometimes you come across art that manages to catch a feeling of nostalgia deep within you, even if you didn't experience it in the past to explain that nostalgic feeling. It captures the spirit of something you've experienced in your past, which to me is the highest compliment I can give art. I had it with this movie. I also had it with a video game called Spelunky.

You really should try to find the extended version -- called "The Bootleg Cut" -- it adds another 40 minutes, and it's almost exclusively character development, with a lot of it for the Stillwater bandmates to really flesh them out. Plus the director's commentary features both Cameron Crowe and his actual mother. Easily one of my favorites.

My favorite thing about those cut 40 minutes is how they emphasize the fact that Eddie (the drummer) has only one line in the movie ("F--- it! I'm -- I'm gay!"). Twice in the cut material, you see him silently decline to answer interview questions, which makes his coming out that much more significant. People who have only seen the "official" release are often surprised when I tell them that that was his only line.

So glad you watched this one. It's one of my favorites. The cast and director recently got together on Zoom to reunite and they had lots of great stories. Patrick Fugit, who plays William, was only 15 when they made this, and he's all grown up now. He had a lot to say about the deflowering scene, which is my favorite scene because William seemed to be so mature for his age, but in that moment he was just a boy. The actor was understandably very nervous about filming it, cause he was playing the scene in his underpants with four super attractive and experienced young women, and he was presumably a virgin at that point. Can you imagine? Think back and wonder if your teenage self could handle that. My teenage self would have lost it. He seemed to handle everything with grace and maturity. For a teenage boy, his performance in this film was pretty remarkable.

Love this movie to bits. It's just so - sweet, rough, difficult, lovely. Every scene has connections with so much else going on in the movie. Russell's hesitancy before agreeing to bet the Band Aids, William's look of devastated disillusionment, the original band manager caring for Russell's feelings about the decision, all of it ties into scenes before and after. It's so damn good. For a similar but different movie, I highly recommend "That Thing You Do" It's similar in that it's about music, but it's about a one hit wonder band. Written and directed by Tom Hanks, It's on the same level as Almost Famous. Just on a different plateau. Like, they are about as equally great, to me, but very different in tone and storytelling. Like with this movie, it seems you did, get the director's cut. It adds so much more depth to the story.

One of the things I love is that is captures a unique time when rock journalism (and journalism in general) had such integrity. When a reporter would become "embedded" with a band, travel with them, and get a complete picture of who they were as people, the lifestyle. We just don't have that today. Cameron Crowe has filmed a lot of gems from the 90's, as well. Hope this sends you on a deep dive of his career.

This has been my favorite reaction to Almost Famous I’ve seen on YT. You just get it man. It’s a love letter to music and a music lover’s journey begins usually in youth. The music that gets you through it all which makes this coming of age film centered on music that much more poignant to me. It’s weird, I saw this one maybe in 8th or 9th grade but I’ll never forget how inspiring and nostalgic it felt all at the same time. So much is not defined here, we don’t know if the relationships will last or what certain moments meant but you feel it and how fleeting it is. Many have already mentioned how the movie is pretty much based on the director's own experiences as a teenage rock journalist in the 70's, but one bit of trivia that I like a lot is how he later said that the scene where his sister and his mother make up when his sister takes him home didn't happen in real life and it was just a bit of wishful thinking on his part because in truth they remained estranged for decades, but that when his mom and sister watched the movie they felt compelled to reach out to each other and start rebuilding their relationship. I love this movie for many reasons, but that little bit of trivia is honestly beautiful.

Man, your reaction to this movie was 100% the same as mine when I first saw it. It does this amazing job of putting the viewer in a position to fully understand the nostalgia the director felt in his real life, and whose characters are themselves riding the course of a dying time which they can’t help but love. I love Almost Famous. I’ve heard some people criticize Patrick Fugit’s performance as the main character, but I personally think he acts the of a smart but awkward, passionate 15-year-old very well.

So glad you reacted to this. It's a masterpiece and my favorite film of the millennium. It made a lot of top 10 lists for the aughts. Anyone that came of age, like Crowe, during this era knows how dead on he got the vibe. Great film!! The extended Directors or Bootleg Cut is even better.

Please watch "the bootleg cut" of this movie. It's called untitled. It's wonderful. This is one of my absolutely personal movies for me. It's about 30 minutes longer. So so great. Perfect film made better...at least for me. It's Cameron crowds preferred cut of the film. Its available on vudu and on bluray.

Hey James, it was so nice to hear about your story. Thank you for that. I really enjoyed your reactions and comments as the movie was rolling. I had just watched this movie 2 days ago so even the muted parts were fresh in my mind. It did such a great job capturing the feel of the 70's music scene. Thanks again for watching and reacting to this!

James, thank you 🙏 for this great reaction. AF was a deeply personal film for Crowe and it shows in the gentle layering of the story and plot. It’s the coming of age story of an auteur. It’s no wonder you can relate to it in ways that cannot be articulated.

Hey man I'm 33 and I'm still waiting to stop feeling young. I'm following my dreams with even more passion than I had at 20 and my world keeps getting bigger and more exciting every time I take another risk. That "youth" feeling that you're talking about last as long as you stay active in life. Aging isn't so much about how long you've been alive, but the point at which you start settling for less and taking the easy roads through life. It would take a supernaturally perfect woman or a boatload of personal trauma to slow me down. I don't plan on stopping until I lose the ability to travel to new places, create art and learn new things. On that day I'll decide to die with a smile on my face.

Hey James I love your ending conversation as someone that wanted to get into film and music but who unfortunately got thrown off the rails by life and trusting the wrong people and am now working a regular 9-5 it's nice to see someone passionate about the arts and who loves film for film sake. I love watching your commentary

I love this movie! From what I understand, it’s semi-autobiographical of Cameron Crowe’s life who did write for Rolling Stone when he was a teen. The band Stillwater is supposedly based upon The Allman Brothers.

First time I saw this film was on an airplane - old school, where it was one film for the whole cabin. So, of course... they cut the airplane scene. I couldn't figure out what the heck was going on after that. Even so it was a great film - but was a good bit better after I saw the missing piece.

Kate Hudson was just an absolute beauty, just like her mom. Kate said that famed groupie, Pamela Des Barres, was an inspiration for her character. Pam's book, "I'm With The Band," is the quintessential book about groupie life. You mention so many great moments, Also, parallel moments. The girl chasing the bus sets up for the later scene when he watches the plane leave. Great film.

Fun Fact, Cameron Crow wrote Fast Times at Ridgemont High which had a cameo of Nancy Wilson, the guitarist from Heart, they fell in love, got married, and she is the one who did the score for this film

Omg I clicked so fast when I got the notification for this! Almost Famous is literally one of my favorite films of all time (next to Moonrise Kingdom and Big Fish) and had such a significant impact on me as a teenager. I’ve always loved various genres of music and Cameron Crowe has literally said that Almost Famous was his love letter to music. Fun fact Cameron Crowe (the director) was a music journalist at a very young age and this film is semi-autobiographical for him. Philip Seymour-Hoffman’s character Lester Bangs is to this day someone I wish I could hang out with for a day.
