Twin fin surfing and twin fin surfboards are back in vogue thanks to the likes of Josh Kerr, Asher Pacey, Mark Occhilupo and others. In this series, I'm taking 11 of the best twin fin surfboards off the shelf and into the waves to decipher the best one.
In a twin fin, I’m looking for that same effortless feeling that carries you from critical manoeuvre to critical manoeuvre without losing speed or drive (given the wave has enough to offer) and, overall, I want the surfing experience to be easy because I know this will translate perfectly to the every day surfer.

When your saying some of the boards aren’t like twines Thant makes no sense. Don’t take this the wrong way what I’m getting at is that a twin is any kind of board thats shaped as a twin fin. I think your really after a fish or a twin fin fish. Mark Richard’s won his titles on twin fins that were basically short board shapes of the day but twin fins. A lot of the shapes you have there are fish style shapes and some are twin fins that have more of a short board outline. You almost need two category’s fishes and twins. I’m not trying to be picky but its kinda of confusing what your looking for its either a fish shape or a twin? Regardless its cool to see info for the general surfing public on twins as they are a great for for most people and will help a lot of surfers smooth out their style as its hard to do the same kooky turns on a twin as a short board they just tend to throw you off if you don’t surf them properly

You can build whatever balance of performance vs float or looseness vs hold you want on a twin fin. It doesn't have to be one or the other. You also don't have to place the fins straight at the back of the board. The sweet spot is 10 1/2" up from the tail or less. Forward gives more drive and looseness but at the expense of hold. Back gives more hold but at the expense of drive and looseness.

Spot on mate, the same goes for not being able to ride twinnies on your back hand. A lot of it has to do with the wave and wether a surfer is predominantly heavy on the back foot or front foot and wether or not they can transfer weight between turns. Some of my best surfs on a twinny have been on my back hand on Gary McNeil Rasta twin, it if anything goes better on my backhand.

Have to agree with the sentiments on the stock glass job on the CI Twin Pin. I’m not too heavy footed, but the indents on the deck are pretty significant. That being said, it goes so good

I have a Black Baron and it is the most amazing thing i own. Im not a big dude 5'10 75 kilo and I ride it 5'3 stock epoxy. The is no better feeling, fast, rides like a skateboard slides any second you want it holds when you want it. Hard to paddle since I got it so small but you get on and its amazing. My thruster and step up collecting dust even in overhead surf.

On the first day of a Baja trip I broke off the middle fin off my Kip Stick & was bummed until I said F it so I surfed twin fin the rest of the trip with no problems on the 3/6ft waves, but I still go with the thruster everytime. 🤙

Trailing edge of fin should be 5.750” from tail. Rear placement gives thruster feel, not loose and slidey like a slippery bar of soap. Greg’s g10 epoxy tabs were narrower than the boxes so you had wiggle room to set backward or forward 1/16 th inch either way!

Really good review , lots of info on the boards , as with most twinnys once you get one it takes time to adjust and also the fins used makes a lot of difference so , Ive used my twinny with so many different shape fins and it either make or break the board, so opinion you gave was very informative good to see, look forward to the final , my moneys on the hayden shapes.

This test is great. I have a Twinsman and it goes really well backside. Twins these days are much more versatile than the keel fin fish we were all riding 15+ years ago.

Great comment Craig!😊 Fins are so key! I really don’t like keel fins much at all. You just can’t put them on rail! I almost exclusively ride twins for a few years now, and every twin I’ve tried with keels just doesn’t work for me. I mean it works. It’s fun if it’s small and soft and you wanna throw some spinners and generally slide around a fair bit. But they’re just sooo loose and slidey and down the line that I find it extremely difficult to perform on them at all. Put in my trusty big tall upright CI twin fins. Similar template to the MR performance fins. Or the Akila Aipa’s. And all of a sudden you can hold through a turn without losing the fins and actually put it on rail and do proper cutbacks. Late drops and barrells and tight bottom turns are still an issue without the centre fin. As they will always be on an inherently loose board. But just having a lot more fin in the water/wall on steep sections makes a huge difference. My advice is if you wanna still be able to shred your twinny, don’t ride keels. Ride a big tall upright performance fin. Of course it depends on the board design, your abilty level, the waves, etc etc. as to what each person will prefer. But definitely try a few different styles of fin. In my experience, the fins make a massive difference in twinnys. More so than thrusters and quads 😊

Your surfing is better here than previous sessions at the indoor surf pools, more fluid. Not sure if its the boards, conditions the footage or just got better. Style looks more natural especially JS

The reason twin fins don’t go backside is because the heel only has 30% pressure that the toes have. The gap between the fins is too much for the heel to engage. This creates a slide. This is why twin fins always work so well on the toes side or the front side ……you’re welcome

Totally, or you can have the backhand fin slightly longer, gives you grip on the backhand side and slide on the other.

Kale you should do a series, best cheap surfboards price range 300-600 dollars of course after the twin fin series, I think the cheap series would be good for surfers on a budget or people who want to go to the next step but don’t want to pay the big price, just a suggestion it could be a really bad idea

Tried out the CI twin pin at a demo. An amazing board! I am by no means a good surfer but this board made me feel like a good surfer. It’s fast easy to use paddle and get into waves. Just a user friendly board

@@MyMotherWasaNinja And even less with 1 fin or even finless. Why not dismount fins while paddling, easy with FCS 2, and reinstall them before surfing? Paddling would be so easy that it almost feels like flying, or not. Reality is: speed while paddling is so small that drag induced by fins is minimal, no need to retract fins or choose less fins for less drag. It´s like reducing drag by 1% with each fin less, negliable.

@@rasmuszaurins7233 Dude are you just intentionally missing the point? It's not about the fins so much as it is the BOARD he's talking about ffs. I have ridden one too and found the same. Twinnies tend to be shaped wider, thicker and flatter... That's just how fishes have been since the dawn of knee-boarding onwards. Yes the difference in fin drag is negligible, but he's not talking about that ahaha.

JS looks super fast. The Hayden shapes looks better overall under your feet. Tough one, but the speed of the JS is way too hard to pass up. My vote is the JS black baron.

Don't know how they make them these days but my first twin fin shortie from GM in the early 70's was equal left and right. No difference. Everything was arranged equally and balanced equally side to side.

Maybe it's cuz I'm kind of dyslexic but I pretty much have the exact opposite opinion of everybody except maybe Josh Kerr. What I was hoping for was a reason why twinnies don't slip when you're going back side. So the problem for me. Is periodically on late take offs left. it just tracks up the face and throws me off balance .compared to a thruster or a quad. So if I know it's a South swell it's going to be most likely I'll probably take the quad. My quad is actually a twinzer it has little nubs in the back and big fins in the front. So it slides .if I needed to slide it's also a double winged round pen and my twin is a traditional fish. The grippiness of the fish is what I wanted to hear about and everybody says it slips . It don't slip for me/ heelside anyway. So I didn't really get anything out of this one good try Kale I'll still keep watching... Did you just dodge the barrel at 14 minutes 46seconds? Lol

There you said it… “one session in, I’m already stomping through it” … the tail. I’m gunning for the Sharpeye Twin Turbo, but I’m an old fella myself. A twinny is more like a skateboard on a wave, the backfoot really drives it, but you gotta be light on your feet between turns. By that I mean there’s a lot of unweighting/reloading inbetween to adjust feet placement in the transitions for a kick turn, carve or Ollie… about 1” or 2” for lateral placement and up to some crazy 6” shit of medial placement, much more than you’d need to do on a skate, anyway water ain’t like Masonite so y’a gotta improvise with the chop as you go, hence some hard work on that tail. I shifted the bottom rocker about 4” back on my boards after reading a book about MP, he’s right, it gives one a bit of gas under the front foot when one needs. Personally I’m happier on my backhand surfing a twinny, but then I always favoured my frontside ‘arse over me heels’ stuff on a skate being a more burly kinda skater. Going forehand on a wave it’s kinda easier to unweight the front foot to slide it into a toe edge bottom turn, was always my weaker backside turn on a skate, so if I still use my heels but push into the outside edges of my feet into my pinky to keep some pressure going through on the board, handy technique I pinched from snowboarding.

Sorry, a skateboard is most stable going straight, absolute traction, getting less with increased turning angle. I think you messed something up.

@@rasmuszaurins7233 nope, unless you’re carving there’s a lot of drift and slide on a skate most of the time as you unweight into and out of tricks, your totally stable as long as you’re guiding your weight back over the board at some point before the next big move. Your right that this happens a bit less on a surfboard unless you intentionally get the fins out the back or unintentionally lose them for a bit on the drop. That can get a bit squirrely on a surfboard until something re-engages again, then you can stomp it

@@ianseaweed I think we are talking different subjects. Me- Skateboard. You- Skate- Snowboard? You seem to be actually talking about a snowboard which is unstable when not set on rail. A skateboard has 2 axles and 4 wheels which is EXTREMLY stable going straight and therefore the choice of most land vehicles, like cars.

Never understood why people say it's hard on the back hand with twins. I ride twins better back hand then I do with a 3 rin set up.

Yep! Me too! Maybe my Shaper (same guy for 25 years, shaping my Fish) has really dialled in what suits me? Never have a drama Backhand & I never even think about my Twinnies under my feet.

How does it compare to the christenson fish? I have two Twinnies from Matt calvani/Bing and they are both absolutely mental (sunfish and twin fin fish)

@@tokyomassa22 the lane splitter i think is more shortboard-y and its funny he pointed out it feels like it wants to turn, id agree with that. its more sensitive than the fish still very loose. quicker rail to rail. christenson fishes are incredible though. i have both when i need some extra glide and the waves are a bit fatter i'm on my fish to get through the flat sections, when there's a little more steepness to the wave the lane splitter is more go to. it makes it through flat spots still but not like the fish does. its funny how you can try different boards and come out with different aspects, i rode the ci twin pin and it was nice but maybe im just used to the lane splitter but i liked it far more than the twin pin. the in the middle board would be the christenson c hawk. i actually think for this review that would have been closer to what he was looking for in this category.

@@wolf-yw9wk did you add a bit of volume to your Christenson fish if you’re riding in smaller fatter waves or did you find it has enough paddle power with that width regardless? Trying to decide on 5’6” vs 5’8” and balancing wave catching but also getting a rail in / performance (usually ride around that 32L mark for shortboards)
