Wickam NEVER intended to marry Lydia. He was very accustomed to sleeping around, gambling his money away, going into massive debt, and running away without paying. He would have done the same to Lydia, which Darcy knew, so he forced Wickam to marry her by offering to pay off his massive debts. This way, Lydia's reputation would be preserved...mostly...and in turn, Darcy protected Elizabeth and her family. Wickam ran away with Lydia because she was an easy target for his temporary lusts. In the end, he paid for that by being stuck with her immature and bothersome ways for life. The book says they never mature, and Lydia continues to write Lizzy and beg for money periodically.

I think maybe Wickham took the gamble. he saw the growing affection between Lizzy and Mr. Darcy and thought it was a good time to make a move on the family to force Darcy into rescuing them by throwing around some money. paying off his debts and providing a living for them. maybe he expected more than he got, but I think you're not giving his wickedness enough credit 😄

And Lydia never suspects how close she was to total ruin, because she was so young. She didn’t realise that if she had been left by Wickham, she had two options: being helped by her family, hidden away in a quiet place for the rest of her life, or being a prostitute in London.

@@TsuliwaensisI agree. Wickham knew what he was doing running off with Lydia. He was determined to get his pay day from Darcy and used Lydia to get it, knowing full well how Darcy felt about Lizzie. Wickham was a con artist and very good at manipulating people.

Indeed! Wickham did not care about Lydia or her reputation. He did not care for anyone but himself and his own pleasure. Lydia was young, careless, naïve and impulsive (and quite non mannered and obnoxious). He took advantage of her. She didnt even have a clue. She wanted to have some fun and adventure and thought that Wickham would mary her/take care of her/that she was special for him/that she was the first sister that found a husband. She never learned the hard reality, because mr Darcy stepped up and saved the whole situation. If he had not, she and her family would have been ruined, but she will always be under the impression that she did well 😂. Still, she was like 15 in the novel I believe? (How many 15 year olds can do rational thinking). Wickham was the true evil A hole.

To be fair they were not talking about Scotland as a way to get her far away and hide her. Scotland has different laws than England and you could get married younger without your parents consent in Scotland than England (you still can to this day). So as Lydia was under 18 she could not marry Wickham in England, but you could get married at 16 in Scotland. So "going to Scotland" meant they were going to a place they could get married, and then after being married return home. As Wickham took her straight to London though it proves he never intended to marry her. There is a place just over the border in Scotland called Gretna Green, it became a place where lots of young English people came to get married when their families refused to give consent. It is still a wedding venue now, but a bit like Las Vegas in terms of wedding notoriety.

Your suspicions are correct about Wickham and Lydia being intimate. The book doesn't say it outright, but it's definitely implied. The sad thing is that Lydia seriously believes that she'll be marrying Wickham sooner or later when he had no intention of doing so. Lydia is lucky that Darcy found them at all, it's scary to think about Wickham just up and leaving her in London with no help or money, and she'd definitely be a social outcast by then.

Not quite. Darcy had a strong suspicion on how to track Lydia from his past experience with Wickham. Georgiana had a governess who had conspired with Wickham when he attempted to elope with Georgiana. Darcy knew where to find that woman. There was high probability she would know Wickham's current location. She would have no choice but to inform on Wickham knowing Darcy could do serious damage to her reputation. If not that, then she could almost certainly be bribed. And actually Lydia is safe from Wickham. It is enough that the wedding took place. Even if Wickham dumps Lydia, Darcy will ensure she is never destitute for Elizabeth's sake. That charity will come with strings attached. Lydia would have to remain at some distance from her sister's happy home. In the epilogue, Elizabeth makes progress knocking some sense into Kitty and Elizabeth wants to keep Kitty shielded from Lydia's reckless influence.

In the book Wickham tells Darcy that it is Lydia's own fault that she chose to go with him. He had been responding to her flirtation and clear interest in him because he enjoyed the attention and didn't mind the idea of possibly getting into her pants (even though he's a grown man and she's a notedly "silly" fifteen year old, which, ew) and he found himself needing to leave anyway because he can't pay his debts and is at the point of getting dishonorably discharged from his position as an officer. He doesn't care about Lydia at all, but since he's got to go and hey, she's offering, he lies to her that he wants to elope and takes her along essentially as a plaything.

This miniseries has a special place in my heart. My eldest son turned me on to it. We watched it together (on vhs!) and our absolute favorite scene was Darcy's first proposal. At one point in that scene, when she rebukes him and calls him ungentlemanly, Colin Firth's reaction/look on his face is such fantastic acting! It was almost as if she slapped him with those words! After we finished watching this miniseries, my son (age 17) went to the library and borrowed the book, so I could read it! Two years later, my son passed from injuries he received in a car accident. I bought this book and the DVD set of this miniseries and I watch it/read it every year. It brings bitter sweet feelings now, but I do still chuckle to myself that, as I read it, I get so caught up in the story. My son used to laugh at me about it back then. It's a way to carry on on something that we shared when he was here.

If you'd like another Jane Austen treasure, I would like to recommend the 1997 film version of "Persuasion" starring Amanda Root, Ciaran Hinds, and Fiona Shaw. I've watched several film versions of Austen's novel "Persuasion" and this is by far the best cast and acted. The book is wonderful as well. Thank you so much for reacting to this (1995) version of "Pride and Prejudice"! I know you really liked the film version starring Keira Knightley, but I hope you've enjoyed this version as well. 🙂 P.S. And yes, Lydia and Wickham were intimate. But even if they weren't, the mere act of being alone with a man all that time would have been scandalous.

Caroline Bingley is a piece of work for sure! She knew that Lizzy caught Darcy's attention and was a threat to her, since she planned on getting Darcy to marry her so she could help to cement the Bingleys' transition from being nouveau riche to established old money. Caroline is a great example of trying to make herself look good but in the process only shows how horrible she actually is
@valkyriesardo278
@valkyriesardo278 5 ай бұрын
I like to think Caroline helped to persuade Darcy to discard his objections to Elizabeth. Both Caroline and Darcy were elitist snobs. They share a sneering giggle in the opening scenes. As Darcy's admiration for Elizabeth increases, Caroline's insults begin to grate on him. The constant petty denigration makes Caroline ugly in his eyes and he becomes repulsed by that same trait in himself. Caroline was a mirror for Darcy and he did not like his reflection. Since he is unable to deny those fine eyes, he must then resolve his inner conflict by denying his objections. I think it was Asimov who said, "When faced with a contradiction, check your premises, one of them is sure to be false."

Loved your reaction. I am glad in this series we got to see Darcy actually change and admit how wrong he had been and give Elizabeth credit for guiding him to become a better man. He wasn't socially awkward or "on the spectrum" - he was oblivious to his own arrogance and haughtiness and perhaps overconcerned with maintaining the dignity of his economic status. I happen to think the fact that his father had died 5 years prior, leaving him at a somewhat young age with the great responsibilities of his large estate and his sister's care - it pushed him to see himself with undue self-importance and overly picky approach to courtship. And no father around to guide him through this stage of life. Also, like you, I really appreciate the brilliant acting and subtlety Jennifer Ehle brought to this role, keeping Elizabeth Bennett appropriate for her era's expectations and the maturity and insight she possessed, while still having that extra sparkle and wit.

Wickham had a lot of debts and had to leave. Lydia was there, she was young and attractive and a twrrible flirt, always throwing herself at him. So he asked her to come with him....because he was horny and she was easy. That's it. I don't think he'd planned any further than that and of course promised he'd marry her to get her to come with, but he clearly had no plans to follow through. He would have left her ruined when he was bored of her until he was bribed to marry her and Darcy made him such a good deal he knew he'd never get such a good opportunity again. Living with a man unmarried was a horrible scandal and would have ruined the reputation of the entire Bennet family. But no I don't believe Wickham had any great scheme or plan to get money when running away with Lydia!

You may be right, but I've often wondered if Wickham ran off with Lydia at least in part to get revenge on Elizabeth. The last time Wickham and Lizzy spoke, if I remember correctly, she sided with Mr. Darcy and at least insinuated that she knew Wickham was lying. He seems the sort to be petty enough to want revenge for something like that. And there was Lydia, so young, naive, and willing; she was the perfect way to get revenge on Lizzy.

Wickham clearly wasn't much for long-term plans, otherwise he'd have asked Darcy for that 3000 pound payment to be invested without him being able to withdraw it, so he'd have had a guaranteed 120 pounds a year from the interest, rather than gambling away the full 3000 pounds in a year or two.

The regency period is known for the dresses to show off the chest, but not pushing up cleavage. If someone was rather small breasted, the foundation garments would have to do a lot of work to make things more visible, and that period went in the direction of softer looks (less rigid stays/corsets, as an example.) That dress design I know as an empire dress. The short jacket you see, the Spencer jacket, was used during the day, as could be shawls, which covered more. Other layers were used to cover up more as well. The neckline on evening dresses was allowed more to be open, not to mention richer fabrics, and more decoration. I love the empire dress, with its simplicity, and comfort. That said, the actor portraying Elizabeth had ample bosom. 🤓

I'd guess Miss Bingley's 20,000 pounds would be the minimum, or maybe even Miss King's 10,000. Not Lizzy's 50 pounds a year while her father lives, and 1000 pounds once her mother dies.

Wickham’s interest in Lidia Bennet is reflected upon by Elizabeth when she recalls Mr Darcy’s story of Wickham’s attempts to seduce Georgiana, “…she was then but fifteen years old…” It is, therefore, implied that Wickham’s has a sexual interest in post-pubescent but immature young women.
@korganrocks3995
@korganrocks3995 5 ай бұрын
I'd say the implication is that Wickham has a sexual interest in women, and finds immature young women easier targets. Remember that sex ed in this time was basically getting "the talk" from your mother the night before your wedding! As someone who has worked with hundreds of fifteen-year olds, I can tell you that the physical appearance varies from looking 10 years old to looking more womanly than most grown women. Hell, I once met a 30-year old woman who looks incredibly familiar, and after an hour or so I figured out that she looked like a shorter, younger version of a 14-year old student of mine! 😄

Like in the musical 'Oklahoma' when Ado Annie said that the peddler had proposed to her as well as Will, because the peddler said that he'd drive with her to the ends of the world in his cart, and she figured "well if we went this far it would take till sunset, so then we'd have to find a place to spend the night. And spending the night together means he wants a wedding, don't it?"

Dear Kemi, in the beginning, you said so many true things. Yes, women have come a long way since Pride & Prejudice had been written. On paper, we are treated as equals to men. In society, things are more complicated because they involve the feelings of people and their perception of the sexes, which are the result of upbringing and surroundings. Jane Austen`s views were modern for her time, and she was quite a rebel in her own life. In the 18th century, the novels women read were mainly written by men. What did men know about the complicated emotional life of women? In fact, how much do they understand women`s feelings in this day and age? Men don`t understand the complexity of our emotions, and women don`t understand the simplicity of men`s emotions where relationships are concerned. Women suffer because of certain things men don`t, and men suffer because of other things, women don`t. In 18th-century Western society, the idea of romantic love as a basis for marriage was only starting to bloom. Some embraced it but many young women were so used to the idea of a practical marriage and its advantages that they didn`t really care that much for romantic love. Many saw it as romantic fiction that existed only in novels. But most just couldn`t afford the luxury of being romantic, as Charlotte pointed out. But the majority of young women didn`t suffer because of marrying without love, at least not to the extent we would nowadays. We all know that love and love alone isn`t a guarantee for a successful marriage. Thank you for another lovely reaction, Kemi🤗❤ Greetings from sunny Slovenia 🌞

What had to be done was saving even 10% of their income every year for 20+ years in order to give their daughters some actual money, instead of spending every penny they earned on expensive food, wine, clothes, books etc. We know their carriage horses also work on the farm, so they somehow managed to not save anything despite being the richest family in the area, without even keeping a bunch of expensive extra horses. Another one of Austen's heroines has a 3000 pound dowry, despite her father being a clergyman with like 10 kids, yet the Bennets have saved nothing on a budget that's at least twice, and probably more like quadruple a clergyman's...
@Morrigan71
@Morrigan71 5 ай бұрын
@@korganrocks3995 The richest family in the area? Where do you get that? That title would likely have gone to the Lucas's before the Bingley's move in. Mr. Bennet's income is never mentioned that I can recall, but as a farmer, it wouldn't have been much, and nearly all of it would have gone back into feeding and clothing all of those women, and the farm to feed and care for the animals. Even if he had a bit to save, one bad storm or emergency would have drained it all. No way he could have provided dowries for all those girls. Clergymen were far better off than farmers. A farmer's income was unreliable and changed from year to year.
@korganrocks3995
@korganrocks3995 5 ай бұрын
@@Morrigan71Mr Bennet's income is mentioned in the book as being about 2000 a year, which is double the average for a landed gentleman. He's not a farmer, he's a "gentleman farmer", which means he(like Darcy) owns enough land for his manor house, extensive gardens, the "home farm"(which he does not personally do any work on), with enough land left over to rent out to multiple farmers, whose rent money is what provides Mr Bennet with his income. They were literal landlords originally, then knights were given land, then squires. A landed gentleman was also called a "country squire". Part of that 2000 pounds would go to the upkeep of the home farm and tenant cottages, food and clothing(although the home farm would provide a lot of the food). They dine with "four and twenty families", but I assume that would include clergymen and the tradesmen of Meryton, none of whom were earning even one thousand a year, let alone two. Sir William Lucas might be the highest ranked man in the area, but he was a tradesman who sold his store/company when he was knighted, because he felt his new title meant he should be a gentleman of leisure rather than a working man. We know from Mrs Bennet that Charlotte Lucas helps out in the kitchen, which the Bennet girls don't have to do, and their "manor" is called Lucas Lodge, which suggests that the house is either a converted hunting lodge or simply a newly built house too small to deserve a grander description. In short, while we don't know for certain that the Bennets are the richest family in the neighborhood, it's the logical assumption if you disregard whoever actually owns Netherfield, since the house seems to have stood empty for some time before Bingley leases it. They are definitely richer than the Lucases and 99% of the other people in the area and indeed the entire country.
@Morrigan71
@Morrigan71 5 ай бұрын
@@korganrocks3995 You can't say "definitely" without looking at the fictional "ledger books" and knowing what everything costs/all the money coming in and going out at their home as well as everyone else's. The Bennet's are clearly considered poor by all of the truly wealthy people in the novel. Mr. Bennet doesn't even own his home--it goes to Mr. Collins upon his death, which is NOT common among the other wealthy landed gentlemen, like Darcy, or even Mr. Lucas, and the major reason he can't provide for his wife and children. Most men would at least be able to leave them a home. If he had been able to save anything, it would have had to go into buying them another house, not dowries. And none of those other families are expected to provide FIVE dowries because they don't have five daughters. You're blaming Mr. B for a lot of things you can't prove/don't know. Also...it is just fiction lol. If he could provide for them, we wouldn't have a story. Why not just enjoy it instead of slamming him as a sh1tty father because he can't do something most men in his position would have had trouble doing as well? It's very easy to criticize from a modern perspective.
@korganrocks3995

@@Morrigan71Mr Bennet is my favorite character in the novel, but I'm not blind to his flaws. As you said, if he was a good parent, there wouldn't be a story. You're the one making huge assumptions that would be understandable if all we had to go on was the 2005 movie, but what we actually have is the information provided by the novel and by historical record of incomes, expenses etc for a family in that position, all of which provides evidence for the failure of both Mr and Mrs Bennet. Mr Bennet does own his own home, but his father, grandfather or some other ancestor decided to entail the property to the male line of Bennets. If Mrs Bennet died, Mr Bennet could marry someone like Mariah Lucas, who could spend the next 20 years popping out kids, and if any one of them was a boy he'd inherit Longbourn, and Mr Collins would be stuck in his parsonage for life. I'm telling you that 2000 a year is not poor by any metric for the time, they're literally part of the 1%. We know they're not in debt, and that they haven't saved any money, so that means they've been spending nearly every penny earned for over 20 years. For 15 or so of those years, none of the girls were out in society, so they can't even blame the cost of fancy clothes for not saving. As for what exactly they'd be saving money for, that's not entirely straightforward. Saving enough for Jane to have a season in London with a 10,000 pound dowry could lead to her marrying someone as rich as Bingley or Darcy, who could then provide for her mother and sisters, so as investments go that is the one with the most potential. Finally, the reason the Bennets are considered "poor" by the truly wealthy people in the story is because they have no disposable income, no dowries and at any time their father could die, and at that point their income will drop from the combined income of Longbourn and the interest on Mrs Bennet's dowry, to just the latter, which for 5000 pounds presumably invested in the 4% governement bonds, would be 200 a year. The main problem isn't their income, it's their connections to trade and their improper behavior. PS. I'm not pulling these numbers out of my ass, this has been one of my favorite books and tv shows for almost 30 years, and I've read and watched a huge amount of informative content about this story in particular and Austen's England in general. I promise that the Bennets didn't have pigs in the kitchen etc.

A few things: 1.) I definitely second you watching “North & South” (2004). Richard Armitage is so handsome in it! I love that miniseries! Also, if you’re going to watch any Jane Austen movies, I recommend the 1996 “Emma” with Kate Beckinsale and the 2007 “Persuasion” with Sally Hawkins. Everyone has their opinion on each version, but those are my favorites. 2.) In either the first or second episode you see Darcy getting out of his bath at Bingley’s house (when Jane was sick) and going to the window where he notices Lizzie playing with a dog and he smiles to himself. Well, in the fifth episode (when he’s walking down the hallway with portraits, holding a candlestick) you see two dogs run ahead and one of them looks like the dog Lizzie was playing with in the earlier episode. Perhaps Darcy was smiling to himself then because she was playing with his dog and he was already starting to admire her? 3.) The actors who played Lizzie’s parents were superb! 4.) I so appreciate your comments because they add so much depth which isn’t always the case on reaction channels. Your opinions and perspective are truly pleasant to hear. Thank you!

This was, BY FAR, the most compassionate analysis on Lady Catherine I've ever heard. What fascinating insight.

When mrs Bennet exclaims "Three daughters married! God has been good to us!" it has to be seen in the context of for examples napolionic wars with France, Brittish troups being engaged in wars in India, colonizing Australia or trading in South America etc. There were probably a shortage of eligible men to marry in England at the time this story is set in because young men died on the battlefields or were sent off to the other side of the world to prosper. So the competion for an eligible match were tough, especially when class narrowed suitble matches even more.

I am so so thrilled that you have watched this. I adore your commentary and analysis of the scenes and the actors. Colin Firth is one of thee best actors ever. His character in Bridget jones is based off of Darcy. It’s so fun to watch that now, after watching him in this. You can see the connections. He is one of the rare “eye” actors. They speak volumes. Not to mention his gorgeous soul. And he’s so damned sexy. 😂

I think the Mr COllins is at Jane and Bingley and Elizabeth and Darcy's weddings in spite of Lady Catherine's objections because when Mr Bennett wrote to him informing him of it he reminded him that Mr Darcy is richer than Lady Catherine - I think that's what the book said.

I think he said that Mr Darcy "has more to give", which could mean richer, could mean that he has more church livings to give away, or simply that he's younger and will be around a lot longer than Lady Catherine! 😄

What inspired Wickham to run off with Lydia? He had reached a point of critical mass with his regiment that was due to explode. He was in debt with local creditors and over his head in gambling debts. A man would not be scorned for owing money to a tailor, but a gambling debt was an inexcusable point of honor. Since Wickham could not pay up, his solution was to run. It seems Lydia's involvement was a spur of the moment and not premeditated. We're told all the local ladies including Lydia admired Wickham's charms. There had to have been some sort of meeting between Wickham and Lydia because she swears Kitty to secrecy before leaving town. Some speculate that Wickham's presumed elopement was aimed at Darcy for revenge or money. I think that is farfetched. I think Wickham too self-indulgent, lacking the discipline to plan and execute an elaborate scheme. Rather like Lydia, he lives within the moment. Since Lydia can never keep her lip zipped there could not have been a long advance plan. I think they simply bumped into each other, began to flirt, and the decision to run off was the result. Lydia would be enamored with the drama of the adventure and Wickham was an opportunist living by the seat of his pants.

Wickham had no morals and he always took the path of least resistance and chased instant gratification. If I recall correctly, Lydia being into him (and actually coming on to him) was just convenient fun for him and as he had to run away anyway from his debtors (things had gotten dire for him in Brighton as his debts were enormous), he did not mind company when on the run. He did not plan ahead, he had no clue about Darcy being interested in Elizabeth, he just took Lydia with him because of his lust, Lydia being willing, -- and having met the family -- believing her family to be not well connected and not of any consequence, so he could do that unpunished. Yes, he slept with Lydia and was already bored and annoyed by her. (Like her mother in her youth, Lydia did not have any depth of character, she had her looks and vivacious nature. Her mother was very lucky that a decent gentleman, Mr Bennett, was infatuated with her and married her before realising that she is not the person he believed her to be -- sadly it was a marriage of inequals in more ways than one. Mr Bennett's constant sarcasm and wit was to distance him from all of that and protect himself. Although, he has happiness in his life due to his two eldest daughters and all his books). As for Lydia, her marriage with Wickham was not a happy one -- while married, he continued with his drinking, gambling, philandering. Meanwhile, Mr Bennett was his happiest when visiting Pemberley, spending months with his most favourite daughter, became great friends with Darcy, and spent countless hours at Pemberley's remarkable library... And after Mrs Bennett had married off three of her daughters, we can only hope she calmed down a bit and allowed her to be happy. :) I definitely recommend North and South, this miniseries has many touching moments. Speaking of what options did poor gentlewomen have, one path to be able to support oneself was to become a governess. Now, governesses were higher ranking than mere servants, yet they were not equals of the family members. I would definitely recommend watching Jane Eyre. It takes place a few decades later than the Pride & Prejudice, the female protagonist is a strong woman with integrity. There are several adaptations that all have their own merits. Perhaps start with the one with Ruth Wilson and Toby Stephens (2006). The extended edition if possible (there is a shorter version that omits many important scenes). Oh, incidentally, there are also miniseries called "Lost in Austen" where a young woman from the 21st century London accidentally ends up inside the Austen's Pride and Prejudice book and messes up all the events, while Elizabeth has taken her place in modern London and thrives. In that version, Wickham turns out to be a good guy, Lady Katherine is formidable and very smart, Mrs Bennett is also rather smart when she shows her true face, and Mr Collins has several brothers who are so much worse than him...absolutely horrible 😂 As for the same era as Pride & Prejudice, there's Vanity Fair. All the characters are flawed and antiheroes, yet it is a fascinating story of a woman trying to get ahead in the society no matter what (and almost succeeding).

Lady Catherine wasn't insulting the grass (so I wouldn't put it past her). "Wilderness" is a gardening term. It refers to piece of woodland in a garden, despite the name it wasn't wild but carefully maintained to look like untamed nature - like a no makeup makeup look for your garden. They were very fashionable at the time.

Instantly subscribes! I'm still reeling from you watching this beautiful series, I'm just so happy you checked it out. That was a wonderful watchalong with you, thank you for that! And I've mentioned this before about the actress that played Lizzy and another Austen-period-set movie you really will get into... after this mini series came out, and because of it... when they were making the screen adaptation of the 1990 novel, Possesion, the casting department, the producers, and yeah, pretty much all of England (no, really) said there was no one other than Jennifer Ehle who could play one of the key characters. I hope you check out the 2002 movie, Possesion, it's so good. Also with Gwyneth Paltrow. -PRETTY PLEASE, lol.

I love your insightful commentary! It' s incredible to me how much of the nuance and subtext you pick up on without even having read the book. This series is truly brilliant for incorporating so much of that subtext that is present in the book. I watched it first too, then read the book after. You have a wonderful experience ahead of you if you' re planning to read it! I have read it a few times now and I still discover new insights and perspectives.

I am so glad you are enjoying this series! To complete your exploration of Pride and Prejudice, I strongly urge you to check out the 1940 version with Lawrence Olivier and Greer Garson, two HUGE stars of their era. It is still a great film -- and yet it is still different than the other two versions you have checked out.

You have to watch Death comes to Pemberley written by PD James. I love how she deals with what happens. She's was a wonderful famous writer. I also read a book about the Collins and I found it very interesting. In the book, Lady Catherine De Bourgh daughter stay single and Mr Collins wife Charlotte had a affair. The book is called Charlotte. It was credible, imaginative and funny.

Since you enjoyed watching the film and mini-series so much. Specifically the additional information the series provides. I'd recommend Sense & Sensibility 2008 BBC mini-series. It is 3 episodes, I believe. The screenplay is by Andrew Davies, same as this Pride & Prejudice 1995 series. It has all sisterly love and romance you'd love! My favorite adaptation. You can then compare the two and let us know which you like best. Another great sisterly period drama, mini-series is Wives and Daughters, 1999. 😊

There has been alot of speculation as to why Wickham targeted Lydia. Sadly tge widely held conclusion is that, he didn’t plan too. He was leaving, wanted some company of the female variety and Lydia was conviniently there, naive and flirtatious. She was an easy target.
@korganrocks3995
@korganrocks3995 5 ай бұрын
Yeah, Wickham tends to go for young, naive girls of the lower classes, who have no means of forcing him to take responsibility for the consequences of sex. Eloping with a gentleman's daughter is riskier, and he probably wouldn't have dared do it if he didn't think Mr Bennet too poor and lazy to be a threat. That said, Wickham isn't exactly known for good impulse control, so if Lydia threw herself at him he'd probably go along with it for instant gratification, even though it's an objectively bad idea.

It's been a while since I read the book, but I think Austen implies that Lady Catherine does come around to Lizzie eventually? Even though she seems to want everyone to be like Collins, a slave to her, actually she wants what we all want - a bit of life and liveliness. That's why she invites Collins more frequently once he has Charlotte, and even *more* when he has Lizzie staying. She likes Lizzie. Doesn’t want her for a neice, but even if it doesn't say it in the book, I think Lizzie brings everyone on board.

The way I remember it she writes such an insulting letter to either Lizzy or Darcy that Darcy goes no contact with her, until Lizzy eventually persuades them both to forgive and forget, and as you say, Lady Catherine doesn't want to sit alone all day with no one to talk at, so she comes around eventually.
