My roommate got fired from his PA job because "They need that job for the producer's niece". Hollywood so trash.

Don't sign contracts if they say you have no course of legal action if you feel you have unfairly been fired. What are the unions for? You know what would happen if someone who's had a civil service job (very union oriented) for even a year or more was fired because someone wanted to give their neice or nephew that job? They'd take the city to court, especially if they were past the probation (provisional) period.

That is actually why they came up with tenure for teachers. You could be working somewhere for years and then it was the director of school's nephew needs a teaching job and says he will coach soccer (or whatever). They could fire you for no reason. They know have tenure. You can still be fired but it requires DUE PROCESS (you have to get warnings, documentation, improvement plan, etc, so when they say teachers cannot be fired that is not true just means admins don't want to follow procedures). They actually changed the time, think it used to be 3 years and now it is 5 (I think) to get it. Also, in TN teachers cannot strike. The "union" can ask for benefits and negotiate but if they say no, nothing you can do. At one place I worked, they did not get even a cost of living increase for years (local government would not approve a tax increase). Also one school did not have the budget approved so we would not get paid. They said a local bank would LOAN US THE MONEY for our pay and we could pay it back when the budget was approved. Luckily it was right before school started. Also, teachers don't get paid over the summer for not working. You sign a contract for 180 days and they pay you over 10 months or 12 months (some places now only do the 12 months any more). I was not told this for my first job so had to get a summer job.

A couple of studio’s executives and entertainment attorneys reached out to me to set up funds for their features. I was like not a bad story and sure. When someone in the group suggested me to not hiring white male to work in the production. I asked why? They answered we should focus on DEI and the Unions policies. So this is what I told them: I will let my investors pool and all my shareholders (we own a stock) to know that Hollywood is a landfill full with garbages and trash like you. And “ABILITY” is what we are looking for. Or else you go to the prison if the movie is not doing well and be responsible to shareholders. And yet, don’t portray the shareholders as a villain. You garbages are the villain group!!! And all my shareholders are very happy with my decision, they are double down the $$$$$$$$ to Indie Film Filmmakers. These idiots will sure send UNIONS to make our life difficult. The unions will definitely brag about their “Got-Cha” moment. None of the WGA writers have any clue the pre-requites from their unions when a producer is looking to make an offer. The dragging negotiation process, lost my interest to hire union writers. That’s the reason they only have one writing gig. OR I read the script, share the stories with my shareholders, run through a content health index score, any DEI, Woke script got turned down immediately. Oh, by the way, we are turning down top Celebrities attached investment. 😂😂😂

Also when the universities lowered the bar in literature and writing requirements for graduation and implied qualifications the new "talent" entering the industry resulted in the "quality" entertainment products. Creators are not entitled to an automatic acceptance, an audience or success, the entitlement is reflected in the behavior of attacking fans demanding they spend money on things they don't want. @@Princess_Feona I teach at a university (Science) and I can confirm this is the case across the board. Entry requirements have been absolutely slashed. The people getting into university courses now have, on average, only a pale shadow of the ability that they did in previous decades. You need to have skill and intelligence in the first place to build on. Simply going to university won't make a person smart if they weren't to begin with, but we don't take this into consideration any more. It's all about maximum student throughput for $$$ ....universities are just degree mills now.

This is the dark times for the industry. I brought this up after the WGA strike was settled. The writers contract is really good, but I knew it would come with a lot of pain. We are seeing a purge, and those not part of the problem will be caught in the crossfire. One of those VPs on the tictok video I knew personally, and they were a HUGE problem in the industry, and killed the momentum to a lot of projects that audience would love. While it's not great that those who aren't problems are hurting, the sad reality is that this is what happens when you adapt the 'new' and 'experimental' in your hiring practices instead of restricting it only to your storytelling. Hollywood will recover, and it will be extremely painful, and it will take a few years, and that's because the industry had spent the last 10 years rejecting talent and pushing agenda.

I used to be a comic book fan, that got destroyed. I used to be a movie fan, that got destroyed. I am still a video game fan, that is being destroyed. Most US made entertainment is starting to feel like Disney's low end shows. Written by AI, with below average actors being filmed by inexperienced people in a warehouse... The reality of things is that the cleanup that needed to happen was not at the creative level. What was necessary was a complete purge of all the board rooms. It is crazy to see the amount of destruction the current crop of executives has wrought on what used to be the biggest entertainment industry in history/the world. I do not think they can recover from this. I think we will see new entities emerge that will replace what was destroyed by opportunism, greed and short term thinking. These new entities should be very wary of how they build their internal structures. Entertainment by management/design by council always leads to a complete failure and total collapse.

So I'm watching these Tiktoks. Here's some context surrounding those people, as far as I could find out - all of these people seem to have a common denominator , besides their experience: Reality/Unscripted TV. - Matt Hobin has been producing/directing pretty steadily since around 2010, primarily for reality shows. Before that he was working as a prod asst for a few years. - "Marsha" said she was a producer on the Kelly Ripa game show "Generation Gap" - there's no Marsha listed, but she might be M.E. Palacio, and that person's body of work (as a production supervisor) is in game shows and awards shows for like two decades. - Wilfredo Hernandez, who's listed as "Wil Hernandez" in imdb has been working in the industry for over 20 years exclusively in REALITY TV. - Steve Mellon listed some his own credits, though he also worked on VFX for Star Trek: Nemesis. Still his resume primarily is made up of reality TV. The rest I didn't have enough info to go on, but I'm guessing they are all used to working in that same genre. I hope though that these people can find some relief.

Hollywood is dying. It is truly sad to see people suffering. To see the end of an age caused by blind fanaticism is painful Numerous people without fault are being hurt. Yet the people in Hollywood have no one to blame but themselves for their strident activism or their silent acquiescence. They killed the golden goose by their own actions. Hollywood at one time was unstoppable. Even during the Great Depression, Hollywood thrived. Hollywood then entertained and inspired people. It helped people to forget their problems for a brief time. People drew inspiration and hope from the stories. Now the Hollywood of today wants to sermonize. It wants to blame and chastise the audience for their imaginary sins. Entertainment is no longer a priority. The woke message is all-important. The audiences that ultimately pay the bills have had enough. Technology has made it possible for creatives to create anywhere. , Audiences can find entertainment with fresh new voices elsewhere as Hollywood churns out sequel after stale sequel.. Outside of their minds, the modern audience that Hollywood caters to doesn't exist. People haven't changed in their hopes and desires. The audience today is the same as the audience of the past.

Where’ve you been, Misters Film Students? Nepotism has been in the film industry ever since there’s been a film industry. The likes of Liza Minnelli, Desi Arnez Jr, Jeff and Beau Bridges, Michael Douglas, Emilio Estevez and Charlie Sheen, Frank Sinatra Jr, Max Landis, Josh Trank, Carrie Fisher, Ron Howard, and John Ritter have all won the entertainment industry genetic lottery regardless of talent level.

That ain't the half of it. Stunt men are the sons of stunt men, grips the sons of grips, costumers the sons and daughters of costumers, etc. A fun game I like to play is "look up the actor". Nine times out of ten, someone you wouldn't expect is the child of someone already in the club.

@@hamiltoncox7651 I forgot that. Look up any tv show credit and see how many makeup artists over the years have the last name of Westmore (one of the most famous being Michael Westmore who did the makeup for Star Trek on the big and small screen from TNG all they way to the end of Enterprise.

Yeah it’s rampant. Just to add to it…I think Jamie Lee Curtis is like 4th gen actress. Nic Cage’s uncle is the director of The Godfather, Coppola. Jennifer Anniston’s dad was a soap star. Look at the new actors. Maya Hawke (Stranger Things), Margaret Qualley (Tarentino’s last flick, Death Stranding), John David Washington (Tenet), Timothee Chalamat (Dune), Emma Roberts (horror stuff), Lily Rose Depp (The Idol), Zoe Kravitz (Batman), Ice Cube son, James Gandolfini son, etc.

I'm sorry, but am I supposed to feel bad for all those people just because they worked in Hollywood? When I was laid off from my profession 3 times I didn't hear anyone bemoaning my state of affairs. No I lost everything, essentially becoming homeless and penniless, but I'm supposed to care about these people now? People who pushed or went along with the ideology that ended up screwing them over? No, sorry. I'm fresh out of tears. Welcome to the real world.

"There is no proof that 'get woke, go broke' is real." Movies began to follow the prescriptions of identity politics and drove out experienced storytellers to make it easy for diverse voices to fill a quote. Movie quality dipped. KZfaqrs with story experience stepped up to explain the mechanism by which good stories work and bad stories don't. Audiences began to understand the craft and the parts of storytelling, and so they what was going wrong. So they stopped supporting movies that despised them. Esg funds stepped in to fill the gap while 'people learned to think the right way and get over their temper tantrum and have their behavior forced into obedient spending'. Audiences saw this, and didn't watch the movies even harder. They reverted to watching older things that didn't hate them. Studios tried to get in on that by doing reboots, but still with no good stories and with staff that hated the audience. Audiences stopped coming. Esg funds realized that they were losing money, and stepped out. And now good folk who were not protected by the esg umbrella are the first to suffer. Get woke. Go broke.

Great video that brings awareness. My heart goes out to those professionals. That said, when push comes to shove, a family man or woman head of a household MUST work in whatever field is necessary. McDonald s if it pays the bills, waiting tables, cleaning, retail … you DON’T wait for a miracle or get in more debt. I mean it’s unbelievable when I heard that guy say he’s living on credit. Why? Are you handicapped?! You go find work anywhere! you adjust your way of living. Obviously you cut living costs where you can. You get rid of that Mercedes or any luxurious thing you have. Sell that boat! Whatever it takes! adapt.

Film is not a family business, and they’re turning it into one. Mind you I still need to watch the video but as an aspiring creative and actor, this is infuriating to me how all of our modern day celebrities (actors and singers) are children who have had careers handed to them either bc they started when they were 4 or they’re the child of a director or producer. I’ll probably be blacklisted from Hollywood if I ever get in because I will shine a spotlight on all the nepo babies if I am ever given an opportunity for an award speech

Supply and demand it is as simple as that. I there is no demand for what Hollywood is currently supplying then either the customer goes out of their ways to find suppliers that are catering to their demands, probably foreign productions or suppliers (non Hollywood) who think they can produce that which is wanted will go out of their ways to make themselves more visible to the market.

This is an industry that has cannibalized itself. The events of 2019/2020 was like a door being opened on a building on fire where the open oxygen caused that fire to accelerate. Hollywood killed the home video industry in favor of streaming and the streaming wars. Events of 19/20 killed the theatrical market. Movies are not making money in the box office. And now the streaming services are all losing money and causing prices to hike to the point where streaming is costing you as much as cable. Now with no money and losses going sky high; there's nothing. Only advice, go non-union. That's the only way you're going to stand out.

I haven't worked in the industry for 4 years now after my (supplier based) business was shut down for two years due to fear manipulation ......and then I was further marginalised for not taking the poke (where I also lost my part time uni teaching job which was ironically online and was going to continue online). I still feel for these folks even though many were likely amongst the people who were apathetic to and wouldn't even discuss the nastiness (and deliberate destruction) which happened to myself and many others.......until it happened to them unfortunately.

Hollywood’s streaming model was always unsustainable. Now is the part of the Streaming Wars where the companies cut spending and try to survive. And when writers aren’t allowed to revise a first draft, are we really surprised at the quality that we’ve been seeing? There’s no such thing as “the screenwriter” anymore - just cogs doing what producers tell them to. The system itself has been broken for a long time.

10:30 ok, this might be the stupidest thing Alan has ever said. The mortgage crisis was caused bc of the Bush administration and its deregulation governing which trickled down to federal oversight agencies, which in turn eased off on banks and mortgage brokers. It happened under Bush’s watch. When Obama took office in 2009, he took measures to fix the recession and subprime mortgage crisis including a major stimulus package, banking regulation, and comprehensive health care reform. As the economy improved and job creation continued during his second term (2013-2017), the Bush tax cuts were allowed to expire for the highest income taxpayers and a spending sequester (cap) was implemented, to further reduce the deficit back to typical historical levels. The number of persons without health insurance was reduced by 20 million, reaching a record low level as a percent of the population. By the end of his second term, the number of persons with jobs, real median household income, stock market, and real household net worth were all at record levels, while the unemployment rate was well below historical average.

I work as a PA/Set Dec. Worked on 2 big commercials with a studio. They liked me a lot. Was desperate for a job at the time so I worked my tail off. I came in one day and there was a new PA, who was the producers daughter. It was her first time being a PA. The production manager wasn’t keen on the idea of having her because she couldn’t drive (which is necessary for a PA). Went to PA on another project I was contractually obligated to do. The PM told me to call the studio when I’m done and let them know I’m available again. Once I was done the project, I called them. They never answered my emails or picked up my calls. Tldr, never heard from them again after they took the producers daughter. Seen so much nepotism in this industry. Won’t let it bring me down though. I wish the industry had a system of rewarding work. Doesn’t turn out that way

There is nothing wrong with giving unrepresented or underrepresented groups within an industry or field a "helping hand" to get into that industry or field. The problem comes when hiring goes beyond affirmative action and into discrimination. Right now, it seems that those in the majority still view themselves as the minority they were years ago.

We knew this would happen. The strikes gave everyone want they wanted, but at what cost? It's sad that veteran above the line people with loads of experience have lost their jobs, possibly forever. Meanwhile, a diversity hire that lacks the networking and experience will take some jobs. But will they last after they fail to become successful? We saw this, but they had long ass strikes that turned their worlds upside down.

For those ppl in Hollywood out of work and don't know what to do next...U need to changed ur mindset. Lower expectations is a must. Assumed the worst so u can wake up and do what u have to do to survive. Just get out there and start earning any kind of income. It will be hard at first but eventually u'll figured it out. Don't sit around waiting for that phone calls. Get a food delivery account and start making deliveries. Get a 150 CC scooter to save on gas. It is hard work but will bring some kind of income. Better than living on credit cards.
