You'll notice throughout the series that Elizabeth's dialogue implies, rather than states things bluntly like she does in the film version. In the film they gave her some of Mr. Bennet's lines, and made her much more forthright in order to make her more relatable to 21st century audiences. Also, the film amps up the romance early on and softens Darcy's character. In the book and miniseries, Elizabeth is pretty repulsed by him after their first meeting, and the only reason she engages with him at all is because she's a smart woman who behaves well according to societal norms. It's her uncaring defiance, expressed in subtle, oblique ways, that draws Darcy to her like a magnet, since he's used to being fawned over. I know you're familiar with Jane Eyre, so I just want to mention that the feeling and aesthetic of the film is more in line with Charlotte Bronte than with Jane Austen. Austen doesn't really focus on romance, more on self-actualization in the context of the marriage market and money concerns. She pokes fun at people and society, and the sweeping romantic scenes usually aren't spelled out. So, being more true to Austen's tone and characters, the miniseries definitely isn't as blatantly "romantic" as the film (although I personally find the finale to be more touching without all the cinematic manipulation).

@@melanie62954 This adaptation and the Emma with Gwenyth Paltrow relies heavily on facial expression to reveal emotion, thought and the Austen sense of mirth (a picture is worth a thousand words). I love how Austen once responded when asked about why she presented the clergy in a poor light. She said that she and her mother loved absurd characters. Modern literature is all about “being true to onesself” “that’s the way I am” whereas Austen highlights the beauty and reward of personal growth. She wrote under a pen name because women were not supposed to make a living. Women from good families were not allowed a profession unless marriage is called one. Unmarried women were entirely dependent on male relatives. Apparently many men either didn’t fulfill their promises or were inept at money management. Their “work” was to marry rich and have babies, then fret over their unmarried daughters. The only way to dispel the bleak state of things was to marry for love and hope you were not fooled.

The idea that the BBC "just broadcasts" material ... even when it commissions or licenses it it now mandates "diversity targets" and explicitly favours "no white men" in lead roles. Subcontractors that fail to toe the line are not used. The BBC certainly has "more than one team" but in my own personal experience (and that of a couple of friends working for content providers) the brief is very clear. Were the BBC to commission P&P today there would be a lesbian affair, anachronistic black servants, and worst of all ... the now mandatory expositional monologues about oppression and the patriarchy. . . .

34:50 - Darcy wasn't snubbing Mrs Bennet because she was "poorer", but because she was crass and vulgar, talking about his money and throwing her daughters at him. He was showing her the cold shoulder, so she would stop pursuing him. Also, she addressed him before they were introduced (therefore Mr Bingley hurriedly trying to rectify the mistake), which was considered bad manners. Basically Mrs Bennet was disrespecting him first. The point here is that he is not "technically" in the wrong. But also he doesn't choose to be the bigger person, and be kind and polite even to people who are not polite to him, which is what a gentleman should do. This is opposed to Elizabeth's behaviour, who chooses to be polite and smooth things out, even with Caroline (at least until she reaches the breaking point at the proposal). And this is why I don't like the KK version, where Lizzy is sassy and claps back much more explicitly. There is no contrast in refinement and education between her and her mother, which in the book and in this series is very blatant.

So happy that you are watching this. Something that might help for differentiating this Elizabeth from 2005 version, is if you think of this Elizabeth as more mature and in control of her emotions to the standard expected of her, and Keira as more fiery and youthful and bucking standards. So you will have to search for Lizzie's emotions in her eyes and body, such as in the scene where her father says "your mother will never see you again if you do not marry Mr Collins. " She can't look him in the eye (she looks at him and then immediately looks away), she has her arms crossed - she's uncomfortable and angry, but still respectful and bracing herself, "And I will never see you again as you do" - when she looks at him again, it is prolonged, there is relief, she doesn't have to be afraid of what he is going to say. Her body relaxes, she lowers her arms, but she understands her mom has been humiliated so doesn't outwardly rejoice. There are going to be more situations when the outward display of emotion is going to play a factor in the comparison, but it is there - just expressed differently. This is a series that gets better and better everytime i watch because of how much is done with eyes and body movements that may be missed. She does this looking away from things that upset her in other times too, like when she is embarrassed after Sir Lucas interrupts her dance with Darcy and makes inappropriate comments. She can't look Darcy in the face at first until she collects herself.

You're so right. Movie Lizzy was played more like Marianne from Sense & Sensibility-- someone who wears their heart on their sleeve and shows big emotional swings. But Lizzy in this series and the book is actually very polite and follows society's rules of propriety, while also being witty and good-humored. It works for the movie, because you have less time to show that Lizzy is the kind of person who would stand up for herself and those she loves. They have to use bigger emotional swings and have her show more passion to get the point across in less time.

The added comedy to the card game chat is Caroline first says accomplished ladies are rare and hard to find but Elizabeth's retort get Caroline to claim there are many accomplished ladies. Darcy is fascinated by Elizabeth's intelligence and intrigued by her steady rejection of any compliments from him as when he talks about extensive reading- pointedly to praise her but she rejects it saying she is surprised he knows any accomplished women. Caroline picks up on none of those barbs but Darcy does and he is hopelessly intrigued by Elizabeth. I love this scene.

I'm sorry to tell you, but this is actually close to the novel. The movie was something else entirely, 'based' upon the novel and tailored for todays social norms, because Elizabeth wouldn't have ever approached Darcy at the dance in that manner in the early 1800s. Austen's novels were about class, society, and manners. But each person has their own opinion and a whole generation of people fell in love with the movie.🙂 I am loving your reaction! @@johnnehrich9601 Most people have no clue about the finer details ... because the scene where Darcy hands Elizabeth the letter after she rejected him is important, because SINGLE PEOPLE DID NOT WRITE LETTERS TO OTHER SINGLE PEOPLE THEY ARE NOT RELATED WITH! At best you could have your sister write to a girl you like ... and then add some lines. Having such a letter delivered by mail would result in people talking ... and thus it "wasnt done". There is also an important cultural mistake that was made in the miniseries, because "the highest ranking woman of the family" (Mr. Bingley's sister) was "running the household" and thus Mr. Bingley asking Jane Bennett to stay was wrong. In the book it was Miss Bingley ... and later on Darcy pushes his sister - who hasnt become accustomed to it yet - to invite Elizabeth and her aunt & uncle to Pemberley ... which was the correct depiction of the custom. This detail is important to counteract the feminist propaganda of "women were oppressed by men" ... when they were actually the rulers in the household (except for the library and/or gaming room).
@korganrocks3995
@korganrocks3995 4 ай бұрын
@@Muck006First off, just because women were the rulers of the household doesn't mean they weren't oppressed. Their husbands could legally rape and beat them, and were the head of the family and in charge of the finances. Letting women run the household while men worked and/or dealt with estate matters doesn't mean men considered women as anything more than second-class citizens. Secondly, while I agree with all your complaints about the 2005 movie and the finer details about Jane Austen's time period, you come off as combatitive and disdainful in the way you rant about these things. Ironically, you're giving off Darcy vibes, and as this story tells us, that's kinda off-putting.

Yes in many ways this book is comparing old money and status with new money that often lacked it. And how precarious both were discovering they could be, especially as women. The Bingley's have a much larger fortune that the Bennetts, this their ability to wear more expensive clothes and have had access to a governess and teaching in languages and the other things Caroline speaks of. But yeah In terms of Status and position in society, Elizabeth and all the rest of her family do outrank The Bingley's. Probably another thing which annoys Caroline about Elizabeth. But all that would change of course if they married a wealthy landowner.

I'm SO excited to see you reacting this this series!!! We certainly can't blame Mrs. Bennet for wanting good marriages for her daughters, but she's so tawdry and obvious about it, which is embarrassing to the girls and hurts their chances. Mrs. Bennet is from a working family (Mr. Bennet presumably married her because she was pretty and lively, and being an extreme introvert, he didn't care to exert himself outside his own locality to find a wife). In the book it's implied that the reason Jane and Elizabeth know how to behave better in society is because they spent more time with their Aunt Gardiner in their formative years and got a better education (probably because their poor mom had three toddlers to deal with). Also, the irony in the Bingley sisters grilling Jane about her pedigree is that, even though they are more rich, they are not landed gentry at all--that's why Bingley rents Netherfield. The Bingleys' father made his money in trade, so technically the Bennets are higher class. Bingley isn't snobbish about their rise in status, but the sisters put on airs like they have a better background than they do. And the reason Bingley relies so much on Darcy's judgment is because Darcy helped him as a young man transitioning into upper class society.

My favorite version of P&P! David Bamber is the best Collins! Despite the bumbling sliminess, you can tell that Collins is really flexing the power he has over the Bennet women since the entail favors him. Even though he says he wants to marry one of the girls out of the goodness of his heart and to prevent the family from becoming homeless, Collins is pretty much saying quietly "Be thankful that I'm choosing to come to you to find a wife and not anyone from my neighborhood." And he reminds Lizzy of this during his disaster of a proposal: he keeps saying "Oh I don't mind that you're poor, it's fine" when most likely, he DOES mind. And then to tell her that because she's poor, she's unlikely to get another proposal so she would be better off for her to marry him to save herself and her family despite the obvious mismatch in personalities and no love/respect?! Collins is so awful underneath that goofy exterior!

Right? Though I think the 2005 Collins is ironically (?) not too far from the book, closer even, when we remember, that age and look wise, he's supposed to be eligible to the girls, if plain, while 1995 Collins does appear to be older, too and not just in mannerisms. 😂 However - when it comes to the personality- 2005 is more the awkward type, while Bamber is awkward, boring and arrogant...The scene in which he asks to accompany Lizzy on the walk makes toenails curl😂😂😂😂😂

Yes. And I love that this series doesn't shy away from showing that. Mr. Bennet may be intelligent, witty, sarcastic, and funny, but he is a neglectful father and oftentimes a bad husband. The movie makes him more sweet and sentimental, which is just not true to his character.

I'm really enjoying your reaction to this. I know the movie gets a lot more attention, but to me this is adaptation perfection. I love your analysis of the characters and their motivations. Most people don't understand the financial pressure that a mother of five daughters would be under, especially when their home would go to a stranger after her husband's death. She's a silly character, but she knows the world.

I love how there's stages of getting to know Mrs Bennet: the first stage is laughing at her silliness, the second is realising she's right to worry about their future, and the final stage is facepalming when you realise that she and Mr Bennet have wasted 40,000+ pounds on fancy food/drink/clothes/furniture/jewelry over the course of their marriage, without ever saving a penny, even after she started popping out nothing but daughters. PS. The Bennets income of 2000 pounds a year would be somewhere between 200,000 and 3,3 MILLION dollars a year today, so even at the most conservative estimate, not managing to save ANY money in a 7-person household with no mortgage/rent to worry about, not to mention growing a lot of their own food, is pretty amazing.

You hit the nail on the head about the difference in the interpretations of Lizzy's character between Keira Knightley and Jennifer Ehle. Lizzy is supposed to be 20 years old in the book, and I'd say Ehle plays her as a super-smart and on-top-of-her-game 21-year-old. Whereas Knightley plays Lizzy as a 17-year-old - it's a more emotional, reactive, temperamental, immature interpretation. I dont think it's what Austen lovers were expecting, but it's still very believable, though.

What’s going on with Mrs. Bennet is that her husband’s estate is entailed. This is a legal construction sometimes put on estates that restricts who can inherit. Usually the point of this was to keep an estate within the family, and since by default, when a woman married her property became part of her husband’s family holdings, entails usually restricted women from inheriting. Because of that, there’s a common misconception that women in this era couldn’t inherit anything or own property. That’s not true; they simply couldn’t inherit if an estate was entailed. By Jane Austen’s era, entails were dropping in popularity, but the problem was, they could often last for generations, and to break an entail required a private act of Parliament, which was enormously expensive. So for most people in Mrs. Bennet’s situation, in order to ensure that your daughters weren’t left impoverished when their father died, you had to get them married off, or at least get one of them married to someone wealthy who could provide for any remaining unmarried daughters.
@vbrown6445
@vbrown6445 4 ай бұрын
Well, we know women can inherit as Mr. Collins hails Miss De Bourgh as being the heiress to Rosings Park. It is definitely a shame that Longbourn is entailed away from females and cannot go to Jane or even her first-born son, but instead must go to a distant cousin none of the Bennets had ever met until Collins came to their door. I totally get why Mrs. Bennet is so vexed by it.

Oh fun - nobody ever reacts to this version and apart from the beautiful cinematography in the newer version, I like everything better in this one so it’s a shame it doesn’t get reactions. I can see why people would like the emotions of the Mr Bennet talking to Lizzie after the Collins proposal in the new one, but I much prefer the fact that Lizzie in this one simply sees Collins as an annoyance rather than an emotional distress. Both Lizzie and her dad also I think share amusement at the ridiculous aspects of life (hence some of the quipping at Collins expense like “do you prepare these compliments ahead of time or do they just arise at the spur of the moment" are I think really Lizzie and her dad sharing inside jokes) So it never really seemed to me like Lizzie should have been worried about her dad getting onto her for refusing Collins as they both know he's a bit of a pompous fool that she'd never be happy with. His response is again just a poke at the ridiculousness of life (and the overly dramatic nature of her mother) that they can share as an joke rather than being anything really necessary for Lizzie's emotional wellbeing.

It may help to view the movie and this series as different things altogether. The movie romanticizes the characters, and focuses more on the romance aspect. While the series portrays the characters more fully, focusing more on character development and fleshing out the in between parts from the book, than the romance aspect (although we do get to see some romance). The movie they need to overly show emotion because they have to make the story progress quickly for the time frame, whereas they have about 6 hours for the series to develop the characters. Pride and prejudice is my favorite book of all time, and this series is basically what I pictured in my head while reading it for the first time. They take time and care to make it close to the book, even with the smallest details. Excellent casting, scenery, and storytelling. I can’t hype this series up enough.

This is without a doubt an absolute classic gem of a movie. And I'm so glad your reacting too it. This is one of my fav classic novels and I'm obsessed watching all the adaptions to some of my favorite classic novels such as Pride and Prejudice, Jane Eyre, Wuthering Heights, Romeo and Juliet, Little Women, Anne of Green Gables. And there are only certain adaptions I love the most to each classic. And this version of Pride and Prejudice is without a doubt the BEST version with Colin Firth as the handsome dashing Mr Darcy. Honestly, if you've seen alot of his interviews, you would know how charming, witty, funny and well spoken Colin Firth is snd how he was able to naturally step into his role as Mr Darcy. Honestly, him in that movie with the scene of him in a wet shirt is highly memorable. ❤️ Not to mention is fantastic performance and acting skills. I also encourage you to watch the 1980s version of Jane Eyre with Timothy Dalton starring Mr Edward Rochchester. He has a certain charm as well as sensibility and vulnerability that I truly loved more than any other adaption of this classic. And the actress who plays Jane Eyre is the absolute best one of them all. After you watch that version I encourage you to watch the 2011 version of Jane Eyre starring Michael Fassbender as Mr Edward Rochchester. This version is great too. But theb1980s remains my favorite out of all versions thanks to the actors who played Mr Rochchester and Hane Eyre so beautifully with such grace and it felt so realistic and authentic too me. It touched me more deeply. I also encourage you to watch the 1992 adaption to the movie Wuthering Heights based off another classic novel. A much young and heart breakingky sexy Ralph Fiennes (who played Lord Voldermort in Harry Potter) stars in this epic adaption to the classic novel. Here is a short synopsis of the movie but not the full synopsis so not too much is given away incase you've never read the novel before. Synopsis Young orphan Heathcliff (Ralph Fiennes) is adopted by the wealthy Earnshaw family and moves into their estate, Wuthering Heights. Soon, the new resident falls for his compassionate foster sister, Cathy (Juliette Binoche). The two share a remarkable bond that seems unbreakable... I'm a sucker for romance especially if it's historical romance or time travel romance like the TV show Outlander. And if you lobe sweet innocent pure love and romance, if you've never seen it before, I encourage you to watch all of the Love Comes Softly movies in order based on the books by Janette Oak. Love Comes Softly is the first movie and stars Katherine Heigl as Marty Claridge and Dal Midkiff as Clark Davis. It's without a doubt the best one and I do love the 2nd movie Loves Enduring Promise and the 5th movie Loves Unending Legacy and the 6th movie Loves Unfolding Dream the best. But I also enjoy the prequels when we see a much younger version of Clark Davis. You seem to be a woman after my own heart who loves romance and sweet pure love. So of course I had to mention the Love Saga to you. 🌟 The Love Comes Softly book series is a beloved collection of novels written by author Janette Oke. This book series tells the story of a pioneering family, the Davidsons, as they try to settle in the American West in the 1800s. Janette Oke’s writing style is warm, simple, and authentic, which has made her books popular among readers of all ages. The Love Comes Softly series has been made into several movies on the Hallmark Channel. The original movie with Katherine Heigl, Dale Midkiff, and January Jones has a large number of fans. About the series With more than a dozen books and films in the series, the public can follow the Davidson family through many generations. This gives readers a memorable reading experience full of heartwarming moments, characters they can relate to, and important life lessons. The Davidsons face many problems, but they also have many triumphs. The Love Comes Softly series examines themes like faith, love, family, and the challenges of living on the frontier. The Love Comes Softly series is a must-read and must-see for anyone who enjoys the Christian historical genre. Here is the list of the Love Saga movies and the order to watch them. 🌟 Series order The novel, written by Janette Oke, has been adapted into a movie series featuring talented actors such as Erin Cottrell, Logan Bartholomew, Patty Duke, and Wes Brown, and directed by Michael Landon Jr. Here is the recommended order for watching the Love Comes Softly film series: • Love Comes Softly (2003) • Love’s Enduring Promise (2004) • Love’s Long Journey (2005) • Love’s Abiding Joy (2006) • Love’s Unending Legacy (2007) • Love’s Unfolding Dream (2007) • Love Takes Wing (2009) • Love Finds a Home (2009) The series shows the hardships and victories of the pioneers who traveled west in covered wagons, as well as how important family, faith, and community were to them. The prequels and sequels to the original story follow the lives of their children and grandchildren as they continue to face challenges and learn valuable life lessons. The series also touches on themes such as the marriage of convenience, family and mother-in-law relationships, and the importance of forgiveness. Love Comes Softly (2003) Love Comes Softly is a charming and endearing film that tells the story of Marty, who heads west with her new husband Aaron, to start a new life. Tragedy strikes, and Marty is left to continue to fight for herself in a harsh and unforgiving land. Through her struggles, she learns the importance of family, faith, and love, After you watch all 8 of these movies according to the date they were all released, then watch the 3 movie prequels LOVE BEGINS, LOVES EVERLASTING COURAGE. And then watch Loves Christmas Journey. If you like good clean romance with no nudity and no cussing that includes honor, faith respect and principles that alot of us love about older historical romances, then you will love these series. It's still to this day my mother in laws favorite saga.

Thank you to whomever made this possible. I tried getting her a copy of this awhile back, but it was just too expensive for me with shipping and all. For me this is the best of the best giving time for character development and getting pulled into this great story. I hope you enjoy it just as much as many of us did when it came out. Still part of my bucket list...to get to "Pemberly". 😉

I already have - at least the outside of it. It's called Lyme Park and it's on the south side of Manchester near the Trafford Centre. If you're interested there's a video by Tudor Smith where he visits all the filming locations for the series.

I absolutely love Colin Firth's performance in this. It's incredible how he manages to communicate so much while acting so stiff and haughty. And I love Mr Darcy's character arc over the book/series. As an extreme introvert I can kind of relate to him. XD I also love how this series portrays the societal structures that were in place at this time, without modernizing it just to fit better with modern sensibilities. Oh, and the verbal sparring between Darcy and Elisabeth is SO delightful.

This is my absolute favorite adaptation of a Jane Austen novel. The acting, the scenery, the music, just everything. I actually just re-watched it last week ( for the millionth time!). Colin Firth and Jennifer Ehle, are magnificent together. Palpable chemistry. And the way he looks at her, wow. There is one scene later in the series that always gives me goosebumps in the way he just stares at her. I think in real life the two had a short relationship? But this is just amazing. And you're critique and analysis reflect someone who pays attention to what she is watching and who wants to be involved in the story. Some reactors just watch, make a few comments, and move on. But you really delve into the story and characters and give the movie/show its due. It's refreshing.

I so wish I could watch this series again for the first time! It's my all-time favourite. The 'beautiful street' (Meryton in the story) you mention in episode 2 is a real one, in a village called Lacock, which is very unspoiled and often used to shoot period dramas. Although I enjoyed the 2005 film, it was too 'Hollywood'. The subtle nuances and expressions were lost. Keira was just too, well, Keira.

Trying to watch the 2005 film reminded me of trying to watch Clerks; the dialogue is so fast it doesn't sound real, the actors just sound like they're starting each line the millisecond the other actor stops talking. It completely ruins the immersion for me, because real people need a split second to process what they just heard and react to it.

At this time "breeding" had a couple of implications. Most noblemen owned land and that was passed to the next generation. (The nobility acquired position & power by birth or by service to the crown.) Also, "breeding" meant inherited qualities of health (mental & physical) and even morals, honesty, stability and refinement in behavior. Much like breeding horses. But also, connections. The biggest calling card was the security in connections and it's implied validation, support or collateral. All this was to change with the industrial revolution. New inventions and machines meant a change in how wealth was created. It meant the "common man/commoner" could make his own way, future and fortune.

The fact that Miss Bingley is the one talking the most smack about people's breeding is hilarious, since her family made their fortune in trade, and therefore are of a lower class than the Bennets and the other landowners in the area. I especially like her and her sister laughing at Sir William Lucas for basically doing the exact thing their father did, except he actually got a title, which they(and Darcy) lacks.

This version is so much better than the Kiera Knightley version.... in the Kiera K version, even when Darcy comes to admire Lizzy, the actor comes across as a plank of wood.....in my opinion.

This is the best adaptation ever. So much of Jane Austen’s sparkling dialogue is present in the script (most of it is almost word for word) and the intricacies of Regency society are represented. It really brings the novel to life and all the characters are played so perfectly. I love it so much that I’ve rewatched it dozens of times over the years. I just found your channel but I’ll be subscribing to see the rest of this series.

How fun! Looking forward to watching the other episodes with you. About the Bennets' financial and social position-- Mr. Bennet is a landowning gentleman with a good annual income. The Bennets are basically upper middle class or lower upper-class. (They live well, and there are no pigs running through their house.) The problem for the Bennet women is that the Bennet parents have not saved any money for their dowries/futures, and they will lose their home and the income from the estate when their father dies. They will have to live off the interest of the 5,000 their mother brought into her marriage as her dowry, and then split it five ways when their mother eventually dies. If they get married now, Mr. Bennet can only afford to pay their husbands 50 a year, while he is alive. Compare this to the 20,000 each Bingley sister brings into her marriage. Even if not married, they will still be able to live very well off the interest. This is why the Bennet women are in such a precarious position. It would take a special man/men to accept brides who bring so little (financially) into the marriage.

The fact that Mrs Bennet's father managed to give her a 5000 pound dowry despite not being a landowner really shows the failings of Mr and Mrs Bennet...

My beautiful mother loved all of the classical English movies, such as Emma, Sense and Sensibility, Pride and Prejudice etc. She would watch them with me when I was very young. They have been my comfort movies and they will be for the rest of my life. They remind me of my mom and at the end of these movies I can’t help but shed a tear. It warms my heart to see you enjoy them and dig deep into the emotions and masterful commentary within the script of this movie. Thank you for giving me a bit of peace and joy during this series. As well as the chance to relive my tender and loving memories associated with this film.

I love that you see all the complexities and how it explains the story better. Both versions are fabulous in their own way. I also love that you find humour in it. Jane Austen was such a clever writer, I love all her characters, especially the ridiculous ones.
