Filtering & Disinfecting Water in the Field: Grayl Geopress & Firebox Nano Stove

Being able to filter or at least disinfect water in the field is and essential skill. Without proper hydration, one cannot survive for very long. Filtering water with a high quality water filter is usually the quickest and easiest way to remove harmful pathogens from raw water sources. Boiling water in order to disinfect is also a surefire method of killing any biological contaminants such as bacteria, protozoa and viruses. I will demonstrate a two stage filtering technique using the Grayl Geopress water bottle filter and also use a Firebox Nano Stove to boil water in the new Pathfinder Titanium Bush Pot for disinfection. Both the Grayl Geopress and the Firebox Nano Stove have proven themselves as valuable pieces of kit for any outdoorsman and I will discuss my experience with these items during the video.

Great video as always - very detailed and informative. I have a lot of water systems, ranging from a Steri-Pen, Sawyer, Frontier, Life Straw, Sweet Water pump and I really like the Grayl. It's become my primary water purification / filtration tool because of the pathogen and virus removal. Fast, efficient - a filter and drinking utensil in one. I've used it in the US, Australia and last year as the primary water source on a fly in fishing trip to Alaska last year - drank from the river every day....A great unit. I have the standard unit - and wish they would have had the large 24 oz unit like yours....Great investment, outstanding video. Thanks for your work.

I used the Grayl Geopress on a 4 day backpack trip last summer in an area of the Mt. Jefferson Wilderness in Oregon with lots of water sources. It performed well! Really sold on the ease of use and the technology.

Great video as always Matt! Awesome that you put some notes describing how increased elevation (Lower Atmospheric Pressure) affects the boiling point of water! I believe it is still a weak subject for many people, so the more awareness, the better off the community will be!

At 10,000 ft 11 000 on a low pressure day I've seen water boil at 186 degrees also at 6800ft and 9100 feet I've seen a difference of 21 degrees

"Water is the liquid of life, you should never take it for granted." Very wise words, I will be saying it that way to my kiddos from now on. Thank you for the tip on prefiltering for the Grayl. Those replaceable filters work for quite a while, but if that is the only one you have each press is a lot more expensive.

Hello Matt! Thanks for another great and practical video. Water truly is the "water of life", your Grandpa' was right!. I really like your treatise on boiling water. As you stated water boils at 212 deg. F. at sea level, but at only 152 deg F. at 30,000 feet (Mt Everest). an average drop of 1 deg.F. every 500 feet. Most common bacteria (other than a very few exotic ones who live near underwater volcanoes) cannot survive above 165 deg. F. Thusly water brought to a rolling boil at any altitude below 25,000 feet would be rendered safe to drink. In practicality that means that unless you are a technical mountain climber and above 25,000 feet, the moment your water reaches a rolling boil all bacteria are dead and your water is safe to drink (let it cool first of course). The boil it longer at altitude is a myth, once it reaches the boiling point at what ever altitude you happen to be, it would have reached its (terminal temp.) and will not gain temp regardless of how long you boil it. sorry for the long winded rant, science, it's my "thang".

I’ve also read (don’t know if it’s true) that we in North American don’t need to worry about viruses in water from the wild. That’s why commonly the filters don’t speak to viruses, only bacteria, Protozoa, et al.

Another fantastic video, can I ask what is pathfinders. Great tip of pre-filtering water first to conserve the life span of whichever implement someone uses. Review coming on the knife you were using, looking forward to that, if it's anything like the last knife review were in for a treat. I like the new ferro rod, I like the idea of emergency tinder. Matt...I know the filter is good for 65 gallons but how do you know you reached the 65 gallon limit? Is there an indicator on the filter?

Once it become difficult to press, you know the filter is getting close to it's end. I always keep a spare on hand in my gear back home so I can switch out before a trip if I am worried about it getting used up. You can definitely feel it when it is getting close.

Good video presentation. I don’t believe you missed anything. I especially liked that you mentioned conservation of resources. I’ve heard of a portable three stage filter (activated charcoal) that removes chemicals. Do you know if this filter and would you recommend one like that? Have you ever used a “gypsy well” as a pre-filter?

I believe the gypsy and coyote wells are the same; a hole dug about a foot (30 cm) from an above ground water source that is allowed to fill with “filtered”water that is then boiled as an added measure. All dimensions (distance away from source, diameter of hole and depth of hole) are of course dependent on personal preference but should also take into consideration local conditions. Personally my go to primary filter most of the time is a Sawyer filter due to life span, adaptability and portability but I have used other methods.

Great video friend🙂 i would like one of those brown bags. I always carry water for a night and have a filter for a backup. We’ve had a lot of rain and heat here as well. There are chanterelles everywhere. Have you seen any there? Oh I got my jr woodsman. I love it! Just ordered a beeswax dangler sheath from Randy for it🤩

I haven't seen any Chanterelles myself but I am a little jealous! 😀 I did get to eat some hen of the woods cooked in bacon grease the other weekend and that was very good. Good stuff as usual. When you go to collect the first water for filtration from the bag you should use the first bit to rinse out the bottom of the container before you start the filtering process. Make sure the container is clear as possible from debris. What filter will filter out possible chemical contamination also?

The Grayl paperwork mentions that it will filter chemical such as Chlorine, Benzene, Chloroform, and micro plastics. It will also filter Heavy Metals such as Lead, Arsenic, and Chromium. Of course, all of these in reasonable amounts. Thanks so much for tuning in Shawn!

Thanks for the video and knowledge. I'm not sure what kind of filter your using is made up. Just a thought, Chlorine from tap water can damage or brake down some Filters Membrane causing it to fail to work properly. If I use use tap water I will fill up a bucket and let it set for a few days till the chlorine dissipates. letting it set outside in the sun will dissipate the chlorine quicker.

The only way I know to desalinate water is through distillation. The Grayl will not work for salt water. Most other things though, it will get the job done. Thank you for tuning in!

I believe you got it almost right... but the order was wrong. FIRST, boil the water, THEN filter it. Think about carrying a dirty filter vs. carrying a dead contaminant filled filter. de KQ2E
