Somehow this is stuck in my head.. maybe I'll do a 'FTDSCIS rmx, haha.. btw this tutorials are sooo damn good, it really does make fun just listen to you and follow your advices. Most helpful tutorials on reason I've seen so far.. Even the propellerheads should officially recommend your channel... a great, smooth and calm teacher. big learning effects here. thx a lot!!

Thanks for the explanation. I always wondered about those buttons :) This is a very subtle effect, even when you toggled it in and out I hardly noticed affecting the sound. Maybe a drum loop would do it, it has more rich sound.

@Kymbo72, Most likely your speakers or headphone are not good enough or you just have not trained your ears to hear them accurately. I tell you the truth the differences are there.

This video is so inspiring! been using Reason since Version 3.0 and it's taken me this long as a musician to really understand compression EQ and Gating effects. I feel like i can finally start Mastering the right way using these techniques.

Hi Mat.. Hope you are fine.. This side chain video is very different form all the others I have seen earlier... In those videos it was shown that a physical connection was made in the side chain input on the mixer... Now you have shown it with switches and tweeking. .. ARE BOTH THE SAME THING? or ONLY FOLLOWING THIS METHOD IS GOOD ENOUGH.... OR THIS IS AN UPGRADED METHOD FOR REASON 7 AND ABOVE..... PLEASE REPLY

Md Ahmad This video is about using the Filters To SideChain feature that is built into the Mixer that's all. The SideChain input on the back of the Audio/Mix channel does not use the HP/LP filters.

I went through the videos again and I figured out that this one of the way to do side chaining and this process is known as deessing. . I Belive I want to understand Ducking where Bass and Kick Drum is involved in side chaining Thanks

But what do you do if the mix channel that you're routing to is *already* using its compressor? If you're sidechaining to that compressor, on the destination mix channel, then you're overriding whatever compression settings you'd already set up there. So how do you get around this? How do you preserve your original mix channel compressor settings while sidechaining?

You can either use the mixer built in compressor or use and Insert compressor or both. One to side-chain and the other to compress.

Does this just compress the frequency you've filtered or does the compressor kick in for the whole signal? i.e. does it act like a multi-band compressor or still just a normal compressor?

Sambasevam Shanmugam It's just compresses the Frequency you set it at. It is not a multi-band compressor but rather a single band compressor with a sweepable frequency range that you use to compress niche frequencies that you want to control right from the Mixer. It's easy and dam cool I think.

@learn_reason that's great! I thought it would compress the whole signal using the filtered input. If it just affects the filtered frequency that makes it a lot more useful. Thanks!

+Sambasevam Shanmugam You are right, it compresses the whole signal. The example with the bass is a bad one. The compressor only reacts on only the lows of the bass, but since the rest of the sound are overtones, it doesn't add anything usefull here. the whole signal is compressed. If you crompress a drum (whole bus or so, or rex loop with kick). Than you might want to use this feature. Using the HPF 2 S/C, lets you compress your drum without focussing to much on the kick, so the kick itself won't trigger the compressor as much. Or with only the LPF on, the whole drum might only be compressed when the kick hits.

There is no setting it up, you need to just understand how to Mixer works. Then you can adjust it to get your Phat sound. I am think parallel processing will be up your ally.

If I have a VOX_CH that has EQ on it I would then make a Parallel Channel just to do the SideChain setup like in the video from it over /into say synth . ?and would or should I make a Parallel channel for the synth also if say I am using a gate on it already . My next Side Chain ? is on the Master Compressor if I side chain the drum snare ,bass with say the M class stereo filter to just send the high freq to the bus to work on What happens to the lower freq I am filtering out meaning it (snare,bass) is not getting compressed in with the whole mix? or at all? once again than you for your time.

When it comes to mixing it is an art and once you understand how the VSSL works in Reason you can do and try anything you want. The fundamentals are the only thing you need to know and what you do after that is all you. So to answer try stuff and see how it works for your needs, you can do this when you understand how the mixer works and that is the purpose of the tutorial.
