I use Buffalo Systems Gear. For Cold weather, I specifically use the Special 6 Shirt. The inside is a thick Deep Pile fleece like fabric. I only have to wear it next to my skin. No other insulation required. The outside of the jacket is a Pertex Quantum fabric. Very breathable, wind resistant and water resistant. I used it a few days ago during my 3 mile walk at 12F. Worked great. I did an overnighter at 28F and slept with that and my 20F Feather Friend Down Comforter. I was warm. I used it in Iceland at the Arctic Circle in cool damp weather and during cool misty windy hikes. Great. Coldest I got to was zero with the wind chill. For me, Just awesome. Hi Pete!! I'm seriously jealous of you getting to Iceland and the Artic Circle!! Thanks for sharing your gear info. I've not heard about Special 6 and Pertex yet. I'll definitely be looking into them for furture trek adventures!! Peace!! 👍😎✌️

Meanwhile here I am in NC saying to myself “it’s 45 and slightly breezy…looks like I’m on the treadmill inside today since I don’t want to get cold”. 😂 Good luck to you and great job preparing yourself!

Layers are definitely the best! On trail I always end up toasty as soon as I'm moving, so it's nice to be able to adjust as needed

Hello!! I was thinking the same thing, due to all my heavier cold and rain gear. I'm going through my entire pack today amd if I don't find anything to remove, than I'll still be happy with the weight until I hit warmer weather!! Peace my friend!! 👍😎✌️

@@frankdotyjr looking forward to it!!! I actually made an attempt in 2022. Had to get off in Hot Springs, NC because of Blood Pressure. Got that under control now, going to make another attempt next year! You’re doing all the right things to prepare! My pack weighed 38 lbs in 2022. It now weighs 25 with water & 4 days food. That 274.9 miles taught me SO much! Can’t wait to follow your journey! 🥾🥾😎🏕️

Was colder than that in Atlanta this morning. And tomorrow also. I think the high tomorrow is supposed to be 32°. Clearly a lot colder in the mountains. You can get snow the Appalachian Mountains in March, or freezing rain and sleet. Even in April as possible. Not likely, but it can happen. So I think anybody backpacking that time of the year up there just needs to be prepared for the possibility.

Hi Dave!! Great advice and I thank you for it! WillyDawg, from the Class of 2023, is currently in GA headed to NC and is off trail due to the current frigid temps in the Smokies!! I decided to test the limits last night in my new shed that resembles an AT shelter. It was 16 when I bedded down at 11pm. By midnight it was 15, and just 11 at 3am. My sleep gear worked well except my air mat needed a bit more air due to the temps. There was also 4" of new snow by morning. The only issue was my face freezing so I've added an old cloth Covid mask to my gear. I'm very sure that I could survive a bad night in a shelter, BUT I'd rather watch the WX forcasts and head for town or a hostel than fight mother nature!! Peace!! 👍😎

@@frankdotyjr that sounds like a lot of fun! And an excellent idea to test out the gear. It’s definitely cold in those mountains. Cold as heck here. You could do it, just would not be very much fun. Have you ever watched videos by the outdoor boys? That guy is crazy. But you can learn a lot watching him. And using the mask to keep your face warm that’s a good idea. I would not have thought about that! Even though one time I did wear it outside hiking because it was so cold. It kept my face warm. And still breathable I might have to break out my old mask lol.

I'm going to be hiking the at as well starting mid March and am right near rochester as well. Wish you luck and I'm using north Hampton Park as a nice little training spot I don't think it'll be too far for you ok hills and actual trails
