2+1 is an underrated combo. so many options available to suit the waves. drop back to a bigger single and no side bites for speed on small waves or go for a small single and add big side bites for hold in bigger waves. or go with micro side bites a mid sized single ......

Really useful info on an area so overlooked but also frequently glossed over. Yep, it would help if you are talking technical to slow some of the numbers like 5% and less 'busy' backing music to help focus on the content. Thanks

When you do the 1/3 measurement I noticed in the video you put the Fin base in the centre of the box, you’re actually supposed to put where the fin starts at the centre of the box not the base. Great video though, thanks for Sharing.

Thanks for all this info. I’ve purchased many fins in my time. I run a D fin on all my longboards. I tried the rest, but the D always felt like a thruster a little bit. Dunno why.

The D fin is a classic but still works great in those classic logs. The feeling is lively yet very stable. Stoked you found the one that works for you.

great video. what's the relation/impact of using more rail on bottom turns rather than relying on a longer fin to keep board connected? I was talking to a shaper once who really seemed to discount using a longer fin to prevent sliding out - he was adamant that you just needed to lay more rail in the water. curious to know your thoughts. thanks!
@surfcraftunion

I first want to say thank you for your support and I love to hear from people like yourself. So I think that is more of an experience situation. Meaning some may be able to run a shorter fin and still bottom turn well. Some can bottom turn with no fin at all I suppose. But in the case of someone having issues of their fin sliding out and maybe not the skillset to lay more rail thats where I suggest a longer fin. I know shapers that think that 9 inches is more than enough fin for any board in general. But personal preference for myself I enjoy a bigger fin and I think a longer fin is a way easier fix than surfing beyond ability. At the same time less fin equals less drag so it's a very personal experience in everyone's case.

Great stuff on fins and log reviews. This kind of view point on gear is something that just does not appear much elsewhere. I have a question and guess I know your answer? If you have a pig or apex what's your thoughts on fins for pigs, I like a pigs because they turn easy. I got a Thomas 10.25 for 9'6 Apex, was also wondering about fins that maybe more loose, I find it tough to find much info on fins with less base but extend way back, like the flying diamonds equalizer. If your go-to is an apex wonder what you've found good/bad/ugly? Surfing and talking about surfing, good times.

Thank you for the kind words. I love chatting surf stuff too! So just to start this off although the apex is wide point back a touch I consider it more of a involvement outline and not a pig. Pigs from what I have noticed have a narrower nose in most cases and also don’t really have many performance characteristics. But lets get to the fun stuff haha. So personally and actually the next fin chat i am doing is with the apex and the Sub by Flying Diamonds in 10 inches. The outline is more in the 4A category which I normally do not dig. But it really brings the apex to a new level in the maneuver category. Still hold on the nose but not as much as the fin I was riding in my Surf Soon episode. As far as the equalizer I have one in 10.25. I honestly have only ran it in a Bing continental but I feel like they may excel in really wide tailed boards. It definitely loosened it up from a big pivot fin I was riding. Tons of hold and will do an episode with my cherry picker as soon as I can. Let’s get back to pigs for a sec though. I recently grabbed a 9’6 Christenson Bandito and I ran a Seemonster fin by Flying Diamonds in 10 and it is so fun. Those things are trim machines but also foiled and turn great from the tail. That fin gives some hold in pocket nose rides as well. Niall my friend there are to many options out there haha. But keep experimenting and let me know how you do

Excellent video! I saw the CJ video a while back and have been sizing my fins that way ever since. How does this all apply to 2 + 1 setups? Same thing but just size the fin for further down the box? Thanks
@surfcraftunion
@surfcraftunion 2 жыл бұрын
Thank you. I will be doing a whole episode on 2 plus 1 fin setups. But in a nutshell you can run the side fins so you can get a smaller center fin which will create a little lift.
@surfcraftunion
@surfcraftunion 2 жыл бұрын
But to actually answer that question a little better. If you want my Surf Soon Outlier 7 foot review that was a wide tailed stubby but had low tail rocker. Pretty sure I ran a 3.25 side fin and a 8 inch center. But in my opinion when you add side bites to a board most fin placement tips don’t apply as much as if it’s just a single fin. Reason why is your side fins are catching way faster and are also positioned above the single fin. So the single fin acts more as a control and not a stabilizer. If that makes sense?
@DH-lq3cx
@DH-lq3cx 2 жыл бұрын
@@surfcraftunion Yeah it does. Can't help but think there must be some sort of "formula" like with single fins though. Can't wait for the 2+1 episode. Off topic: I liked that Apex review. I want one now LOL

This is great! So is the 1/3 based on fin depth? Should fin rake be considered? I have two fins at 9". One is upright and the other much more raked. At the 6" mark, the raked fin has far more fin past the rail line.
