There are tons of ways to sidechain in Reason. You can use an external compressors default or RE. I prefer to use the SSL is the easiest and most straightforward in this gives you the best overall feeling in my opinion.
Please comment or give a thumbs up. And If you haven't already please subscribe.
Below is a special link to my other KZfaq channel. You can even check out my sound cloud.
Thanks for watching.

been making music in reason for over 15 years and just now starting to learn mixing and mastering - i was intimidated by the learning curve. this was great for me as a beginner, thanks. i'm not sure how to determine ideal settings - i know it's a practice-listening thing, but until i develop the ear it'd be nice to have technical parameters to go by. thanks again

It still blows my mind that something as ubiquitous in modern music as side chaining is that is so convoluted in Reason as far as routing. It is literally a few clicks in ableton without ever having to navigate from the same screen. It would seem that im just going to have to design a combinator patch that gets tweaked per project for sidechaining. sheesh.. I get it. I just wish there was a much easier way to do this and not lose the inspiration when you already have a solid workflow for composing and mixing. just watching this tutorial for the umphteenth time it gives me a headache. either way.. just a small rant.. love your content. Very informative. thank you so much..

Hey! this is my second time watching your video in full length. I'm currently working on a track where i want to SIDE-CHAIN a very short length (transient) kick drum on top of a regular sampled kick drum on the bottom. Basically i want the transient fast 11ms / 20ms kick drum to have dominance over the regular kickdrum.... i'm trying to get the transient kick to be side-chained to the regular kick. a very fast ducking effect I'm struggling trying to set this up on Reason, I want my kick drum to be very snappy but retain the fullness of a kickdrum. Any tips how to go about layering and sidchaining this using REDRUM?

When I started in reason 3.0, I dove in and watched a ton of tutorials. One thing I found missing was a recommendation to turn the master bus compressor on before doing anything on the SSL. This suggestion I found in an hour long interview with an audio engineer who worked on the same SSL board that is emulated in Reason. What are your thoughts? If you write a song with it off the entire time only to turn it on when finished doesn't one have to adjust all your settings?
@siro9621

great tutorial, Thanks!! But one question, in your video the bass is synchronized like its quantized. When I do the exact thing I have a little latency. I tried to change the buffer rate but that did not changed it.

hello im new to your channel, and have learned a great deal, thank you. Can you explain the reason for using another instrument ( fast attack high ) with the midi of the drum ( pattern ) is it to create slices in the target instrument to form a certain sound design? thank you for your time
@Jellybeantiger
@Jellybeantiger 2 жыл бұрын
Reason is really hard to do sidechaining in compared to Reaper for example. I tried routing my Thor bass into a mix channel and running the signal from the parallel output of my kick channel into the sidechain in of the bass track but I got no signal at all. I thought all my routings were correct,relooked my routings over and over and couldn't find another way to do it so I gave up. Reaper is much simpler for side chaining.

how do i do this with a "ghost" kick? a bass drum that doesnt actually make sound but still forces a 4x4 floor sidechain pattern

Hey great vid but how do I set up one channel so that it can duck out of the way of multiple other channels? I've tried using a splitter on the sidechain input but doesn't seem to work. Thanks

Man… beetle juice is teaching me how to side chain.
@carnmarth334
@carnmarth334 3 жыл бұрын
But what if you're already using the channel's compressor settings for, well, compressing the channel? If you then alter the channel's compressor settings to suit the incoming sidechained signal from another instrument, then you've lost the compression that you wanted on the instrument that the sidechain is coming into.

How to side chain multiple chanels? I'm using kong drum vst i cant figure out how to do it. Thank you.
@thomasfranklin72
@thomasfranklin72 5 жыл бұрын
Well, you would have to create separate mix channels for the Kong drum designer, and then use the ssl as shown above. you can also use an m class compressor for each mix channel but its up to you really

I feel this method brings harshness to the audio as it doesn't stop it from compressing the audio. Instead of JUST sidechaining.... Am I doing it wrong?
@nowheretoshower
@nowheretoshower 4 жыл бұрын
The explanation of the audio connections on the Mix Channel rack device is flat out wrong. The "Parallel Out" is taken before the entire channel-strip making it "...the same as the output from this Thor.' The "Direct Out" is exactly the opposite of this by being taken after everything in the channel strip. This signal is what would be going to the master buss in default routing. RTFM
