Here's My TreadWright Review. In one year I ran MT Claw II's for 6k miles and Guard Dogs for another 6k miles. In this review I go over my experiences with TreadWright tires- both good and bad. The MT Claw 2's were my favorite off-road and the Guard Dogs have better road manners. I mention the Wardens at the end but I didn't run them.
I'm extremely grateful to TreadWright for the opportunity to review their tires. They make a great product- it just isn't for me.

I have seen a few videos of these Tread wright (TW) tires and thought that they would be great for my 2003 Dodge Ram 3500 dually 4x4. I also like the idea of American remanufacturing and buying American anything these days is a plus towards our countries economy. But before I bought them, I wanted to read the reviews on eBay. The negative comments mostly. The follow ups by the company made the comments sound like its the customers not doing there part to communicate with TW. So with that said, I felt that there is so many good thing about the company I would try them for myself. I carry heavy loads on the truck and pull heavily loaded trailers as well. The truck has been through a lot of tires over the years with 330K miles. So I ordered my T/W A/T tires off eBay. They show up faster then expected. Awesome! The first tire I see has little cuts on the side wall with a bulge on the side of it under them cuts. The other tires have some minor cuts on the beads and missing little pieces of the beads. Not to big of deal to me at this point, I have had a lot of tires with big sections of beads torn off and still sealed them up with no leaks. So I notified TW ASAP, email. I also ordered a seventh tire just incase this took a while for TW to get this corrected. So I had the tires installed. Well the one tire with the bulge is a big deal. Waiting on a reply. Well the other three back tires are not riding on the center of the tire. The tires have tread lugs sticking up higher in some areas and lower in others, also riding on the outside edge of the tires only for some reason. The front two are fine, other then some minor bead tears that bead sealer fixed. They look great and all my rims are the same size and same width as well. So with many conversations back and forth with TW. They said they would not ship me four more tires, only take my six tires back. Well that screws me out of the mounting and dismounting twice at a cost of 440 bucks. So I said no, stand behind you product. You said they come with a two year guarantee. So send me four more tires, I will send the other four back. TW wouldn't do it. So I left a bad feed back. TW feed back followed up with, I didn't do my part of inspecting the tires. They also said They would have helped me in anyway. If I would have asked them, in there follow up! I say B.S. This isn't far for people looking to buy these tires from TW on EBAY. So I contacted eBay about the tires and there answer to my emails and there answer on the bad feed back. Now eBay has read every email I sent to TW and TWs emails they sent to me. EBAY is refunding me my money. EBAY is now dealing with TW on there own. But this is the kick in the pants. I could have sold the hell out of these tires for them. If they were just honest and stood behind there product. So much for Supporting a American Remanufacturing company. TW live and learn!

Wow I'm so glad I found your video before I bought a set for my AWD SUV really the most informative tire education I've found and I have looked for 3 yrs to better understand the difference in types of tires for on and off road NOW thanks to this video I understand why I had to replace my entire front end tie rods sway bar control arms bushings and probably gonna have to replace my struts too . I would have bought these tires had I still lived in the Sierra's on a mountain that had a few miles up a very bad unpaved road to get to my house and a true 4 seasons with heavy snow in winter but now I live near the beach and despite also having mountains ( santa Cruz mountains) I rarely ever go off road anymore so I don't think I need the extra tread now as I mainly drive on freeway or at worst some poorly paved bumpy roads but still paved Thank you for the useful and much needed info because now I will be better able to choose the right tire for my car how I drive it and needs for the roads traveled and type of suspension I have . I had no idea there were so many important variables that must be considered when choosing tires for your car . As a 60 yr old woman on my own I'm so so deeply GRATEFUL you put this video out.

Balance bags if your having issues with balancing. Especially on anything 35"+ tires. I have the MT Claw II 35x12.5R18 10ply on my F350. Are they noisy..yeah but I haven't had the shaky steering issues either. That is attributed to the amount of wheel weights. I have over 10yrs in the tire industry and seen every situation from passenger tires to commercial new tires and recaps and remolds. Did any of the tire installers attempt to spin the tires on the rims 90 to 180 degrees? Sometimes its actually the balance of the rim/tire combo that causes that effect. I'm running 3.75 oz of balance bags in each tire. No wheel weights what so ever. Try it sometime. And thanks for a great thorough review.

@@dirtbikewrecker4475 Its something your going to need to request. And not all tire shops do balance bags. You have to ask around various shops. Most commercial tire shops should carry them.

@@AZTrucker Not unhappy with the TW's, but having busted tires (before aluminum was a thing) never heard of balance bags (no computers in the shop back then all analog - points and caps). I like that TW is American and hope they succeed - so you should contact them if this is a real fix.

Let me add another update to another set I just had mounted a little over a month ago. We put 6oz balance bags in each as 3oz wasn't enough on this new set. I had them spin the tires on each rim 90 and it balanced out. Sometimes you have to play with the tire on the rim before you slap more weights. In my case it took doing both.

Thanks for the review, I have heard many opposing viewpoints on these tires and decided to go with the CLAW II in 35". one thing I noticed right away was the weight. These things are HEAVY. Mine balanced with only 1 oz on each tire. I've been driving with them for several months now and had none of the issues on my 09 JKU that you mentioned. Like you said, they perform exceptionally off-road. I live in Sierra Nevada and they kill it out here. They are noisy on the road. I'm on the fence about using them again...

I have 285/75R17 Gaurd dogs on my 08 1/2 ton Ram. I also purchased the “blemished” version. I’ve had good luck with a them biting good off-road. They do get noisy and shake a little at 80mph on the highway. I’ve had them a little over a year and a little less than 10K miles. I bought them knowing they may have issues being a retread tire. With that being said I’m am happy with the purchase I made.

So if i get wobble i can send them back for a new set. Thank you for your review! I was honest and that is what i like in a review. i wish i had seen it before I bought the tires and i would have spent an extra 40 bucks per tire for Cooper Pro tires.

Sounds like a good tire for my vintage Ford Bronco since it doesn't see much highway use and just for casual cruising on back roads and trails. Thank you for the unbiased, informative review! I also had a set of Wardens installed on my DD Toyota Tacoma pickup and so far so good, but we shall see how those do in the long run. It gets mostly highway miles but sees a lot of snow and ice in winter.

Buddy's of mine and I have used treadwrights, I am using the Warden (blem) on my GMC Jimmy they have 15k miles with a lot of life on them still. I mounted and balanced them myself , all the tires needed less than 10 oz to balance per tire. They have been incredible for me ,I use them on 60/40 mud and trails / highway. My friends used the mud claw atg and guard dogs. No problems out of the atg and the guard dog but lots of problems with the mud claw wearing out on the highway. He has them on his farm truck, it's barely used on the road and they have been supreme.

I just wore out a set of mt claws 265/75X16 E, these were 75 lb. tires on an Isuzu trooper rs. My buddy mounted them in the company shop and used balancing beads. No weights on my factory rims, and I ran them as low as 6 psi, and as high as 80 psi. I never had a flat, only rotated them twice, never aligned it, never broke the beads for any reason. 35,000 miles, I can't wait to see what those little ceramic beads look like. I just ordered a set of guard dogs, because they don't make the claws in 35".

So hopefully this will be a good investment for me. I don’t mind a loud tire. I used to have a Bronco w/ 40” TSL Superswampers. God willing i won’t have the suspension and steering issues you had since i don’t have such a large tire.

I ran my set of Mt Claws 2's for 6 months on my 1995 Jeep Cherokee XJ the front two tires went down to 1/32 of tread in under 6 months. I sent Treadwright a message about asking will the warranty for off road cover them. And they said NO, They will not hold up the warranty that I paid for. So I went with a different set of tires. I had 3 shops attempt to balance MT Claws and non of them could get them balanced. Off road wise they do great, snow I was surprised. Somethings are just too good to be true for the price.

Great Review. RESPECT! Your experiences mirror what many who I personally know who are small scale gypo loggers and off roaders, great traction in the rough, rougher than hell on suspension parts, noisy, n very hard to balance, (AND KEEP IN BALANCE DUE TO UNEVEN TREAD AND OUT OF ROUND). Great traction for all off road conditions and not worth crap as daily drivers. Buy good quality road and mud, from any f'n company, foreign or domestic sited, for everyday, mount these on toy 4×4 drive the hell out of em there, but do it there, and replace with everyday tires for drive there and back if over 60 miles each way. Why? Because most likely you will not notice difference on highway than when on most irregular, rutted, boulder strewn and gutted roads. Great play tires for serious toys. Sorry folks, and.but since when has Made in America, other than military and civilian hardware (and we use foreign owned firms even there,), been a mark of quality and honesty by workers or employers, compared to foreign firms? Long gone days of a man's word being sealed by a handshake being tantamount to swearing on the Bible in court, and while between some men, (not males and damn fewer less females) still take personal pride in giving word, "Buisness is Buisness" and " Buyer Beware" and "A Sucker is born every Second" is law of land. Many Americans make and sell domesticly sited foreign owned Corporate goods that have replaced cheap shoddy and shyster old American firms, and did it not just by more effecient equipment but making the human portion, American laborer, mostly unable to f things up. There are many conscientious workers that take pride in workskills but take a look around and you see damn fewer people at sites than one did years ago, only the best of best remain and deserve their pay. American wage earner can only do the job management assigns them, if management and process is F'd up so are products, and most likely have untrustworthy owners of firms. One cannot depend on employees to keep firms honest, only the buyers of their products can and the internet helps, but viewers beware. Todays American "Good ol Boys" are just as likely to kick your wife and rape your dog as are Arab terrorist,

Dodge truck and jeeps with the coil front ends have issues with wear and wobble shake. Any time you put bigger wider heavier tires on them you will drastically decrease the life of the front end. Especially if the wheels have alot of offset. I tried a set of tread wrights on a 4wd dodge with a diesel and yup they (static) balanced ok but after a few hundred miles two were shaking and were impossible to balance. Tread wright sent 2 more free. I do a lot of freeway driving and on a hot day they would get soft and sticky like a race tire and wear fast . I got maybe 20,000 miles and they were done. Cost per mile there just not worth it in my opinion. I replaced them with Falkens mt's 285 75 16 and have about 30,000 on them and will probably get another 15,000 - 20,000 out of them. cost $750 mounted and balanced. The soft rubber on the treadwrights maybe good for rock crawling in the desert? PS the falkens dont shake

I have had a set of Guard Dog 35's for over 1.5 years now on my JKU. I haven't had any issues with them. I do need to rebalance one of them. The tire shop did say they took a lot of weight and were a little tricky to balance, but they got it done. I have never tried to air down due to them saying it isn't recommended. I put 5 on and rotate the spare so the "hit or miss thing" means all 5 were a hit for me. My next set will be the same, I will most likely put a set on my wife's Nitro.

With the sticky compound of the guard dogs if your alignment is off just a little bit the tires will fight with the steering and suspension constantly and everything wears faster than it should. Keep the alignment good and these issues are kept at bay...

thanks for the review, i have been on the fence about treadwright and i think this review finalized my decision not to go with them. im using them for a mostly on road application, basically we get alot of snow and i live on a dirt road that dosent get plowed regularly nor do a lot of places i need to be for work, so i really need to be functional in deep snow. i drive a 14' box truck that is terrible in the snow. but i also dont want to change to winter tires every year and have the associated costs. i thought these would be good with their winter kedge option, but i really need them to function for a lot of highway / city miles in the summer too. i also have about $15k worth of tools in my truck and if i got into an accident because of the tires it would be terrible. i think these would be good tires for people primarily going off road, but they just don't seem worth the risk for a mostly on road application. i am still thinking about a set for my plow truck however, i feel they would be great for that.

With my Warden ATs just about everything you can imagine from just about every region of the US. Pavement, dirt roads, rock roads, sand, mud, rocks, snow, ice. Aired down as low as 8 psi in some places too. She is covered in pin stripes from 26 states at last count and spent lots of time in Northeast winters, Southeast summers, Northwest springs. The Wardens have performed pretty much identical to the BFG AT's they are modeled after and I used to run exclusively. So they are pretty good at a lot of things but suck bad in thick mud, do better than average in sand and powdery snow, got some pretty gnarly gouges banging around the hot rocks in AZ, etc. She is transitioning now to more of a dedicated trail rig in the Sierra Nevada region so I wanted to give the Guard Dogs a shot this time around. My experience with communication from the company has been consistently stellar as well. From their posts in various social media formats they really seem to make an effort to identify quality control issues and try to fix them. They have earned my loyalty as a great environmentally beneficial, affordable, seemingly customer oriented organization. As long as they keep striving to improve their process quality and consistency they will keep me as an outspoken cheerleader for them even though I don't get a dime of support from them. Maybe they will reach out to me one day and offer some swag! :) I'll be sure and check back in here on your channel in a few months after I've had some time thrashing these new tires. I drive the ever loving snot out of this truck so I can't wait to see what shape they're in six month down the road. When we get the sheet metal work down to clear the 35's I'll put some videos on my channel to give my feedback on the performance of these meats.

Only thing I can recommend is if you run these tires loaded . Keep a food spare on hand

I have 60k on my guarddogs i have kind of a love hate relationship with them. The are amazing off road, however they heavy as heck (my 31" guard dogs weigh more than my 35" tracgrips) so they kill steering joints and suspension parts. But they took a direct hit when i was tboned by a camary and not only saved my truck from major damage but came out unscathed. I do have 1 very out of round tire (over 1/4" of tread difference between top and bottom) but i kept it on the back for most of the 60k so vibration is minimal. All in all i was going to buy another set last week, but now they cost only $4 less than federals of the same size. So that got me wondering so i looked around and ended up getting thunderers for 200 less than guard dogs in the same size.

Great review Brandon, love the channel. Were your KO2's 35's also? For some reason I thought they looked a tad smaller. I've got 50k miles on my Jeep and switched to 35's on my Jeep about 8000 miles ago. Just had to replace my drag link and I'm sure I'll need to replace ball joints and tie rod before the end of the year. Any chance that's from 35 inch tires in general or do you think it's specific to those tires? Went with Nitto Ridge Grapplers myself. Thanks for the reviews! Always enjoy the vids.

Thanks for watching, Jonny. My KO2's are 34x10.5r17 and typical of BFG tires they run smaller than their advertised size (they measure 32"). You bring up a good point and I did take that into consideration.Larger & more aggressive tires do wear components faster than stock tires. However, things I had just upgraded had to be replaced. My Synergy tie rod was a year old and both ends were loose. What astounded me the most was even my new Synergy ball joints were bad after only 4k miles on them. I expected the drag link to eventually fail as it was stock, but my steering box was unexpected. I've tightened the adjustment screw ontop of it and there's still a bunch of play in it, but at least I'm not white-knuckling the steering anymore. All that to say, I did expect my steering to wear from 35's but everything wore substantially quicker than they should have. How are the Ridge Grapplers working for you?

Berserker Offroad Ridge Grapplers have been great overall except going up a steep slick/wet trails. Another Jeep going up the same steep slick trail with the more aggressive Falken Wildpeak MT 35s seemed to do considerably better. I've only had them on for about 6,000 miles but I've been really happy with them. Super quiet.

My TW GD's were good for a few years and an overall value (Guard Dogs) on my rubi JK dr, my daily driver until the kids growed and bought a rubi 4d jl. Once I did not drive the 2dr (soccer practice, tennis, wrestling etc - needed 4dr for other kids), got death wobble. Swapped Tie Rod and Drag bar (aluminum Rock Krawler cracked anyway) - still death wobble (bearings ball joints still tight, upgraded track bar bolts etc). Balance on tires is so bad - they are square I admit from only being run one a week across town. If I only was on dirt - not an issue. Looking at Patagonias to replace them on JK, and them upgrade on the JL 4d if they work out.

I just purchased two Lt245/75 16 mt claw2 premiere tread for the rear of my GMC 2500HD 2WD. They will receive about 65% highway miles. I will inform further once I've driven on them. The reason im not running 33x10.5s is by recommendation from a friend, who has run multiple sets of treadwrights on his f250, that said if i stay 265/75 or less i wouldn't have any mounting or suspension problems. If anyone has had problems out of the smaller sizes please let me know.

At least you got them for free, I actually paid for my set. Ordered 4 tires and with warranty replacement, I've had 9 tires sent to me and I just gave up trying to make these tires (guard dogs) work. Saving up money and going to go with a proper tire manufacturer. Had the same issue with a step between tread lugs and I would get a nasty thump as tires would roll at any speed. I even had one tire tread separate on me as soon as I got up to highway speed and almost caused me to loose control. Never again will I buy or recommend Treadwright tires to anyone.

The tires had an effect on your ball joints on if you changed your rim width. That's about it. Especially nothing to do with your pitman arm on your steering box. I'll be honest, I'm both relieved and let down by this review. I wanted so badly to go with these tires. They are far less expensive than anything else, and i like the recycled nature of them. It's a huge perk to be able to reuse something as wasteful as a tire, but my truck is my daily driver, and I need something that won't destroy steering components or need constant remounting. A set of tires from treadwright for my truck would be around 700-800, and to get the new tires I have been looking at will run 1500 shipped. If it was just premature wear, then I wouldn't worry just for the price, but steering components are more expensive than tires would save if you are replacing all of it.

Wow. In the world of truck driving they are called "recaps". Been driving trucks since the early 80's and recaps have been around for a long time. But they have always been illegal to run on steer axels. Here's why, it is very common for recaps to "throw a tread". Going down the road a recap will sometimes have imperfections in the vulcanization so road heat causes them to flip the whole tread off. When you see a semi tread on the side of the road (truckers call it an alligator), that was a recap! Very common for them to be used on trailers and sometimes they last the full life of the tire, but I would not put a retread on any rig of mine that sees highway use. Definitely not on a steer tire.

I've seen an almost equal amount of people say these are great tire and those that say they are horrible. I was looking at them and the price is great They are definitely cheap. However I do a lot of highway driving and those I have seen with issues are blowouts or tread seperation which can be catastrophic. I think these fall into the category "you get what you pay for." If your truck is a strictly off-road vehicle than these probably aren't that bad. If you're going to be driving over 40 miles per hour then do you really want to trust your safety and life to recaps? I know I don't. I'd rather spend a little extra and get a quality new tire. 🤷🏻‍♂️
@4WDriver
@4WDriver 5 жыл бұрын
Sorry man, but as a former tire technician, and holder of an Associate of Automotive Technology Degree, I have to disagree with some of your points of view. You cannot say Tread Wright tires are not good on road because your particular set were out of round, and/or took a lot of weight and we're difficult to balance. I have installed MANY sets of BFG's, Toyo's, Good Years's, Dunlop's and, yes, even Michelin tires in larger off road sizes, and they ALL are prone to have issues like you described. It is just the nature of the animal when you are talking about tires larger than 32", especially on smaller wheel diameters like 16". There is just more rubber, more cords and plys, and even with modern manufacturing processes, it is difficult to get a super high level of consistency in regards to overall construction uniformity. Sometimes you get really good ones, other times you might get worse. Also, out of roundness has more to do with how the tires were stored before they got to you, than it does the manufacturing quality of the tires. If they were stored standing vertically (the same orientation as they would be when mounted on a vehicle) they can become out of round, or egg-shaped. Additionally, being 8 oz. out of balance is RIDICOULOUS. If they were actually so far out, that would have ripped the steering wheel out of your hands at highway speed, and literally beat the hell out of your suspension, as well as your kidneys. 8 oz. Is HALF A POUND! Not to mention there are loads of things that can affect tire/wheel balance, such as foreign materials (mud) caked into the back of the wheel or chunks of tread having been ripped off from hard use off road. One last thing: The noise you recorded in your Jeep toward the end of the video was NOT tire whine. It was much too high pitched to be that. You have other drivetrain issues in your Jeep, possibly bearings in your diffs, transfer case, or transmission. I can't believe the number of people you have turned off to buying these tires, which are a quite environmentally responsible option, just with your under-informed opinion. I am not saying you didn't experience what you say you did; just that it doesn't mean what you seem to think it does. Please don't jump to conclusions without proper facts in the future, sir, and have a great day.

Thank you for your lengthy and sensible response. Regardless of how they were stored, the tires were still misshapen and had terrible on-road manners. My steering wheel was, in fact, shaking violently. On neither set could I drive highway speeds without a shaking Jeep. I did not proclaim all TreadWright tires were bad or faulty. Many users of their product enthusiastically tell me they love the tires. I've also heard from an equal number of people that were delivered defective tires- out of round, exposed belts, chunks missing from the tires, tread flaking off, etc. But I only shared my experience with them, which was poor after two sets of different treads. 8 oz. is what I was told by the tire tech at 4 Wheel Parts, and it was a single tire. The other three were off by 3-4 oz. I was truthful with my experiences. I consulted several tire technicians like yourself, and installers, before releasing this video, and they agreed that the tires I had were defective. One tech told me he'd never seen his tire balancer wobble so badly. In the end I stand behind my conclusion and I caution anyone that is considering these tires. Thank you again for your insight- it's nice to have a well-rounded comment like this opposed to some that get caught in KZfaq's profanity filter.

@@Berserkeroffroad , thanks for a respectful, level headed response. You are right that it is a rare thing these days to deal with someone who doesn't fly off the handle with disrespectful language and a poor attitude. It's also nice to see someone capable of holding up their end of the argument with more clarification and real-world information instead of made-up BS, so thank you for that as well, sir. I would just like to reiterate that I am in no way claiming you didn't experience what you say you did, and I would also like to further clarify some of my points. In regards to tires being out of round and that being mostly a storage issue, I wasn't meaning that gets Tread Wright off the hook at all. Seeing as they ship direct, and you are not buying them from a retailer, Tread Wright is responsible for how their tires are stored. I was just pointing out it's not really a "defect", but a result of mishandling. This just means that it can, and does, happen to a lot of other tires, including brand new ones. Also, if they did get your Tread Wrights to finally balance out before installing them, any shaking was likely due to out of roundness. Also, if they were calling the tire defective due to requiring 8 oz. to balance it, I would say that's a fair conclusion, but that would only be that one. The best way to avoid getting tires that may be out of round is to get recently produced ones. Check the DOT stamping for date code. I would not accept any that were approaching a year old. Also, keep in mind there's yet another problem with tires that have been sitting around a while since being produced (or remoulded in the case of Tread Wrights): the time spent in storage counts against the RMA's recommendation to not run tires older than 6 years. I did not set out to tear you down or anything like that, so I hope you didn't take my critique too hard. I simply wanted to point out you should have included some of the statements you made in your response to me, clarifying that this is just what happened in your experience with the tires you were delivered, and doesn't necessarily mean Tread Wright tires are no good, and also explain a bit as to why you may have experienced the problems you did, instead of leaving people to think all Tread Wrights will make their vehicle shake. Just to clarify for anyone who may think so at this point: I am not a Tread Wright fanboy. I have not even had any personal experience with the tires. I would just like to see an American made upstart brand get a fair shake, especially since they seem to be a bit more environmentally responsible option. I don't fault you for not wanting to keep those tires on if they were shaking your Jeep apart, I just wish you had made it a bit more clear to your audience ALL the possible reasons why it could be happening, instead of leaving them thinking the tires are crap without a fair evaluation. The second set (Guard Dogs) you said seemed good when first installed, and then they started shaking later after some off-road use. This was most likely due to pieces of tread being chunked off during off roading, and possibly also mud and stuff caked onto the back side of the wheel, or possibly even having thrown a wheel weight. These are all things that could happen to any set of tires. If you've had better experience with your BFG's, that's awesome, but it probably has more to do with luck than tire quality. Now if there are people who have documented cases of receiving tires in the condition you mentioned (cords exposed) that would definitely be a major concern. However, if it's merely an opinion on the internet, remember, people like to exaggerate quite a bit for dramatic effect. In summation, I will concede that there was likely an issue with your first set. Most likely an out of round issue. But the Guard Dogs were probably just fine, you just happened to have gone through an off road situation that left them worse for wear, which could easily happen to any tire. I roasted a decent BFG Rugged Trail tire on my '96 ZJ, on a relatively mild obstacle where it was up on a rock face in a dry Creek bed I was turning around in. The rock face happened to be basically the exact right texture to act like a freakin' cheese grater on my tire, and with only very minimal spinning, it was basically bald, and it was done unevenly, so ride quality issues ensued as a result. Hope you have better luck with your BFG's (if that's what you switched back to), and sorry if I seemed a bit hard on you. Have a great day, and be safe out there.

And your feedback is exactly what I asked for in the video. I'm just one person with my own experiences that happens to have a platform to share it on. Having others contribute their knowledge and insights only betters the community.

I've been running TreadWrights in 33" for 3 years now on 2 different sets. TW customer service is unbeatable based out of Texas and anytime I've had any inkling of an issue they've been able to resolve it immediately and above my expectation.

4wdriver you are so wrong, I have owned Claws and Dogs. They all got tons of weights and some had one pound (yes one) plus the violent blowout and 3 more bulges. (All 4 were flawed big time.)
